Deadbolt - Story Summary

Ойындар

The story of Deadbolt follows a Reaper as they are sent on missions by their mysterious boss, the Flames, to kill various Undead Creatures in the world they live in. At first glance, that story seems rather straightforward; however, there is some hidden lore in the game that hints at something deeper. When all the pieces are put together, the story of Deadbolt gains a depth that elevates it to another level, making for a compelling narrative. This video uncovers all those secrets, and puts them all together so that the hidden story of Deadbolt can be seen in full! Hope you enjoy

    You forgot to mention that Ibzan makes fun of your inferior skills. Out of every opponent, his reaction time and accuracy is by far the best. Only the ability to rewind time and teleport give you the advantage.

    The thing is- Flames learned to late about compassion towards their Reaper. If Flames decided to interact or to do some compassionate move toward Izban then the whole undead plot wouldn't be a problem. Flames changed too late, breaking a friendship and then dealing with a reaper who didn't care about the things it gave to them. Think about it- reaper you play as never cares about what Flames give them, their only dialogue is "Another night"- line at the begining of the game. Your, our, reper, the player character doesn't care about compassion or friendship with Flames- they care about doing the job. The reaper job is all they want, not fancy furniture or a cat. These are things Izban would want and be happy that his friend cared about him.

    I like to take it a step further and say that the Flames failing Ibzan is just an indication that even Gods (as the Flames are meant to be the God of Life) aren't infallible and capable of mistakes. In a way, they're human, just like we are. Whether that's a dialogue on some facet of society or just humanity itself is up to you, but I think it's fascinating. Thanks for watching!

    To be fair the Reaper {does} have other dialog but it still falls in line with your idea of professionalism. They only ever make short remarks about their work. This reaper may just be another step for the Flames to reach true compassion because they only treat the reaper with material possessions rather than letting the reaper be roommates with a candle or even another reaper (if multiple reapers are able to coexist). The Flames themselves could even make the boss-employee relationship more of a student-mentor relationship. After all, anything is better than a reaper who only ever interacts with Charon. (Fun fact: The reaper's voice uses the same sound as swinging your fists) {}=Edit

    Man, Ibzan had it rough. Forced to live a torturous life, died of suicide, then was forced to live a yet more torturous life, until he was killed in his last desperate attempt to get back the slightly less miserable life he once had. Overall a very unique and interesting story tho, I especially found it fascinating from a worldbuilding perspective, and all of the unique origins and behaviours of the undead types.

    And why is sucide punishable by an enternity in hell? They didnt do anything wrong. And what about zombies? They just over dosed they didnt do anything wrong either. Im not really sure how vampires are created, are they betraying their lover or is it the other way around but none of them seem to deserve the eternal torture each of them suffer. And why are there no actually bad people in hell? Like maybe the zombies might be bad because crimes and drugs correlate, but you can overdose while being a perfect human being otherwise and you would still become a zombie. They dont have hell for murderers, or gang members or really anyone who deserves it but theydo for a people who really dont deserve it.

    Ibzan lived a torturous life, driving him to kill himself, prompting him to be a skeleton in the Place after death. Soon enough, he was chosen to become a reaper, forced to live another torturously boring life, driving him to give up again and kill himself again. To his dismay, he would just be reborn as a skeleton again, ached by a torturous cold, driving him to, yet again, kill himself (he definitely tried it.) He realized that maybe the only way he could feel warmth again was to try and become a reaper again, so he tried talking to the flames, who promptly just ignored who was in their eyes, a traitor. Ibzan saw that his only way to try to apologize to the flames was to somehow find a way to the headquarters himself. He then wasted an eternity learning magic, climbing the Dredged ladder, becoming their leader, making connections with the other gangs and somehow convincing them to sacrifice their grunts so that a portal to the flames could be built, just to, in the end, be promptly ignored again and left dismantled by a better version of himself. yeah, pretty rough

    Ah, the tragedy of Ibzan. Always stuck with me because of how much of a shitty situation it is. You're stuck for an unknown amount of time doing disposal grunt work for an employer that only interacts with you when needed, your biggest splurge is a mattress you can't even use since you have no eyes or indeed lids to close, and it's unclear if you'll stay that way for eternity. And when you attempt to create your own way out, you're punished with the loss of the only one thing separating you from those you were sent to remove, something as basic as warmth. All without answers, no reasons for why. And despite that you orchestrate a master plan to pierce the veil and seige the next realm, all for just a chance to say sorry to a 'friend' who couldn't give you the time of day. And you didn't even succeed in getting your word. Being killed was arguably the nicest thing that's ever been done for you in lord only knows how long, simply because you're free now. (Operating off the assumption the hard mode tape IS Ibzan's, with a few educated inferences)

