The Tilt was cool, it was an arcade. Right across from it was One of a Kind Pizza, best I ever had. Kb's was cool too. Sad how things change :(

Hahaha.... Before The Tilt. It use to be called. Gold mine... And one of kind pizza, was the best pizza to have back in the day. My cousin and I use to get dropped off Saturday, walk around till we got picked up. The good ol days.... Use to get mix nuts by Kmart. Radio shack. Go watch a movie lol

I feel like this mall could survive if they get Mom and Pop stores that cater to the Hispanic and Native American communities here.

I've worked at a store there in the mall. That place still gets alot of customers. Might not look like it but it does. Go Rio West Mall. Your not dead YET!!

Kmart was located where Hobby Lobby is today. I remember stopping by there in 1989 when visiting family. It looks to have closed in 2002.

Back in the 80's we used to hang out there a lot. Get a calzone at One of a Kind pizza, a Piña Colada from Orange Julius and play Tempest and Centipede. You always had to go to KB Toys to goof around then of course hang out in the record shop. I forget the name, but maybe someone can refresh my memory. Lol. My sister worked in the mall cleaning tables and my friend worked at the candy store. We even had school performances there. Even our neighbor Bart played Santa Claus for years there. Good memories. @@cedrickscott283 I think we had the Record Bar right? If I remember correctly, it had a rug with records on it. The mall and Sonic used to be the places to go for us 80s teenagers. Lol. A band here in Colorado where I'm at used to play at the Class Act. Small world eh?

My home town lol alot of good memories when that mall was alive.

One of my favorite places to visit was Waldens Book Store. I used to buy books for my daughter and comic books for myself.

I love how that sign at the entrance says to stand 6 ft apart. I think it's pretty safe to say people are 6ft apart in that mall. lol

It’s easier to keep a safe distance in many malls than the typical grocery store or Walmart.

It’s Gallup dude! I can’t believe Gallup EVEN has a mall!

My favorite thing was to shop with my brother...go to Orange Julius grab a drink...or a slice of pizza at food court and head to the Arcade ...fun times...when I go there it just takes me back to those days and only thing missing is him

The mall was actually descent in the 2000's ESPECIALLY tilt, so many memories in that arcade.

Mid day on a weekday makes any mall dead. Pretty busy on the weekends.

Gallup Mall! Was lit 🔥 back in 2003-2011 I remember meeting Mr.Capone-E in the FYE 2009 dude was a packed mall!!! Shit sad how it really died out

Yeah man same here. I grew up there in the 90’s. Such nostalgia feels when I read people describe what it was like for them and that it’s still kicking. Haven’t been back to visit family since March 7 2020. Take care!

Remember those days back in 2000 - 2001. When the mall used to be crowded and that when the cruisers around the mall used too happen. I miss them days. Yup especially Class Act when it was open

Gold Mine was fun yrs back. After 21 Class Act was fun too. There used to be a Sesame street kind spot to have pizza in the 80's😄

Wow, I'm now 38. I only see 4 places that were there during my childhood. I do miss One of a Kind Pizza, Tilt and Movie theater that used to be across from the every present Orange Julius. This video brought back so many memories.

Another great Dead Mall video, well done.

Well, this mall doesn't look TOO dead. But once the JC Penney inevitably goes away...

Subbed. Every single mall I see reminds me of my teen years,90's.... where life was so cool and simple and fun. Thank you for the video. It is depressing but at the same time I am grateful that malls are being documented for future generations that will have no idea what they are.

On paydays and weekends and special events it is PACKED. its our only mall and its small but i love it and glad it is there. I go into all of the stores and when my daughter gets older im sure she will love it too.

I worked at the JC Penney 39 years ago. Good memories 🤠 Loved this nall when I lived in Gallup❣️

I grew up in NE Arizona and crazy enough, this was our closest mall at about 90 minutes away. I remember one of the anchors was Kmart, then it closed when the new super Walmart opened. Bealls was halfway decent back in the day, more upscale than JCPenney but no where near a mid-tier department store.

