I didn’t realize it was connected to Sandman until the opening scenes when Kirby showed up as Death. That was a pleasant surprise! I also appreciated all the use of old school practical (non-CGI) effects. It seemed very intentional and nostalgic.

It’s wild that you put out this review after I just completed watching Dead Boy Detectives.

That show was very good! I loved it!

This had been one of the shows I had been anticipating and I was delighted that it lived up to my expectations. One of the similarities to Supernatural (at least the first few seasons) is that there is a satisfying conclusion at the end of the season in case they don't come back. A big difference is that the gay subtext became text from the second episode on rather than leaving it until the final appearance of a main character. Some of the episodes were better than others. The two appearances of the Endless were great. It's funny without the quippiness that's become part of the Marvel movies. I loved the two sprites. The Evil Characters get to be Evil instead of misguided or misunderstood. That's a refreshing change. I FLOVE the Cat King. What I would want to see in a second season SPOILERS A follow up with Despair calling Edwin a friend and mentioning that she's going to call in a favour in the future. I like the idea of The Dead Boy Detectives as agents of Despair. (Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression and Acceptance.) I want to see Edwin going on a date with the Cat King. We could have follow up with Crystal Palace Surname von Hovercraft, or not. Her arc could have ended with getting her memories back and burying David the Demon in her mind. I'd love Niko and the Sprites to return. They could be an entry into Faerie/Inuit mythology. If not Crystal, Jenny could join the boys as a Medium. I'd like to see other overlaps with Sandman. Something like a case where they have to work with Joanna Constantine or meet Lucien in the Library of Dreams.

This show is similar to Lockwood & Co which I feel is similar to The Midnight Club (I haven’t watched it yet; that’s next on the docket) and the Fear Street series, which I feel all fall under the same umbrella as Stranger Things. Dead Boy Detectives also kinda reminds me of the Preacher series from AMC; very campy, dark humor with a wild story.

I'll be sure to check out the show now that you've given your review. It looked a little cheesy to me from the trailer so I didn't bother but I'll give an episode or two a try based on your recommendation.

I didn’t know its origins until watching. Always here for more representation.

I too, am hoping it gets another season and that it gets even more queer (there are so many possibilities). Same thing for Lockwood & Co, but they need to give the guy with the glasses and the curly hair the Edwin treatment and have him be explicitly gay or queer, and not just subtly pining after his straight friend.

This show was dope

The CGI sucks?... I thought it was amazing, not to mention the practical effects. Honestly, people are so snotty these days.

I agree with you. I appreciated their use of practical effects. And I thought the CGI was just right. They were not meant to have the scale of Sandman as this is all “street level.”
