His is so awesome. I see how hard it is for deafness to be able to read lips. That’s why I think everyone should have a basic knowledge of ASL.

This was so cute Omg I learned a tiny bit of ASL to teach my daughter as a newborn & this makes me want to learn more

Without my hearing aids, I’m almost completely deaf, seeing this reminds me of how often I’m struggling to read lips, but also all of the funny things I THINK are being said

@@jefffetterhoff2750 Not sure how that would work. A lot of colleges offer ASL classes, if that doesn't work for you google Bill Vicars and Lifeprint.com

I enjoyed watching you guys laugh and have fun doing it. I don't think I'd be very good at lip reading 😂. I was impressed by how much y'all got correct.

Wow! Scarlet is so fast with her hands! And, Chrissy, you were (for me) easier to lip read than I find most people. Without signing or verbalizing, if you looked at the camera and mouthed words it would be an interesting test for viewers to see if they can read your lips.

Wow, you guys are amazing! You've got superpowers! I'm interested in linguistics of sign languages and ASL in particular, and I have some burning questions. I can hear, and everything I know about ASL comes from Wikipedia, so sorry if they're stupid. How does ASL do backchanneling and turn-taking? Is talking over somebody frequent? How is a large group discussion organized? Do you have to constantly rotate to see everybody talking? I've noticed many signers subvocalize... is that what it's called?.. some words in English, while signing. Why do you do that? Also, how do you speak ASL and English at the same time? It seems to me akin to trying to speak English while writing in French, no? They appear to have completely different morphology, grammar, and even word order. If that is right, then you're even more impressive! How do you do tenses and aspects? Is there a separate sign that says "this happened in the past" or does the verb inflect somehow, like, is signed in a slightly different location, or the hand moves slightly differently?

Deaf people tend to be good at actually waiting to take turns in a conversation although, of course, sometimes talking over others happens. And mouth morphemes, which is the next thing your talking about is used to help clarify certain things, as some signs have multiple meanings, and is part of the grammar. Yes, the grammar is very different. And tenses are used in a particular way. Here are some examples(note that like you can say the same thing in many different ways in English, the same is true with ASL). Basic ASL grammar is time + topic + comment + negation/question marker A bit more complicated than that, but that’s the general principle. Rhetorical questions are frequent. English: I need to go to New York next week for a business meeting. ASL: next week New York I need go why? business meeting. English: I didn’t go to the party last Saturday because I really wasn’t feeling well. ASL: past Saturday party I go *head shake* not why? Really-sick (alternatively: past Saturday I party go*shake head in the negative* why? really-sick) The really-sick is just the sign of sick with the appropriate sign showing emphasis. English: I’m going to the store. ASL: Store I go. (Alternatively: I go store) English: I’ll go to the store tomorrow. ASL: tomorrow store I go will. (Alternatively: tomorrow I go store will.) English: I can’t go today. ASL: today I go can’t. English: What’s your name? ASL: Your name what? English: I’m Deaf. ASL: I Deaf I. English: I’m Hearing. ASL: I hearing I. English: What is your sister’s name? ASL: Your sister name what? English: My sister’s name is Jaymie. ASL: My sister name what? J+A+Y+M+I+E. When signing and talking at the same time or using Sim-Com (simultaneous communication) either the English or ASL tend to really suffer grammar wise because the grammar is different. If I made a mistake in explaining, I’d love for someone else to chime in! I don’t always explain things well.

I've been learning ASL on and off for the last two months (started after I left that comment) and the Topic-Comment structure is firmly stuck in my brain now. I haven't encountered rethorical question structures yet, so thank you for that. I learned mouth morphemes are a thing literally yesterday and still have no idea how they work. Also, am I right in assuming that verbal aspect is, I guess, affixed would be the right word, onto the sign? So doing something repeatedly would just be signed as the sign moved several times back and forth?

Question: Does the cochlear implant actually "fix" your hearing, or does it give you some hearing ability? Sorry for my ignorance on this. I don't know how it works and remember it being mentioned on a Switched at Birth episode and there being some debate over it making the character a "real" deaf person if he got it. So, just asking for your thoughts on this. But, I'm wanting to learn ASL and your channel serves as an inspiration to me! Thanks for giving me some much-needed advice!

Just learn it!! It’s beautiful! Start with bill vicars!! Avoid random channels with not experienced hearing ppl teaching often times this leads to learning the wrong signs!! Trust me please I just went through relearning a lot of words!! From when I first began learning!

This channel includes someone’s perspective with a cochlear implant definitely awesome but make sure to check out some channels with all perspectives and make sure to learn/and watch videos about the history and culture!! Check out your towns ASL/Sign Language (locational) community classes! You want to appreciate the language right lol not reduce it to OUR sterotypes something I’m learning as someone who is losing their hearing and gaining a community and a language! Don’t be shy good luck

it does not fix our hearing it just helps us to hear i have a chochlear implant since i was 3 years old now im 18.yrs old. and im very used to it i can hear very well ive been learning alot also thanks for my mother i learned how to talk and im used to talk so yeah. remeber deaf people are difernet some of them cant hear very well some of them cant talk so they have a diferent experience, i have a friend who is deaf exatly like im and she also have a chochlear implant she can hear well but she have also a problem with voice so her voice are not clearly and she can talk a little bit. deafnes have a diferent levels 1 to 5 level. i have a 5 level this means im deaf 100% and i dont hear anything. :) hope it helps you! sorry my bad english this is my third language.

I know you haven't had it for long, but will it improve as you become used to hearing yourself speak, or will you always sound the way you do. I’m a hearing person so this is how I understand it, deaf people please obviously correct me or add info if I’m wrong. The cochlear implant does not necessarily give them a complete range of hearing. In Chrissy’s case she already has a compromised cochlear nerve genetically so she will never have a full range of hearing even with the cochlear implant. I believe Scarlet gets a bit more complete information from her implant. The cochlear implant relies on a microphone to digitize the sounds so there are always pitfalls and clarity issues (think of using your phone to record everything, and how many things could interfere with that). How much their English sounds like a hearing person’s English also depends on whether they were hearing when they first learned English and/or how quickly they lost the hearing. Deaf people who were hearing as children have no issue speaking English clearly even though they can’t hear themselves, they’ve already developed the skills to speak all the English phonemes so they can still produce them even though they cannot hear them clearly anymore. People who have had partial hearing most of their lives will have trouble with certain sounds, for example Chrissy often drops s sounds because s is not very audible through a hearing aid.

I got drunk and randomly stumbled across this girl. And I’m sorry but it’s kinda sad and depressing to see her transition to a super sweet young woman who is just herself and comfortable in her own skin with her own style she’s comfortable with, to someone who is obviously styling her hair and outfits and nails to try to keep up with every other hairbrain girl on the internet.