My dad used to teach at Ganado High School in the late 80s before we moved out to CA(I eventually moved out to NM back in 2012). Gallup seemed to be the center of affairs for that entire region and I wouldn't be too surprised if he took the family there when we were all toddlers/infants.

So many memories. I remember riding my skateboard every payday from Wendy's to cash my check. Good times

This mall is alive and kicking again with new stores including ROSS and Five and Below stores added this years. There's also Hobby Lobby in the old K-Mart location too.

The Rio is making a come back. Hope they keep the momentum going into 2023.

Bummer they took out the benches, how does someone go to take a break. In California, the malls have kept the benches and the rest areas. I do notice a hobby lobby store. One of my favorite stores.

Surprised a dead place stuck in time has a pretty updated Hot Topic (you can tell from the grey exterior) and also a Hobby Lobby and F.Y.E.

I guess all the times I went through Gallup, I never noticed this place. Of course now I live way on the other side of the state in Clovis and we have our own mall over here that seems to be sinking into the abyss as well. Everyone either does Wally World up Prince street, or just drive across into Texas to get to one of the big malls in Amarillo or Lubbock.

I'm in Oregon. Our mall here isn't much different. One end has been turned into a cool arcade. Games, bowling, snack bar. It's clean and lots of families are in there playing games. It's very cool.

This is the only mall ive ever knew so well. Along with the town. This place had its perks and other times, its not the best. The stores like Hobby Lobby, Hot Topic, Shoe Dept., Orange Julius, FYE, and others. They are the only stores of their kind that is within that town. Its one of the first towns to be built in the Northwest of New Mexico. It has a small downtown that has stores that keep our Navajo tradition alive. Where we have parades but include traditional dances. My favorite being the Rain Dance. This town only has our necessities, we don't have much like any other cities. We barely have about 2 main parks. One is mostly used for school trips. 2 movie theaters, one that is at the end of town and is much more popular. So sorry if this mall is trash or boring to some of you. But this is the only place of which we can get some other things. And for those liking the old style of it. Thank you so much. I love this mall, its small but you can find so much there. Sorry that this comment is long. Just wanted to say something about this. I want to get out of the house and go there now.

You should go to animas valley mall in Farmington NM just north of Gallup some of the stores are open and some have spaces. Maybe almost dead mall there at animas valley mall.

I use to work in the theater at that mall. It use to be super busy back in the day. Pizza, arcade and there was a popular bar that attracted people for pool and dancing.

I live up in Farmington and frequented Gallup when growing up. It was dying then. Fun to see it now.

Rio West mall! We used to have a Kmart but that passed! A candy shop and a nail Solon yep. The pizza place and the Twin Cinema was cool to watch movies at. Back on the mid to late 90’s

It's interesting to read the comments from people who've obviously never been to the southwest, let alone Gallup.....

This mall is doing much better with inline occupancy, than I would've guessed at first glance! Sad to see Beall's is closing. And of course, you never know if the JCPenney here will later close, or not. Hopefully it doesn't close anytime soon, but we'll see. And I love the look of the mall, by the food court! That part was my favorite, when it came to aesthetics. Though I liked those planters and benches, too. And the ceiling bulbs were also cool to see, even if they were turned off. Sucks they removed the benches, probably because of COVID worries. Hopefully, that isn't permanent. I suspect the interior look here is probably mostly original, to whenever this mall first opened? Finally, thank you for mentioning a little history about Gallup, NM, in your video. One final question about Rio West: was there ever a fountain at 4:22 in this vid, years ago?

During the weekends, especially before the pandemic, a substantial amount of people go there since most of the business Gallup gets is from people who live in the reservations and other small towns nearby. When Gallup locked down in March/April and only Gallup citizens were allowed in and no one from the reservations or other travelers, the streets looked so empty like I’ve never seen them before.

