De-yellowing Lego with(out) the sun: everything you need to know
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
How to de-yellow Lego. I'm building a Lego 80's town and a lot of bricks that come with the sets that I've bought on Bricklink were yellowed. To have a nice town, I decided to de-yellow every gray and white parts in my town using sunlight and a hydrogen peroxide solution. I started with this in early spring of 2019. As the winter of 2019/2020 arrived, I wasn't done with de-yellowing Lego parts. But the weather outside didn't want me to continue (rain, cloudy weather). So I decided to build my own sun!
I built a device which de-yellows Lego. This device contains two 300W UV-A light bulbs and a water temperature control system. I can set the time for how long the light bulbs need to be enabled. The automatic shutdown prevents my Lego parts to be over exposed.

One word describes your being in You Tube: patience. Everyone knows that projects like your require time and time. You do that for as best end result as possible. You are able to even expand your knowledge for it. Not every day it's met. I see your effort in each detail in your videos. And it always motivate me to improve my way of filming. I hope we will soon see final video of 12V LEGO Trains. And obviously may the COPPA wouldn't destroy your work...Have a nice day ;D

I adore the 80’ vibe of your train layouts and city builds. Hearing that clicking noise of the switches motors brings me 25 years back.
Thanks for making this video! It helpful to know how to de-yellow bricks so if I buy some 80s (and even 70s) Lego sets, I can restore the bricks and make the set look better. Keep up the good work!
Super comprehensive de-yellowing video, good job! I won't say I've seen more than a few videos but your vid is the best so far. A tip I picked up from another video is using a clear pyrex bowl to keep the pieces fully submerged so the light hits all the elements and you don't have to worry about moving anything around to evenly expose everything. Perhaps several new square/retangular pyrex casserole dishes for larger soaking tubs. Unfortunately I don't have the space to create such a relatively elaborate de-yellowing station but definitely on my list if I ever have the space for one! Nicely done Arjen 👍
This is really cool! I need something like this because my studio is in a large commercial building, and I don’t really want to leave my LEGO on the sidewalk or even on the roof unattended, and those are the only two places I could access sunlight
I love your videos! They inspire me to be more creative
That looks like a lot of work. You are very dedicated. I'm glad to see that you have set some videos back to normal (not for kids) since we last communicated in the comments. It is a good thing that COPPA wasn't as damaging as we thought initially. Keep up the good work 👍

Cool
Great video for showing how to de-yellow bricks. Fortunately I don't have many that would need this treatment but it's a handy resource if I ever need the info 👍 Is there more info about solution strength somewhere?
@almightyarjen
4 жыл бұрын
Thanks. The solution strength is a bit of trial and error. I wrote a bit about it in the article on my website; see link in the video description.
Idea: Either use clear glass blocks or suction cups from the other side to hold the plates down.
Here where I live, we don't get sun in the winter, we don't get sun in summer time neither! I have about 10kg yellowed bricks and some of them are rare staffs! I would love to apply your technic but I don't understand any detail of how you did it. Would you mind giving me some detailed tips to start with? You have me on facebook if you recall. Cheers
Nice explanation of de-yellowing the Bricks with the Ardiono controller. Maybe a suggestion for the software controlling the lights and the fan. Because de-yellowing mainly works around 25 degrees why don`t you use the water temperature measurement for automatically prolonging the time the lights are on in case the water temperature is too low? For example only start counting the de-yellowing time if the water temperature is above a certain value?
@almightyarjen
4 жыл бұрын
You could do that, but the process works also below 25 degrees (let's say from 10 degrees and above) but less efficient. How long to process parts is also due to how much they have been yellowed. The last one cannot be measured (easily) so that's why I do that manually. The software itself is pretty basic: enable light bulbs at start, wait until set time has elapsed and disable the light bulbs. In the mean time check temperature and adjust fan speed accordingly.
looks good would be nice if you did an update in a couple of years to see if thay have re-yellowed, is the space set "XT-Starship 6780"
@almightyarjen
4 жыл бұрын
Correct, it's the 6780! I'll post an update in a few years about the status of the de-yellowed parts.

