DCS World - A-4E - Iron Hand in Haiphong, Vietnam 1972

Ойындар

In May 1972, Operation Linebacker against North Vietnam was in full swing. USS Hancock launched an Alpha Strike against an industrial target near Haiphong harbor with two A-4 Skyhawks from VA-55 flying Iron Hand - SAM suppression mission. Lt. Dennis Sapp and Lt. Ken Bray were armed with cluster bombs and Shrike missiles and their job was to neutralize or destroy any SA-2 site that posed threat to the main strike force. In this historic reenactment, you will be able to see if they were successful.

    Great Video! I actually got to meet one of the A-4 pilots from this video. I had the honor to meet Denny Sapp a few times back in my teens in the mid to late 1980's. My best friend's dad was flying with him as an airline pilot back then. Denny is a really good guy and was also very enthusiastic to talk about aviation, even with a couple of teenagers like my friend and I. Denny ended up having a pretty interesting aviation career and had rec'd numerous decorations, including I believe, for the mission presented here. Interestingly, just a couple weeks earlier in April of 1972, Denny had played an important role in the rescue of Lt. Col. Iceal E. "Gene" Hambleton. Denny had led a flight of several A-4's that provided air cover and air support during the rescue. The rescue of Lt. Col. Iceal E. "Gene" Hambleton was later dramatized in the movie Bat*21 staring Gene Hackman as Hambleton. A few years after this mission, Denny became a Blue Angeles Pilot for a couple seasons in the mid 1970's, I believe. By the late 70's Denny retired from active duty but remained in the Naval Reserves, eventually commanding VA/VFA 305 out of NAS Point Mugu. This was around the time that I had first met him. He also went on to spend over 25 years as an airline pilot, eventually retiring as a Delta Air Lines captain in the mid 2000's. But, I hear he's had a pretty active retirement doing a lot of volunteer work assisting homeless veterans get housing thru VA assistance programs. I believe he has also been active in volunteering for an NGO that helps prevent the trafficking of women and children in South East Asia. On one of his return trips from this volunteer work he got a chance to stop and visit Hanoi and Hai Phong. Denny is just an all around good guy and I thought I should provide a little more context about him for anyone interested.

    Thank you for such elaborate feedback and sharing your personal experience. Many of those pilots do have very interesting lives, once you get to know more. Sapp's involvement in the rescue of Col Hambleton is something that I intend to cover in the future. Sadly, the Bat 21 movie doesn't mention any Skyhawk involvement and that's a bit unfair, I think.

  • @showtime112

    @showtime112

    3 жыл бұрын

    Thank you for your question. As I understand it, Iron Hand was the term for this kind of mission only used during the Vietnam War. It was basically SAM suppression, especially those flying just ahead of the main strike force. Wild Weasel perhaps means more a type of an aircraft equipped to carry specialized weapons such as Shrike. This term was used long after the war to call for example F-4G version. If anyone else knows more, feel free to comment.

This falls into that category. Personally, late 60s and early 70s are my favorite music period and I know it very well. And this song sounds a lot like that. As for all ages, most of my viewers are 35+. People under 18 are less than one percent, for example.
