Dead Malls Season 6 Episode 2 - Macroplaza Mall
Deep in the fields of Eastern Houston’s oil fields lies the city of Pasadena. Built up in an era of prosperity, they would soon attract the attention of developers, and in turn the construction of a new mall would befall the city in the late 70s. The mall would in its lifetime go through a slough of different owners and different visions.. As of my visits in 2023 the mall has made it through that mess, and through a changing world around it. Macroplaza Mall still sits looking for a future, destined to ruin, and left behind by those who created it.. Join me today as we dive in, tell the story of, and see for ourselves how Macroplaza Mall was doing in 2023. Let’s see where Tex-Mex takes us, in this liminal theme park hell..

You killing me the intro music. Life is so short. I wish i could wake up at home while i listen to my parents distinct chatter while they served breakfast as a kid for an opportunity at redemption. 😭

Man, I basically lived in that mall as a kid. All those memories of me and my mom walking in the mall early in the morning during summer. The arcade that used to be right by the front entrance. The crown jewel, though, was the fountain. Even as a kid, i knew this place was special to me. ❤😢
This was one of my childhood malls. That Palais Royale was always there. The area in front used to be a huge fountain. The little stage thing at 12:51 was where Santa Claus and the Easter bunny set up shop. Those reddish brown rectangular floor tiles were in every Houston area mall back in the 1980s. Seeing them now gives me such a strong sense of nostalgia. They must of have been built strong to still be there after all of these years.

I could tell it was based on the looks
I live in Pasadena. The mall is on the north side of town. The city of Pasadena let the northside of town fall into disrepair. It's kind of a rough neighborhood now. The southside of town is where the city spent its money and is very nice. All the name brand stores are in a big shopping center on Fairmont Pkwy now.
this mall is unreal...
The mall is well kept no inside structure damage it could still be a great local mall with the right owners local shops would be the key 🗝️ to a refresh and new lease on life and could provide employment for the area a double awesome win indeed 😎💯🏆👍
This was the mall i went to as a teenager. Palais Royal, Dillard's, Macy's, so many memories here. Back in the early 90's, this was a place was the place to be as a teenager. It was packed, and really busy. It's really sad what has become of this mall.
Cool mall design. Thank you for your time to show the public what once was.
Loved the video! Perhaps West Oaks Mall?

West Oaks is next! Yes! I adore this mall! It's in a very sad state, it was never totally crime ridden, it was never vandalized, it was never disrespected, it just... faded away. Same can't be said for Greenspoint. It meant a lot to me growing up, Almost every day for like 2 summers (08-'09) I used to walk like 30 mins to that library nearby, play RuneScape on the computer for the 2 hours allowed, and then go to Pasadena Town Square, go to the Chick Fil-A in the food court or the Thirsty's for some good 'ol Blue Bell. The old Indian man that ran that stand was always so nice to me, and give me extra every now and then or a sample if I was running low on funds that day. I may have to head over there one last time and pay my respects. Last time I went there they were building that play place... I think that was like... 2011? It's all a bit of a blur. Either way, thanks for that small trip down memory lane.

Yes sir you got it!! Thanks for watching! I’m glad you have so many great memories of this beautiful place!
This makes me so sad 😔
The crumbling tiles of that beautifully preserved 80s era Palais Royal store speaks words. The mall had put up a good fight. I can't wait to see your take on Houston's western suburban malls!

This will forever be Pasadena Town Square. I spent tons of time at this place as a kid. The Macroplaza name doesn't even register.
I loving the old tile floors and street lamps!
I really liked this mall! It was so colorful and retro. Dead mall make me sad because I loved going to the mall as a teenager/adult. Thank you for getting footage of this mall before it ends up closing permanently. I enjoy your videos!

