I did NOT expect a reaction to this song to pop up in my inbox!!! DCD are a band that I grew up to thanks to my mom. This particular song is my absolute favorite song of all time. One of my most favorite memories growing up is to this song. When I was 5, I went with my parents and some of my family to Mexico to visit my great-grandparents. It was the winter and as we drove through Texas there was a snowstorm. I remember lying down in the backseat on my mom's lap and seeing the rushing snow outside at night with only the lights from cars around. I'll always treasure that moment. Brendan Perry and Lisa Gerrard are incredible songwriters/musicians. I'm fortunate enough to have seen them live during their 2012/2013 tour with my mom. I highly recommend checking out their songs Enigma Of The Absolute, Ocean, Song Of The Stars, and Yulunga (Spirit Dance) (which is from the same album as TCIO, Into The Labyrinth).

I really liked this song and found it very relaxing. The singers vocal timbre sorta reminded me of Frank Sinatra, which is my way of saying he sounded really good on this track. Musically, I like the atmosphere the instruments created to support the vocals. Good choice and nice reaction.

Great reaction! And thank you for keeping it 100. I've been a DCD fan for over 30 years and if you ever get a chance to see them perform live, you will never live to regret it. Seeing them perform live was like a religious experience, I never experienced so many goosebumps from a band performance. I LOVE Brendan Perry's voice (major swooning)..haha yes and "deep brooding" is a good way to put it. His voice reminds me of Frank Sinatra, Jim Morrison and Neil Diamond, lol.

This could quite possibly be my favourite song of songs. I loved this song since I was a teenager in the mid 1990's. While going through labour, I had a two hour playlist of 20 - 30 DCD songs. "The Carnival is Over" being my favourite. My daughter was born when it came up. It's the first music she ever heard in her first minutes. She hates it. 😆

5 High end headphones. Awesome song analysis. Singer sounded a little like Sinatra. The ambience of the song reminded me of old “standards”. Peggy Lee’s ‘Is That All Is’ is a very dark 3 Martini song. That was early Sixties cool before the Beatles and The Beach Boys took over. See the tv show “Mad Men” for a look at the swinging sixties. Avant-garde electronica and experimentalism with different soundscapes was very common (in NY, London, San Francisco at least). Some of the middle era Beatles albums were groundbreaking in their use of different, often bizarre, sound effects (see ‘For the Benefit of Mr Kite’). The early seventies brought PF, Yes, Genesis, Zappa....the list goes on a way. These were my formative years of music exploration, and as such, greatly influenced my “tastes” Dark Wave sounds interesting. Maybe I’ll incorporate it into my infinitely expanding playlist. My latest music obsession is Steven Wilson and Spock’s Beard. Just when you think you heard it all, something new reaches Out and grabs you;).

This is not exactly dark wave, so be careful with your picks based on that. For a similar sound, the band Echo & The Bunnymen in later phases of their career will come close to this. Killing Moon, for instance. The singer went through some voice changes (for whatever reason, but I feel he was imitating David Byrne from Talking Heads, at first). At the point of Killing Moon he trends towards Sinatra. This is still considered dark wave, I believe. The distinction between new wave and dark wave can be fickle, as with all subgenres.

Brendan did a tour on his own some years ago and I saw him in DC in a small venue, 6th and I St Synagogue. It was his first stop in the States, just magical and he even did requests. At the end of the night he didn't return to the stage and the audience, I'm not kidding, applauded for a full 10 minutes at top volume to convince him to come back out. That's a lo-o-ong time for an encore plea! I yelled myself silly. He finally reappeared and sang several more songs. I'm not sure what the delay was about but always wondered if he needed to be convinced how much his audience loved him.

Loved the beginning. Didn't like the constant synth chimes and horns, whatever it is. His voice ranges between the dude from Echo & The Bunnymen and Frank Sinatra. Crooners, pretty much. From the former, I would suggest Killing Moon. For a similar "beat" and atmosphere, I would recommend How Beautiful You Are by The Cure. Not too familiar with this band. Definitely not with this period of their music. Only know their debut which contains a song called In Power We Entrust The Love Advocated (highly recommended! I guess that is my kind of music, to keep that comparison). There's a nice cover done by one of my favorites bands, The Gathering. But the original is great. The album has a bit of a tribal feel. Sounds similar to Siouxsee and the Banshee or Cocteau Twins. There seems to be a clear division. Lisa Gerrard gets the songs that sound like Enya, with tribal percussion and non-English lyrics. Brendan Perry gets the songs with bass that are more dark wave. Here's another interesting bit: The song preceding the aforementioned one is called Carnival of Light. Could well be that the song featured here is in direct reference to that. UPDATE: Just listening to it. There are the same kind of chimes, but they ring much darker and the song is delivered by Lisa Gerrard. Instantly prefer this by several magnitudes. Their debut is great.
