Lyrics
You're tired and you say you're angry
You're thankful for this blessed rain
And you think you'd know
But your old friends have to tell you again
Your books taught you all you know
Your tastes and patterns and your TV shows
But you can never follow where they won't let you go
Sometimes it's so hard to know
You want to display your charms
On this bright night
You want to display your charms
On this bright night
You want to display your charms
Over these circus Christmas lights
Your cares your misanthropy
Your distant gaze is missing me
And your jewellery that's what blinded me
From the reality
You want to display your charms
On this bright night
You want to display your charms
On this bright night
You want to display your charms
Over these circus Christmas lights
You want to display your charms
On this bright night
You want to display your charms
On this bright night
You want to display your charms
Over these circus Christmas lights
Over the sea
Over the land and the city

This is at the Glasgow SECC in December 1989. My friends were at the show. Growing up in Glasgow in the late 80s Deacon Blue were utterly woven into the human experience as much as food and sleep. I finally got to see them at Glasgow Green on The Big Day in summer 1990. Fantastic.

A great comment. It must have been an exciting time. It is a shame that The Big Day has not been released on DVD as far as I am aware. Deacon Blue's performance on the day looks good though it is hard to tell from the poor quality footage on You Tube. Ricky Ross' condemnation of Labour ( I am a socialist) for betraying Scotland was entirely apt and it is just as valid today when considering the political class as a whole. I live in England and have to say I am very impressed by the conduct of SNP MPs in parliament; it is clear they know their subjects and they speak with a directness combined with authenticity.

MrMark2007 It's brilliant. When I listen to tracks like this I wonder why Deacon Blue didn't have more success. It's good to see they're still around though, 30 years after they formed.

I first heard these on a drunk two weeks 18 to 30s holiday and they played this album daily by the hotel pool bar. Lived and loved it ever since. I love Raintown, this town, wages day, real gone kid, chocate girl, love and regret and so many more. Writing this I am 51, but I remember being 18 and this as clear as ever. People will always say music isn't the same now, but some music and bands just stick with you. This is one of them.

Beautiful, uplifting and moving all in one. DB are one of the finest bands of the last forty years. This affects me just as much in 2017 as it did on first listen in the summer of 1989. I saw them at Leicester de Montfort Hall in May 1989 but I wish I had been at the SECC concert(s).

80s Music I couldn’t agree more. The spring and summer of 89 were the most emotional, awesome days of my late teens. I was 18 and adored ‘when the world knows your name’ My first love and I would sit in her room listening to music talking for hours

He was a few years younger than the rest of the band and relatively new to professional music when suddenly thrust into the limelight with Deacon Blue, which makes his achievement all the more impressive. He seems very affable on the few occasions I have seen him on programmes broadcast in England from Scotland. All of the band were proficient musicians in backing Ricky and Lorraine's vocals. I am watching the live concert on the DVD and it is amazing. Very powerful and emotional.

I am often disappointed when a live recording exposes the shortcomings of artists that really can't cut it when away from the studio (or are propped up by the electronic crutch of Autotune etc.) Circus Lights has always been a favourite of mine and credit is due to everyone involved (including the sound dudes and dudettes) for this utterly amazing version. Lorraine seems a bit enthusiastically pissed-up, but hey, far preferable to a dumbass mancunian who is absolutely static in a puffa jacket with arms behind their back. Thanks, Deacon Blue

Highly unlikely in the case of your comment about Lorraine McIntosh. But I agree about the ridiculousness of the nineties trend for pop stars wearing outdoor clothing on stage. So cringeworthy and a sign of stupidity, naturally.