In its heyday it was one of the coolest places ever.
I worked there in 1994/1995 at Mrs. Fields Cookies, then at Ritz Camera. I moved out of state for a while, then moved back to the area. In 2003, I began working for T-Mobile, and had training at Mall of the Mainland (knowing I'd be managing the Pasadena Town Square store). My first day in my store, I walked in, not knowing where in the mall it was. I found it... in PRECISELY the same spot as the former Ritz Camera. It's the store past the wall next to the playground with the pink pillars. Back in my day, that playground was actually a deep pit with a giant statue of a cowboy riding a bucking ARMADILLO. That whole central area by the food court used to be a massive multi-level fountain. It was gorgeous. They set up the Santa photo area near there. While I was working at Mrs. Fields, I watched my husband (then boyfriend) work taking pics of the kids with Santa... so many memories here... we got married at the courthouse in Pasadena, then came to the food court here with our friends! It so wild watching this and saying, "That's where Chick-Fil-A was," or "There was a toy store there," etc.
That mall looked to nice to be dead. I did like the colors in the food court area. Thanks for another great one.

Oh wow! Even I never stayed in this place, I feel like I was. Great detail with the soundtrack, it was touching! The place looks so quiet and peaceful, looks like we are in the 90s. As a Mexican I tell you, this looks like an old Mexican mall. Great video!

Looks to be well preserved. Even some of the Sears signage remains
I've never heard of this place, and I've been to Houston many times, in fact i was born in this city.
I see some more channels posting updates on this mall and it’s sadder than ever. I have never been there, but this place reminds me of a fun local southwest version of the Prizm Outlets in Prinm. It really sucks to lose a place like this that really was not a copycat plain box mall.
Hey creator at 8:40 you caught a light anomaly!!!!! When you said a world of pure imagination. It hooks weirdly right in front.
A very colourful 80s gem that slowly but surely being consumed by time. Great video!
Watching this on my lunch break! Another awesome video from an amazing person! I love the aesthetics on this mall! Especially the food court!

One of two malls I would go to as a kid when coming to this side of town in the early 2000s. (Visiting my grandma.) I’ll always remember the arcade here. Playing Tekken Tag, 4, 5, the arcade version of Ballistics. Seeing the mall in the state it’s in now (Along with Almeda, the other one I’d visit.) is sad.
My girlfriend and I’s favorite tradition. Love the videos brother!
There was a giant statue of a cowboy riding an armadillo located where the playground was in the early 90’s. It was an icon bronze statue that I always wondered where it ended up?
I walked in a few weeks ago with a friend to see what was left and it looks just like your video. Surprised it was open and people were watering plants and A/C was working to some extent.
Sad how this mall died

Spent a lot of time at that mall (particularly in the old Foley's) in the 90s. I remember playing a Christmas concert on the stage at the fountain when I was in middle school band. I don't think the playground was there back then; I think there was a statue of a cowboy riding a giant armadillo there (that sounds a lot weirder now that I actually write it out); the statue was removed by the time I graduated from high school. It was also a lot less colorful back then, mostly whites and browns.
This was interesting history. That colorful mall reminds me of the Mills.
- Thank you for the new videos / season. Im going to watch this video today with my dad. - I can't stop staring at that orange and blue paint (wallpaper looking) 😮 store front. ALSO the HORSE half statues hanging store front . - Thanks again NorthCdogg AND DOOMIE GRUNT. [heart eyes].

It's wild to me that this mall--which is one of the prettiest I've ever seen--is one of few Houston malls I've never visited. Love the chandeliers, the colors, and the massive skylights. This seems like it would be a great strolling mall.

I didn't realize that the Sears was the last Sears store to open in the greater Houston area. Ironically, it was the last full line Sears store in the city before it closed in 2021.
Thank you

I love this mall, so colorful, it has a great personality. I hope it makes a come back
Perfume store closed last year, and the church found a new home. Ac hasn't been turned on in 2 or 3 years. They don't turn on the tv's anymore. The massage chairs and seats in middle of sears hallway are gone. There seems to be leaks near the indoor former sears entrance. The parking lot isn't lit at all and pitch black at night. The store you saw closed by the entrance, beauty salon, quincera store, and urban wear store, are the only businesses left , not including the tax season one. There is a beauty school. Mall closes at 6pm on sun and 7pm all other days. No food court restaurants left and no vending machines either.
Enjoying your videos this Christmas Day ❤️❤️❤️⚜️

