During the off-season many crab boats because of the size of their holds, serve as "fleet tenders" to other fisheries. A busy boat MAKES money... A dockside boat costs money. And it's as easy as that.

Fleet tenders were actually "British merchant ships fitted with a wooden superstructure to resemble battleships or aircraft carriers during the Second World War." The purpose was to fool german recon planes. A _ship's_ tender is what you're referring to.

I remember during one of the early seasons like 1/2 they did a lot of “how things work” type episodes explaining salmon activities, processing boats and canneries. Lots of good info during that time of the show, wish I could be more specific which episodes they were

To me it looks like the TB is being used as an offload vessel as it has bigger holds..whatever those smaller boats are catching. The TB is holding it for them is my guess

@@zaynes5094 I agree. That would be a cool show. Deadliest catch did a special episode on the wizard and keep had his daughter up there for Salmon tendering season. It shows a few clips of how the process works, discovery also had a show years ago called Bristol Bay brawl that showed part of the catching and tendering process.

Lol it’s just tendering during the summer salmon season. I’ve worked on drift net boats and and a couple from deadliest catch are out there. I’ve also worked on seining boats near pws where the northwestern and the other half of the fleet tenders. We can order groceries, get gas, sometimes if you get there just at the right time they’ll let you shower onboard too 😂. They unload out catch at the end of the day and take it to processing so we don’t have to go back to port every night

They're using it to load the tanks with salmon it's called a tender they weigh the fish coming off each boat they put it into the hole on ice and they get paid by by the pound

There's also a herring fishery which is also a big moneymaker!!! He is on that show bloodlines in Hawaii . With Josh and Casy they have the Cornelia Marie what a life they live! They put there lives on the line! All winter and now they're learning the fishery it's amazing

Wizard does the same thing off season since they are bigger then the cod boats 9r haddock boat ect. The small boat use his boat to unload there fish on so they can keep fishing and don't have to go to Port to off load the catch

Not processing, just accepting small boats catch since it can hold huge amounts compared to the small boats. They record the weight of fish transfered from each vessel so that later when they off load at the cannery or processing ship the individual boats get paid what they are owed. Its a good deal for salmon fisherman who would have to burn a bunch of fuel running back and forth to offload... instead they can make a short trip saving fuel and getting back to fishing faster.

The small boats are called Gillnetters. They fish for salmon in Bristol Bay, AK. When they load their boats, they go over to the Tender, in this case, it's the Time Bandit. The tender sucks the salmon out through a big vacuum type deal and they pump into the tank. When the Tender is full, it goes off to the cannery and unloads.
