After 7.6 decades of life I can STILL SAY, Kate Smith is/was my favorite singer EVER. I miss her kindness, love, patriotism and all she stood for which was our country, every person, race & creed long ago. Did you all know that she single-handedly raised more money for the WWII war bonds than any other, male or female star. A great woman, a great AMERICAN.

Well said!!! I agree with all you wrote about Kate. And she and Ted Collins visited all the military bases in the U.S. and Canada during WWII. They took their radio show to entertain the troops who were soon leaving for the war zones. Often, Ted and Kate paid the expenses of their performers who traveled with them. Over 250,000,000 miles traveled often by train. Richard K. Hayes wrote a great bio about Kate. And she wrote two autobiographies: Living In A Great Big Way, 1938; Upon My Lips a Song, 1960.

You and I are much in the same boat and age wise as well. You know I was thinking about the 4th in 2 days. I always love to bring Kate Smith in for "God Bless America". You know, right now I am so glad she isn't in this damn mess our country is in. It makes me sick when I think how stupid people really are. Damn, if people would have woke up in 2016 Trump would never have been elected. I'm so glad Kate doesn't have to live in this shitty turmoil we are experiencing.

Same here! I am 77 and I grew up loving Kate Smith. When we got our first TV in 1950 she was the only show on. She was on for 15 minutes a day and that was all the TV we had. And back in the mid-1980s I had the pleasure of meeting Dean Martin. We chatted and he kiss my cheek. What a handsome and charming man. Here they are together singing. I’ve loved them both my entire life.

My father would sing this to my mother both of them are in heaven now . Nothing kept them apart not even death. Two weeks apart they passed and for one reason or another mom couldn't get cremated ...dad's body got there to the mortuary and then they were cremated...

Can there ever be anything more charming than this duet! Watched it so many times. On the same show, Kate sang and danced just before she sang with Dean. The audience is heard in the beginning of this clip showing their appreciation of Kate's song and dance. As Kate began her dance with the chorus, the audience erupted with applause and whistles which she nodded and said "Thank you" as she danced. Such a charming and gracious woman! One of a kind!

I've always loved Kate Smith. I used to watch her tv show when I was a kid. On every show she sang " When the Moon Comes Over the Mountain." That was my favorite.

I've always loved this song ever since I was a kid 75 years ago. I can still picture my mother and father dancing to it and at times my father playing it on his harmonica.

I don’t care what was said about Kate Smith I still enjoy her singing ! I don’t think she was racist

A seemingly odd coupling turned out beautifully. Dean and Kate were excellent together and she was a guest on his show a number of times and each time their duets were a big hit. Greg Garrison, Dean’s producer had directed Kate’s tv show years earlier and made it happen.

I've never heard of her unfortunately. As I was listening to her sing this song I thought to myself what a beautiful voice she has. I shall now look her up and try to hear other songs of hers.

When I was in jr. high, our class took a trip to Meramec Caverns, in Missouri. I'll always remember the underground lighted flag display. A recording of "God Bless America" by Kate Smith was played, for visitors.

I remember on one occasion on the show, he came out in a business suit, and looked terrific, a nice change. His designer of choice was Sy DeVore in Beverly Hills. Would have been nice to see him in more suits, sweaters, slacks, but he resisted change.

I just love that tune but I'm also 67 now, when I was young it was Disco and stuff like that, this type of music we hear here, was for my parents' generation but I have to say now many years after, it was very good melodies they had, this one especially has a strong melody line

That was so very lovely.

Kate was a really fine dancer, especially in her earlier days. Few know that, but she is quite adept and fluid, I suppose used to be much more than later, like with Dean here.

One of the rare times that you do not see Dean in his signature tux; due to him filming in western movie which is why he's wearing the same attire to promote the film.

Her last record she made with Atlantic Records with Dr. John as pianist and praised him highly, along with Roberta Flack, and Joel Durn, producer. Widen your outlook. Many African American performers got a start on her radio and tv shows. She sang at Nat King Cole's memorial.