Merry Christmas to you! Thanks for watching!
I lived near this mall growing up and clearly remember the rumors of this mall getting a second story. There was also a rumor of an 8 cinema multiplex opening adjacent to it. At the time the only first-run cinema in Pasadena was Cinema 6, which was beginning to decline in quality.
As a standalone store Foley's at Pasadena Town Square did ok. But, that mall was doomed from the start. Unfortunately Pasadena never had the economic base to support it. Traffic was always slow. during the Holidays it would pick up but not enough to keep it going. With the changes in the retail industry Foley's to Macy's and Joskie's to Dillard's and at the same time the demographics of Pasadena changed to mostly Hispanic, that just put a nail in the coffin. Baybrook Mall, a stones throw from Pasadena, is a powerhouse and draws all the economic activity to it. I went to Pasadena Town Square a many a time. If I was looking for something that Macy's at Almeda did not have I would go here to check. This mall will be bulldozed at some point. The whole area has gone downhill, poor roads and infrastructure, even the old Mervyn's and Pasadena State Bank gone. The heyday of Central Pasadena is long past and now things have moved on to Fairmont and Beltway 8.
I love the video North!
Sweet video northcdogg 🎉🎉 .. without any anchor stores, this fruity in color mall is literally just on borrowed time dude. I think this is like those malls that stayed empty but opened for years like tri County or Cincinnati, those malls never survived beyond this year and macroplaza most likely wouldn't survive beyond atleast 2024. I'm just watching your video and seeing all those empty stores, and I think it's gonna be really difficult to put foot traffic back in a mall so huge. Awesome music and awesome video .. just to add though, I think the center courtyard of this mall is absolutely beautiful.
This one was one of my go to malls as teenager. I got my first beeper and then a cellphone at the primeco store there. You said all these malls like you’re visiting and it was hilarious. In a good way. Joske’s = Jahs-Keys San Jacinto = San Juh-Cent-Oh
Maybe the playground items will get donated to the town… maybe…😢

I sure hope it does!
There was also Pasadena's only skyscraper, the First Pasadena State Bank building, on the same property, and it was built well before the mall. It was demolished in 2019. You could see the Astrodome from upper floors.
I remember going to the mall when I was young every couple of weekends. Last time I went to the Macy's was still there which tells you how long ago I was there.
You gotta do the one in Huntsville Texas. Idk it's something so sad about that place and tdcj (Texas department of criminal justice) is now a big part of that small town mall 😢
I remember when every store was open for business!! 20 years ago!! I used to hang out at the arcade by the food court!! 25-30 years ago!! Lol
I heard rumors that my local mall might be closing but I’m not for sure and will probably stay open for probably another year or 2 knowing how long it has already survived. (East hills mall st. Joseph mo)

Always amazed when Malls stay open without anchors glad the AC was working than at Greenspoint A.K.A. Gunspoint mall which is just dead with no crime. I think that Greenspoint should become mixused kinda like Pasadena/Macroplaza mall that looks so 80s never been updated. I just don't like malls becoming Rolling A in Ohio or Century 3 mall in The Steel City where they become death traps. Beyond me that the owners aren't sued for those that get seriously injured or fence it off so no one can come in.
I wanted to cry too This was special Maybe bc all of the Mexicanity, starting with that song! (Cien años - Pedro Infante) ... and those floor tiles
32nd like also is it Spring Town Plaza?
That tax office thing was where they had fashion shows. And I think Santa and the Easter bunny.
Here at 64 views
I went there in the early 2000s as a kid. Went back recntly with a friend. At this point its sad that the owner won't sell any spaces for rent. Sucks. Theyre letting it rot and my friend and I have some business that would probably freshen the place back up

Wow, I didn’t even know this one existed. Of course, I’ve never really done much more than pass through Pasadena. Another one of the many malls that was just never able to compete with Baybrook.

I am looking for short video clips of Mall fountains about one to two minutes long. I can loop them into repeats of continue hour long videos. No music or talking. Just fountain water sounds
The internet killed the malls. When you can shop in the convenience of your home witch one would you choose.?
I can't believe you actually said "the lovely city of Pasadena". 😅 That city is a giant dump with some of the worst air you would ever want the breathe.
The choice of colors inside this mall is positively hideous. It looks like a box of crayons threw up.
