De Bethune Part 1: Inside the Manufacture

Ойын-сауық

High up in the Swiss Jura mountains lies the remote village of L’Auberson, far-removed from civilisation but where independent watchmaking continues to thrive.
In this first part of a new series, Wei visits the manufacture of De Bethune, the master watchmaker at the cutting edge of horology since 2002.

Thanks for the great interview! I really admire De Bethune for a long time and this was the first interview where we didn't only see a lot of stunning DB pieces but also got to know a lot about the company and its mastermind Denis Flageollet. Awesome!

Brilliant video. Seeing the watch tourbillon start to life is like watching magic. Not a massive DB fan, but can appreciate the artistry and workmanship here. That blue colour is stunning.

There is something really endearing about a watch maker that doesn't comb their hair. I don't mean that in an insulting way at all. You know they are all in on their work and craft. For them it is all about the work and not about cultivating hype or a cult of brand personality. Still underappreciated. Hard to understand at first and even slightly polarizing, these watches, I believe, will be highly coveted in the future. It takes a watch with a strong personality to stir future passion. DB doesn't play it safe, they are all in.

He took 30 minutes to style his hair in the morning to look like that.

DeBethune has become an unattainable grail watch. Absolutely beautiful craftsmanship. Merci Pierre e Denis.

I think Wei probably is the most in style Chinese guy that dresses, walks and talks like an Italian or French fashion designer. He is flamboyant but just in a cool and lovely way.

@@vgcamara Chinese in the greater Chinese community is an ethnic & cultural term, not nationality referring. Singapore has 74% of its population being Chinese, its founding father and all successive prime ministers being Chinese, and especially here I was mainly talking about one person's dressing, disposition and behavioral style, so it makes no sense to link his nationality for this comparison if the overall ethnic view is more representing. Just like if a Chinese American looks like a white guy, will you say he is probably the American that has most similar face structure to white people?

I have always been a fan of the technology, not the aesthetics. The StarTrek-alluding motif/form cheapens and limits their watches. When De Bethune decides to improve on their aesthetics, count me in.
