Thanks for this, will try the activation exercise! Would you please do a video on knee maltracking? Would really appreciate it! The exercises the PT gave me aren't helping my knee pain.

I dunno about there being no such thing as glute amnesia. I’ve trained them tons using a lot of different exercises including 400-lb barbell squats back in the day and other lifts and have never felt them contract, never gotten them sore. Heavy squats have nuked my quads, and that is about it.

Yeah I think it's possible to have impingement of L5-S1 which innervate the glutes

Thanks so much for the comment. I think that the reason I say there is no such thing as gluteal amnesia is because people think that this means the glutes aren't working or aren't activated at all, which isn't the case. You'd never be able to squat 400 pound if your glutes were doing absolutely nothing. However, it can definitely be a thing to just feel like you don't have that connection and awareness to the glutes and what they are doing. We find it very common for people to say they get very sore in the quads during squats over the glutes. Squats are actually more of a quad dominant movement, which is part of this, but you also might be using them even extra because of your lack of connection with the glutes. Sometimes, it might help to prime the glutes using exercises like bridges, hip thrusts, or a dead lift variation to focus more on the glutes.

Having had bilateral lateral flap breast reconstruction after breast cancer, I don't really have the full fascia from lat to glute. That explains a lot about my glute issues...well, that & early surgical menopause

Things like that can definitely always impact our connection to certain muscles!