The story is great, but I think the ending we have is a good spot for it to end, the Flames learned to be more compassionate, Izban finally got some peace and the Reaper we played as got released from his duity as thanks for his hard work. I think it'd be cool if the next game focused more on the society of The Place than the reaper and flames. It's importand to make sure a story doesn't overstay it's welcome to the point where things no longer make sence or is overly complecated.

    The way I interpreted it... it means that the Flames isn't just snuffing a light candle or ending a transmission, the Reaper is literally being turned off, as in their service along as well as their stay in the 'Place' is powering off, either leaving existance or (in a more hopeful note) going to heaven... (yes even after all the killing, since he was doing a will of nature).

  • @SquatchGamingChannel

    @SquatchGamingChannel

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yeah, I have no idea either. My initial thought is that the light switch sound was just the simplest way to indicate the light going off. There's not really a sound of a candle or fire being snuffed out in the game (that I can remember), but even if there was, there's not the sound of flames burning when the Reaper is sitting in the chair, so it could feel out of place. However, Hopoo could have just as easily used the sound they use for the incrementing stars in Mission Clear screen as that's kind of close to a snuffing sound, so that kind of disproves my thought. I couldn't say, honestly! What do you think?

  • @TWNTWO-ZIP_realIbip

    @TWNTWO-ZIP_realIbip

    {}=Edit[ @@SquatchGamingChannel It doesn't seem too much of a stretch for the Flames to use "wFireball" to extinguish because the chandeliers inside the home (not to be confused with the reaper's home) do use that sound when extinguished. I feel as if a light switch sound being used in the one level without light switches is a deliberate choice especially because the Flames does use the "wFireball" sound when saying text coloured blue and the fact that the sound of a lighter would make more sense because the candles use "wLighter" as their talking sound {additionally this would make sense for @Renato Mantovani 's interpretation because a lighter is used to symbolise Ibzan leaving the role of reaper}, but yet wasn't chosen. However I have no idea what this would imply. Maybe it's something to do with the skeleton corpses found just before the house or even those floating black cubes in the background.

    Great video, this really helps me understand and appreciate the story of this game a lot better. However, I don’t think that the Dredged actually told Roland to “keep throwing his men away to the reaper”, rather Roland was parodying/paraphrasing what they said, since having them guard the ash resulted in their deaths, which frustrated Roland and made him feel like he was sending his men on suicide missions

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@SquatchGamingChannel Glad to hear! Just got finished with the video now - it's a great summary of all the plot points. One of the greatest themes in this game is irony - zombies chasing ash after overdosing caused them to be that way in the first place, Madam Stela wanting to feel the sun on her skin (as a vampire), skeletons being the only units that can be revived when they crave death the most. The difference in how the two reapers are treated is particular tragic - Ibzan needed companionship, calling the Flames his friend and growing tired of the endless grind of missions (assuming the reaper featured in the secret tape is him - I think so, since he hopes that his "friend" is there today and it mentions buying the bed we see in his apartment). The protagonist Reaper, on the other hand, is much more of a stoic professional, only ever referring to the Flames as their Employer. It makes me wonder if Ibzan started that way too, before the endless monotony drove him to form an attachment to the only other figure in his life. Fun fact about the game's development - before the concept of the Dredged came about, originally reapers were the ones who formed via suicide, and each of the gangs were to be lead by a former reaper. Timur's icon originally belonged to a reaper who committed suicide via shotgun, hence the blown-open skull. It was changed because having reapers control everything made the undead feel less important, but Ibzan's the remnant of that idea - half skeleton, half reaper. If you look carefully at the sprite of the Reaper as he goes through the apartment door to the docks, you can see a hole in the back of his head, which is also a remnant of that concept. Since we don't currently know how reapers form (I'm assuming they're chosen in some way), this could be seen as either just a detail that Hopoo forgot about, or a hint towards what happened in the Reaper's original life, before he was chosen. A couple fun little tidbits not addressed in-game: Hellhounds are formed when animals die of abuse, and the Dredged are named as such because unlike other undead, who wash up at the shore of the river, skeletons form at the bottom of it and have to make their own way back to the shore. Also, just a heads up since you're planning on going for achievements - for Conquest, you need to get all achievements in the same save file, rather than just unlocking them all once. This means you need to get Death (no deaths) and Famine (under an hour) in the same run. After that, you can reload it and go for the rest of the achievements just fine, so I advise focusing entirely on those two until you get them.

