If modelled F/A-18C configuration is from year 2005 i wonder why it even have AIM-7. Don't think that US used AIM-7 at that time. And Hornet was anyway ducked down because it has no TWS yet implemented. Anyway, even ducked down Hornet gonna nail that frenchie as its still much better AC with better weapons.

Lol I have a shortcut for 2 and 5, but usually its 5 indeed. I need to learn how to edit the countermeasures permanently, it also bothers me on the Hog as I edit before every flight.

Congratulation for both of you. Mirage pilot over-reacted twice to your launches (60km and 40km). No need to make all these manœuvres at these ranges. He lost the SA down in mountains. But 1 Vs 1 in Fox 1 Vs Fox 3 set up is really hard.

Jo Jo Against a radar guided missile, one should do a beam maneuver by turning perpendicular to the attacking jet, wait until the missile is closing and turn back into the fight so the missile overshoots. By going on the beam, it limits the Doppler shift and breaks the radar lock.

Very educational. I still fly Mirage on your server against Fox3’s. My learning curve on defensive maneuvering has gone up like never before. I’m not up yet in closing the gap with heaters cause I lose my opponent’s position dodging his Fox3’s. One day I’ll get there. Thank You for sharing.

absolutely, But I was extremely impressed with his ability to even out those odds. especially when he started the engagement with the odds extremely in my favor. I might have killed him but he was deff the better pilot here.

The radio blabber in the background made it more immersive at the same time somewhat surreal. Some are talking over coms in another-day-in-the-office-style one is experiencing silently a duel to the end which could suddenly result in a cruel and painful death being engulfed in a ball of fire oO Anyhow I immensly enjoy these videos and the radio background adds alot in the end.

Super crazy. According to Wikipedia the upgraded version or AIM-120D has a classified range, but many have speculated it to be around 160km. What a mind blowing advantage. Almost triple your initial engagement length. You could have waited until then to switch on the radar and lock him up and gun him down. Or, lock him up from super far. Also, don’t take the profile picture seriously.

Why were you throwing out so much flares during the early BVR fase? From your RWR you knew the opponent was not a Russian plane (with R-27T or ET missiles) and that he was too far for a AIM-9 shot.

@@GrowlingSidewinder load up an F-18 with sparrows, and take on that mirage. The F-18 is older than the AMRAM.

Mirage guy here, honestly, Fox-1 vs Fox-3 is an interesting fight. I've beaten Hornets before, but generally it's because I lure them into weak positions and employ defensive tactics before we go sub 20 miles (get lower and fall back into mountains; spoof the radar and give me more space to maneuver my aircraft). After the Hornet follows, like they often do, send a long 530 to push them defensive. If they want to lose the 530, they have to dive into the mountains, therefor forcing them to lose the radar advantage. After that, I just have to close the distance, get to the merge, and come out on top. Overall great fight on both parts. Edit: This is my typical defensive to offensive tactic when engaged with Fox 3 aircraft.

10:00 If he hasn't been maneuvering a lot, he can be legitimately worried that he's seeing a pitbull that's had a leisurely cruise to close proximity, and would thus have enough energy to follow him down a mostly straight dive. 10:30 If it's on a long program, it'll keep doing this even after reaching cover. The whole thing could come down to him having his dispensers on auto. If so, I suspect the track file would show this. 13:43 You could already have a maddog near his position at this point. That would eliminate the race to fire first - where altitude, and perhaps also raw missile speed, gave you a handicap. Even if he would be first though, it would be a mutual kill.

he knows hes fighting a hornet, thats in early access and has no TWS mode. therefore he will get a missile launch indication the second I fire cuz I only have STT.

@@GrowlingSidewinder Except for aim7 guidance, it does not make sense to me that the STT emission pattern changes upon launching a missile. So unless somebody in the know can confirm it does irl, I'd consider it a bug. Which could get fixed, and we already know ED is not always accurate in their changelogs.

Good kill! And excellent tactics. I see why the Aim-120 is favored by pilots. You should do this more often.

I would have gone inverted and down towards the ground for terrain masking as the mirage shot his missiles. It's not very likely for him to dodge that amraam, but if he did, you would need to find some cover. Good fight tho, nice seeing both sides of the fight.

in hindsight thats what I should have done.

Another great video GS, but i want you to drop your AMRAAMs for M model Sparrows (and your AIM-9Xs for Ls...) in the next one. Also the loadout of 10 (!) AMRAAMs is an overkill and not realistic in any case. I would have never agreed to fly against you knowing that you carry half the carrier's arsenal of active AAMs. Kudos to Antos who not only did agree but almost splash you in the process :) . But to be honest, If Antos did not have the terrain masking option, this video would be maybe 4 minutes long. Try to setup more even engagements that will increase the viewers interest. For the next fight i suggest both flying over sea or land and carry similar armament, like 2 SARH (or 4 in the case of the Hornet, which is realistic), a drop tank and 2 heat seekers. I would like to see pilot vs pilot, not weapon vs weapon, if you know what I am saying :). Sierra Hotel. PS: I have no clue if DCS allows you to select anything else than AIM-120s and AIM-9Xs for your Hornet.

