The 1958 nominations were for 1957 films and "All the Way" won. Songs were so much more musical then, before the beat took over.

I so much wish I could argue with you that you are wrong, but I’m afraid that with the advent of computers it’s sadly true that no-one has to even be able to sing in tune anymore, or carry a melody because their ‘talent’ (or lack of it) can be fixed with the click of a mouse. On the other hand, without You tube we would be denied these glimpses into the true talent of the long-gone Golden Age of real music. So I do have rather mixed feelings about modern technology... I would also like to give credit to the wonderful songwriters of that time, who wrote such beautiful lyrics in what was often a second language for them, as so many were immigrants whose families had gone to America to escape religious or political persecution in their own countries.

What a GEM!! This is fantastic, love seeing Danny Thomas, not as many clips of him around. Sinatra was definitely "the Voice". However, Dean Martin is my first crush; Dean had a way of making it seem so easy and smooth, Mir. Cool. Love Danny Thomas and Dean Martin singing "Tammy" ... this song holds a special place in my heart. ❤❤💓

(guest) I remember these songs from when I was a little kid... they have such strong melodies : gorgeous. These were popular songs.....but imho, the general standards started dropping after that time... gradually descending into banality : forgettable , weak efforts, always with the annoying, predictable " beat"..... It's so nice still to be able to see the skill of Dean, Frank, & co., to remind us of real music ... Many thanks to You Tube , etc., for keeping these gems available for us to savour, in the presence of such a !ot of modern cr*p !. 😊🎼🇬🇧😊🎹🎼😊💙🌹🇬🇧🎼

On his tv sitcom Make Room for Daddy, he played a nightclub entertainer who sang and told jokes. His "schnozz" ample nose, as with some other singers like Barbra Streisand, seems to have added sonority, been a singer asset. And any singer who well emotes a song goes far to put it over, whatever their voice quality.

@@akrenwinkle Hmm, actually a good example of how the acoustics of that large "calabash" nasal chamber (like a good bass horn or woodwind instrument) did justice to his tagline "Good Night, Missus Calabash ... wherever you are!" P.S. re the sonority of other Italian male singers like Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Mario Lanza, Bobby Darin, Bobby Rydell and more. An orchestra, and our musical soundscape, is enriched by a diapaison of different sounds, solo and/or interacting with harmony (or studied dissonance).

@@JudgeJulieLit For one thing, Dean had a nose job, removing a big chunk of his awning. His success came afterward. Sorry, not sorry... you're a real pedant, unless you're kidding around.

Did Frank ever record "An Affair to Remember"? I know Vic Damone had a hit with it, but Sinatra should have made a record if he didn't. Danny Thomas sounded nice on "Sayonara," too. Interestingly, Dean Martin sang "Three Coins in the Fountain" at the Oscars in 1955, but I'm not certain if he also sang "All the Way" at the '58 ceremony or Sinatra did it.

Also, I always thought Danny Thomas was underrated as a singer. He certainly wasn't as great as Frank (who was?!) or Dean, for that matter -- but he was pretty darn good, and was never recognized as such. (In fact, I doubt few today would remember him but for the St. Jude Children's Hospital -- which, of course, is perhaps more important than any showbiz accomplishment . . . .)