    Yeah, I like how the game plays with contrast and novel ideas. It goes a long way towards making it unique. I remember the first time I heard about Skeletons being cold, I thought it was such a genius way to represent them, and now I think about that everytime I think about skeletons. Lol. I haven't heard those tidbits! Those are really cool! I think I agree with the decision to not have the gangs led by former Reapers. Really made the factions come alive to have them be led by one of their own. Would have loved to see some other Reapers though, or at least other references to them! Wow, beat the game in under an hour without dying? Maybe I won't be able to get em... Lol. I've only got so much time in the day. Thanks for sharing all of that, btw! As simple as deadbolt seems compared to risk of rain, i seriously loved it far more i think, i love christodolou’s work on the soundtracks, i love the pizel art style… I think there’s something real pure about the hoppoos games.

    Nice video! I love deadbolt so much, one of my favorite games. I had no idea the reaper was actually unconsciously helping the dredged by making the zombies and vampires... corpses. I also did not quite understand what Ibzan wanted to do, exactly. Maybe im just not great at coming up with my own conclusions, hell, i even thought that the friend in the secret log was the reaper we play as, at one point. The story is way more complex than i thought, and i dont know why i am surprised. Both ror games also have a fair bit of lore whose complexity becomes apparent only after you have connected all the pieces (the logs). I have been thinking about how cool a deadbolt prequel would be, covering Ibzans life (?), but yknow, the story seems pretty much complete to me so im content with whatever weve got.

    also if skeletons are doomed to be in the place forever unlike the other undead which have their souls carryed across the river styx then shouldn't ibzan be reconstructed?

  • @SquatchGamingChannel

    @SquatchGamingChannel

    2 жыл бұрын

    I was hoping no one would point it out. Lol. Yeah, I can't really fully fit the Skeletons eternal punishment with the rest of the narrative. The best thing I can say is that, generally, when Skeletons are destroyed/killed/die in the Place, their existence continues even though they're a pile of bones. It's kind of the same thing with the other Undead: zombies continually overdose and reanimate; vampires continually betray each other and reanimate. However, when zombies and vampires are killed by a Reaper, their souls are collected by the entity and they can finally move on. Skeletons, on the other hand, don't get that luxury. When they're killed by a Reaper, it's the same effect as if they killed themselves or died by another means; their existence continues even though they're a pile of bones on the ground, and their soul stays with them, never being guided to the Afterlife by a Reaper. Generals have the ability to put those bones back together again, but it doesn't change anything - the skeletons still suffer the cold whether they're a pile of bones or walking around on their own two legs. Applying that to Ibzan, when the Reaper destroys him in the Mortal Plane, he's basically destroying the physical vessel that Ibzan has been using to enact his plans. Unlike other skeletons though, due to the place that he "died" (the Mortal Plane), a General will never reach him, so he'll never be reconstructed. Without his body, Ibzan will just be a piles of bones and will be forced to suffer the cold that is the punishment for Skeletons for eternity. I hope that all makes sense and that it helps. Feel free to ask more if it doesn't! Thanks for watching!

I never knew of the secret tape somehow! Kinda feel like a fool for never finding it. I gotta say, this lore analysis is pretty damn cool. I wonder what it would be like if Hopoo games made a sequel, or maybe just a game set in the world of Deadbolt. Also, any plans on Risk of Rain lore? That game has a surprising amount of lore in the background that you don't even necessarily need to find out about. Especially 2 from what I've been told. Cheers, and to many more of these.

The Flames though, the ones who technically have no responsability, as they are the authority of the world. They learn and improve. Its a rare thing in the story that,the one who was wronged didnt improve, but the overlord did.

    The Flames talk about not forgiving Izban. But they hesitate when they "A man - undead... ...cannot live with me." I wonder if the Flames not being able to forgive Izban is the fact that the Flames cannot forgive themselves for what they did to Izban. I feel like the Flames are unable to turn Izban back into a reaper and with no choice, they can release Izban from the cold via death before accepting Izban back.