As far as I know they do have craft fairs and more stores have opened up now in 2022. when tilt was in business it was such a busy place.

stalls had no doors, so every time you would see a person you saw earlier taking a dump or vise versa.

Doesn't seem that abandoned, you should see the mall in Roswell, NM. It's super empty, another cool little city in NM.

The aesthetic may look dated but that style never seems to change throughout NM.

I haven't been to that mall in probably 15+ years and it pretty much looks the same. They've never really had a good selection of actual food in the food court in my opinion. Also, my grandma used to work in the "famous" motel you mentioned. We used to tease her that she missed her chance to marry John Wayne 😄

Wow, never knew they have a mall. I used to work for a company based there and then I lived on the rez.

Damn, brings back memories, that mall use to have a bar too.

I don’t know who knows who on the Internet so I casually recommended it last night before the live stream aired.

There was a theater too by the food court I believe.

They still have some decent stores in that mall, I wouldn't say it's completely dead. FYE, Hot Topic, Rue 21, Finish Line and Foot Locker, I love those stores.

Interesting. Our local upscale (and one of the few) thriving mall is Cushman & Wakefield. And I'm in Atlantic Canada.

I can confirm Sunvet is a cool, little vintage treasure -- last old school mall on LI. Pathmark and AC Moore are gone now.

Hobby Lobby was a Furniture store and Kmart store in 80’s era. Kmart was popular just like Walmart today etc.

The Bealls makes me think of Sears, both in layout and the fact it too hasn’t done well.

This mall was popping back in the 90s, it had it's own little theater, popular stores back in the day. Until a couple of years ago, it had a bar which attracted a lot of people as well. On weekends, the center of the mall always had some type of performance. Stores have come and gone.

Went to a mall last year well maybe 1.5 years ago and lost about 20bin the stacker game and the keyhole key one. Over here in santa the malls have been dead for decades now. I tell my kids this was where we used to come a d just get out. See a movie ,check out the toy store,CD tapes , the 3d picture store the knife store play some arcade it was cool af then ,now it's just like this place.

You should go to a mall in Mexico there booming..

reminds me a LOT of Kandi Mall in Willmar MN

Mall still looks like it's 1980.

I live here in Gallup. This mall is basically a giant shoe store. They were not stopping people for two weeks. They DID stop vehicles and let them know that only 2 people are allowed in vehicles, in McKinley County. The hotel is the ElRancho and it is “home of the stars”, still operating. Ghost adventures just did a recording there last month actually.

The mall's lease space are outrageous

They could remake the "Shining" in there

There was an Miller Outpost clothing store that sells Levi’s brands and OP Ocean Pacific clothing brands too! Back in the 80’s era. I use to get my school clothes there with my parents and in high school years I just wanted to go by myself to buy my clothes to be independent etc. LoL 😆 👍 Miller Outpost was at the Shoe Dept Encore now. That was Miller Outpost clothing store. Also, across from Shoe Dept Encore was an music store called the Record Bar. Now is FYE music store etc. There was an KB Toys store between Shoe Dept Encore and an Ashley Furniture HomeStore. JC Penny store is still there when the Rio West Mall started in 1980’s etc. 🇺🇸🙏👍

Vintage aesthetics...a nice way of saying run down!🤣 that mall has been slowly dying since I moved to this area 22 years ago. COVID-19 hit this area really hard. At one point the Navajo Nation had the highest per capita rate of infection. The historic El Rancho hotel, that you spoke of, was used to house homeless COVID-19 cases (Gallup has a very large homeless population).

I like how you are avoiding the arrows which control the, stay 6 feet away covid-19 cdc prevention rule. Good job 👍

Compared to Albuquerque, Gallup is only a fraction of that city. Gallup is a small town. Not a city.

That would've never slipped my mind lol I was 7 years old when I ate there. I remember those huge illuminated pictures of Chinese cities displayed on the walls, and their giant TV haha