Hi, how's the colour now? Keen to know if it lasted
Have you whitened your 12V rails and what about junctions / control boxes? Am concerened about the metal / electronics but have heavily yellowed pieces.
@almightyarjen
2 жыл бұрын
No I haven't. The metal conductors of the rails are hollow so there's not a good way to dry them, making them rust from the inside out over time. The same goes for the control boxes.
Nice setup. Reminds me of my 80's Town/Train setup only mine had a slightly smaller railway. I too am starting down the path of the de-yellowing my Lego in the hope to build it up again. Started with the sun idea a few weeks back, and it worked to a degree (am in NZ, so full summer sun). But transparent bricks didn't really de-yellow. Attempting black UV light now prior to watching your video. Not sure if I want to continue that path. Finally a question on you storage units at the back of the town. Are they any particular brand or do you know where you purchased them from? Thanks!

@@almightyarjen Thanks!
Thank you for uploading this, I plan on using the hydrogen peroxide solution myself. I cam across other videos in regards to that solution. It looks like for many people the yellowing cam back after a while even worse. Did you experience the same for the once you did in summer? Thank you and keep up the good work
@almightyarjen
4 жыл бұрын
No, I don't have that experience so far. Some parts have been de-yellowed almost a year ago and they still look the same as the ones that have just been de-yellowed. Maybe what you're saying is the case when the parts are exposed to sunlight again. I make sure that there isn't any direct sunlight in my Lego room.

Thank you for answering my question. I will go ahead with the de-yellowing then , I got quite some pieces which I would need to replace anyway due to sun damage.
How do the bricks and pieces you used this process for look now? Was it effective and how well was the color maintained several months after doing this?
@almightyarjen
2 жыл бұрын
The bricks are after 2 years still white as new. I believe the treatment reversed the yellowing process, which means it'll take years before the yellowing is back, like with new bricks.

I watched a video where a guy did this and he said a couple months later all his pieces turns even more yellow than before. Have any of your pieces turned back yellow?
@almightyarjen
2 жыл бұрын
No none. Parts I deyellowed a few years ago are still white. Maybe if you expose the parts to direct sunlight they would yellow faster than normal.
Forgot to ask, I don't remember hearing in the video or seeing on your webpage; is the solution straight H2O2? Is it reusable? I hope so, you use a HUGE tub of it!
@almightyarjen
2 жыл бұрын
I use 9% but 3% or 6% will do just fine with sunlight. It's definitely reusable! After a while you'll notice that the process becomes less effective and the solution has worn out but that occurs after 15 runs or so.
hello! nice video and i think i will do the same methode as you because in france the sun isnt something you see often in the winter period. i wanted to know what uv light bulb you used and where to get they from? because i have seen other youtube videos where they simply use a blacklight led strip and it works ( the video was on deyellowing a Nintendo controller) so i dont know if it will work for lego aswell thanks!
@almightyarjen
Жыл бұрын
Blacklight seems to work also but not as efficient: you need a peroxide solution with a higher amount of H2O2 in it. I use these bulbs: www.osram.com/ecat/ULTRA-VITALUX%20UV-A-UV-A-Ultraviolet%20lamps-Industry-Specialty%20Lighting/com/en/GPS01_1028569/

I get this question a lot. All bricks are still as white as before.
Mooie uitleg Arjen. Een vraag voor velen duidelijk beantwoord
I'm using hydrogen peroxide 36% and modified led uv nail lamp 9v in total, made dyi to remove timer to have permanent light, added also some heatsinks on back of leds to cool them a little. I'm keeping yellowed bricks for 24h, sometimes 48h if it's really yellow. Old light grey is very sensitive for uv light exposure, sometimes keep original color sometimes moving a little to white gradient. Sometimes after a year need to re-do whitening because some bricks starts to yellow a little. But after 2-3 cycles, one cycle per year, now some sets after even 2y from last whitening ale still in good shape
@almightyarjen
3 жыл бұрын
36% at 24h is way too long; you'll damage the internal structure of the parts. They look nice but will be less strong for sure.

@almightyarjen

Your 2 weeks is nonsense. I discovered that indeed some parts yellow a bit over time but this starts only after a year or longer. This has to do with the free bromides that go to the surface. That the yellowing is worse than before is not true too. I'm currently running a test for comparison on a long period of time (2 years) without any (day)light.
