Dealing with Pain in Sitting Meditation
Learn how to sit comfortably for meditation. Some of you have asked, so here's a link to the cushions I use in the video.

I skipped this video so many times because of the title, but this was such a big mistake. Really thank you!

It's great you mentioned the meditation-yoga link here, many modern sources seem unaware of the link, that yoga wasn't yoga for it's own sake, but to support meditation
Thanks for this brill video, Neil. You're a natural teacher. Much appreciated! Take care.

Thanks so much Nancy! I’m planning an updated version of this. A four part video, about 5 min per part, called Sitting Meditation Startup Kit. Part 1 is Intro and Stretching, Part 2 is The Postures, Part 3 is What to Do When it Hurts, and Part 4 is a Guided Meditation that ends silently, to tell you try it all out. What do you think about this plan?
Very helpful, Neal. Thanks a lot!
You’re so knowledgeable there’s a lot I don’t know
I happened to found your video and my I'm soo thankful . Big applause to you as I learned a lot from proper stretching first to doing it gradually ......again thank you so much

Neil, thank you so much!! It’s an extremely well-structured and helpful video! I recently began doing sitting meditations regularly and struggled with back pain. Now I realize that it's due to the lack of flexibility and equipment, and I have a clear improvement plan. Thanks again!

Excelent video, thank you so much.
Thanks dude very good video, was having a serious problem with joint pressure this should help loosen me up a bit.
Thank you for taking the time to make this informative video, I am new at meditation and I don't meditate often because it is unconformable to sit with you legs crossed since I don't have the flexibility, which I will need to work on.
good notes and tips for folks
Thank you very much big bro. Highly informative.
You are right on with those stretches... i can barely lean forward at all in both but i have been doing them every other day for a couple weeks and i am sitting through about 20 minutes without any pain in my knees or feet.... thank you. Before i could barely make 10 minutes without having to stop or disturb my meditation to stretch out my legs.

Candice Sirju thats great to hear, thank you for that feedback! When you feel ready, try to doing two rounds of those stretches instead of one. Do one stretch, then the other, then the first again, then the second again. Nice and easy. It will help your progress. But only if you like it! If you push too much you might just stop and that’s the worse thing. Best wishes to you!

This is very helpful. Thank you. :)
Good solid thoughtful suggestions. Important to say It's not a one-way street of improvement: I've been sitting zazen 40 minutes a day for 35 years, sitting very comfortably in full lotus the last 8 or so (before that it had been half-lotus). When I finally realized I could switch to full, it was a wonderful feeling and is definitely my favorite pose. BUT, because of COVID I started climbing stairs inside my apartment, and apparently overdid it, sometimes doing 2 at a time, and maybe pulled a muscle behind my knee. Also, some days I sat twice, because of stress. My left knee and hip started aching unbearably. Encouraged by this video, I will start sitting in a chair with a cushion to get the right down angle until it (hopefullY) recovers. Plus, the stretching suggested is better than what I was doing, as I was going to the pain point while he stops beofe that. So we'll see....

Thanks Neal. This video is awesome. I want to perfect the Burmese posture but my thighs don't flatten on the ground.
@NealGolub
3 жыл бұрын
You're welcome Chai! Heres a couple of suggestions for you. First, if you make the small cushion you are sitting on a bit taller, your knees and thighs will naturally get closer to the floor. Second, over time you will get more flexible so your knees and thighs will get closer to the floor on their own as that happens. But in the meantime you can make your current posture more comfortable by rolling up towels and putting one under each knee, for support. Then, over time make the rolled towels smaller and smaller until you don't need them at all!
thank u
