World's Most Dangerous Roads: Deadliest Journeys in Haiti in 2015
Deadliest Roads - Congo Katanga: • Deadliest Roads | Cong...
Haiti is the poorest country in the Caribbean. 5 years after the earthquake which hit Port-au-Prince and the surrounding areas, the effects of the catastrophe are still being felt. To cross the country, there are only dirt tracks to transport people and their goods. Travelling the 80km that separates Gonaïves and Môle Saint Nicolas in the North-east takes up to ten hours. There is one bus which makes the journey, and it is far from a comfortable ride.

10 things you should know about Haiti 🇭🇹 10. The anchor of Christopher Columbus's largest ship, the Santa Maria is on permanent exhibit at the Musée du Panthéon National Haitien (MUPANAH), in Haiti’s capital, Port-au-prince. 9. Haiti is the only state in history that had a successful slave uprising. It threw off the shackles of slavery in 1804. On January 1, 1804, Haiti was the first independent nation of Latin America and the Caribbean, to abolish slavery. 8. A long history of oppression by dictators such as that megalomaniac Duvalier aka Baby Doc and his son bled the nation dry. Since the end of the Duvalier era, Haiti has been transitioning to a democratic system. Natural Disasters like hurricanes and the 2010 earthquake are making it hard. But Haitians persevere. They don’t give up. 7. Haitians have a voodoo thing going. They believe in zombies and a folkloric creature called lougarou, described as a blood sucking hag. Disguises itself as a hag and can change into a fireball. Sounds pretty cool to me as long as she/it leaves me alone. 6. Since the 18th century (amazing) there has been a sustained effort to write in Haitian Creole. The recognition of Creole as an official language has led to an expansion of novels, poems, and plays in Creole. 5. Haiti has always been a literary nation that has produced poetry, novels, and plays of international recognition. 4. The two official languages of Haiti are French and Haitian Creole. 3. Here’s where we come in: Tap Tap buses are colorfully painted buses or pick-up trucks that serve as share taxis. The "tap tap" name comes from the sound of passengers tapping on the metal bus body to indicate they want off. These vehicles for hire are often privately owned and extensively decorated. They follow fixed routes, do not leave until filled with passengers, and riders can usually disembark at any point. The decorations are a typically Haitian form of art. Mileage these bus motors get: no less than 1 million but the goal is to squeeze 2 million out of them. Now if that isn’t efficient, I don’t know what is. 2. The tourism market in Haiti is undeveloped and the government is trying to remedy the situation by investing heavily. Haiti has many of the features that attract tourists to other Caribbean destinations; pristine white beaches, mountainous scenery and a year-round warm climate, however the country's poor image overseas, at times exaggerated, has hampered the development. 1. Haiti is worth a visit and wants and needs tourist to come. It gets a bad rap from the media. Potential travelers should stop by. They have nice hotels and gorgeous beaches and cultures and art and music. Island of the damned be damned > their love for life is infectious. Put it on your list. Post pandemic obviously unless you own a plane and/or yacht ⛵️ then you can head out now. Enjoy your stay-cation to Haiti 🇭🇹 Available worldwide

The Haitian people are resilient, kind and extremely smart. I can personally attest to the hard work they do. I live in Canada but for the last 9 years have been the Canadian director in partnership with JAKDESA COMMUNITY SCHOOL in Cayes Jacmel, South of Jacmel. My thump print picture shows the first section of the school. We now have 12 classrooms, a kitchen building with a radio station on the second floor that broadcasts up into the mountains. I am blessed to work with 34 teachers, all Haitians, and support staff. I am so proud of Haiti and if you get a chance to visit please do. There are lots of beautiful sites and hotels along the Caribbean Sea that will capture your heart. ❤️🙏

My comments keep getting deleted because even though they are factually correct they are not politically correct I guess. I'll try again. The average lQ (yes, I spelled it that way on purpose as to sneak past the algorithm) in Haiti is 67. This does not make them bad people, but I think that is the main thing that has been holding them back since their independence 200 years ago.

  • @sharonleis1365

@Jay J one of the things about IQ averages is they do not tell is the stories of the people. In a country where mis-government and money constantly stolen from the people makes it is very difficult to get good food into the mouths of children in particular. The first job I took on when funding the school was to provide nourishing meals every day. A young mind can not develop with out proper nutrition. To help with this we have provided seeds for personal family gardens. One problem I witness first hand is NGO's going in and putting bandages in the wound to make donor's feel like something is being done. The first responsibility was to work with the local Board of Directors to find out what the biggest needs were. #1 nutrition, #2 education, #3 trade school for young adults that had to drop out of school after grade 6 because their parents didn't have the money to pay tuition. I could continue but if you have read this far you might be interested in what is really going on in Haiti.

@Jay J thank you for your note. Most people see the poor as it being their fault rather than the fact of being born in a certain place as being disadvantaged. THEY do not see themselves as victims but hard working and willing to do what it takes to improve their lives. I do not.hand out money. Everyone must plant gardens and trees for reforestation. Hand up not hand out. 😁

The sad part after seying so many documentaries about places like this is that they sabotage themselves. They don't think about the future which is a huge mistake and they use wrongly the help from other nations. They had reforestation projects but like someone said before they break in and cut the trees. Without realising they only harm their own future. Everyone is for himself and that's the problem.

Reading through the comment’s I was more excited to type, seeing how much we’ve grown and realize how much nothing has changed since we we’re babies. Now I’m urging some of us who deeply cares and want nothing but better for future generations of the babies of our children’s kids . Forward for Ayiti

I admire the Haitians for their determination to deal with the lack of so many things we Americans take for granted. Be it so, they are FREE, and I have faith their lives will get better with good government leadership. Furthermore, the contrast between Haiti and the Dominican Republic reflects the leadership of each country. I will not complain about my situation here in the U.S.

Although I do try to be as truthful and as none bias as possible, I must admit that the contrast between the DR and Haiti is one sided. The racism, colorism, the abuse, and the violence is one sided. Haiti has been trying to reach out and make peace for the longest but many Dominican have this deep seeded hatred for Haitians and for dark skinned people in general.

The northern part of Haiti has always been the most neglected. It looks like a desert. The Southern part of Haiti is a paradise. It is very clean with a lot of trees and all the roads are paved. The current President of Haiti, Jovenel Moise, is from the northern part of Haiti, in the city of Port de Paix. You would think that he would build new roads leading to his hometown.

@@manlikeryan just like African leaders do to their people..just like arab kings do to their people..just like most black celebrities do to their own hood...and many others i can't name. If they're straight, they can careless about someone else's daily struggles, they have the luxury of doing whatever they want.. We take from our own and export money out of our community. Too bad powerful people don't really care about the ones struggling..they care about maintaining the luxury things & the lifestyle. The first shall be last. Haiti has been blackballed. Predominately by the French, Dutch, Spanish, Europeans, Spanish and America. Why would you help a black nation that broke free from slavery by violating your ppl to the worst degree?! They are severely oppressed but has the ability to be a mega Caribbean hotspot. Former leaders has cost this country everything. Their currency is barely worth anything. It's true sad what the people are going through. But the are strong and intelligent to be able to live in this condition. Americans will never be able to survive a year there.