Valid points regarding the loadout, but on the flipside, GS was naked over the water vs. OPFOR being able to hide with terrain. Great flying by both; that Antos was able to get it to 50/50 at the end was impressive. Personally, I say give each pilot 2x Fox2 and guns and have at.

Great video demonstrating “Know thy enemy”. You knew what he was flying (eg. missiles and their engagement envelopes) and the fact that he would most likely ‘honour the threat’ (eg. firing an Amraam beyond its effective kill range). You were the cat to his very small mouse 😉

That is a missile comparision. Doesn't matter if it is a Eurofighter, F-15, F-18, F-16, F-35... the AMRAAM, without another competing Fox-3 (or jamming pod), will win. Good video.

Fabio in real situations there is no one against one fight. The aircraft with the shorter range missile may break sideways long before the aircraft with the long-range missiles comes in firing range and playing defensive may give the oportunity to his wingman to attack the enemy fighter. Tight turning and acceleration in the 3-to-9 direction as to the enemy and smart tailored tactics especially when the aircraft with the short-range missile have numerical advantage may work surprisingly against the expectation of the victory of the long-range opponent.

F 18 with 10 missiles (fox 1-2 and 3) VS a Mirage with 4 missiles (Fox 1 and 2, and not the best one on DCS), the only chance for the Mirage is to hide in mountains, and to get the Merge. Then, he has a chance, because less heavy and better agility. A second round would be interesting.

Thanks again for the great content. I just started getting into DCS with the F/A-18C. It took me forever to figure out how to fire an AMRAAM until I watched your tutorials. Also, do you have a recommendation on which VR headset to go with?

I use the mirage, I haven't found a way to change the counter measures programming, maybe i'm just not looking enough, the default mode I think is 2-5 chaff and 2 flares per one push of the button

You got any tips on keeping situational awareness in a fight with multiple targets? I'm definetely not good enough to be playing multiplayer but even in the FC3 campaigns against AI I have troubles staying on top of the situation once the first stage of the fight is over. That is I get the enemy groups on my radar, lock some up, fire when I'm close enough, then go defensive when they fire at me and then once we merge I just lose it completely. I'm all over the place frantically searching with radar, with my eyes but it usually comes down to me getting shot down by a heatseeker that I didn't spot because I didn't know where the enemy plane was.

if you merge, don't take ur eyes off the target, use ur rwr to get general cues on which direction to look, forget ur radar once ur that close, which to ACM modes. Ideally don't merge with more than 1 hostile target. unless ur aircraft is vastly superior you'll probably die.

Same here. I've been trying to beat a 2v1 against Mig-21's in my F18. I'll take the first out but I lose the 2nd. Most cases I'm taken out by an R-60 within a short couple of minutes trying to find him again. I've been studying Growling's videos to find a way to come out on top. And this is even having the AI Mig-21's as "Average". LOL

if you don't have situational awareness on him, pop a few random flares from time to time, assume hes firing on you if you can't see him.

If I could change 1 thing about the fight, it would be to start at a higher altitude to be able to look down into the mountains and also have gravity help my amraams increasing their range.

When the Mirage came over the hill, i expected him to shoot one semi radar, and one IR at you, in that order. Antos tried to do a "surprise madafaka" really hard, and almost got it.

the f18 is still in early access however its still very capable. with new updates always coming out in the pipelines. in my opinion its a much better module than the mirage as the f18 has more "capability" if you will. and also the fact that the mirage has no FOX3 active long range BVR missile.....thats a big turn off for me (if I had to pick between the 2) the mirage is still a great module, but beside the hornet it just doesnt do it for me.

correct me if im wrong but chaff is a countermeasure to radar guided missiles?

yeah deffs hard to tell, i mean i have made some long shots (that i thought were outside Rmax) with both the magic and the sidewinder. It would depend on the reaction of Growling Sidewinder i guess.

@@antoniekawa2678 still I wonder if you would load it up with magix, and focused on staying defensive to defeat the fox 3 until you were within range of your heat-seekers if that might not have been a better strategy. He still definitely has the bvr advantage, but the Mirage is a fortune fighter with plenty of e m of its own to help level the playing field

Hypothetical senario: Your F-18C w. same setup (10 AIM-120C + 2 AIM-9X + Cannon + 1 centerline tank) Vs. Mirage 2000-5 Mk.2 (6 MBDA MICA RF + 2 MBDA MICA IR + Cannon + 1 centerline tank) Looks like a closer match to me :)

ur right it is, but we don't have that version of the mirage in DCS right now unfortunately.

Wonderfull video, as usual, one question: as we saw in one of your last videos: you can give a huge range to the aamram going at 50k feet. Why did you choose to stay low this time fighting the mirage? Wouldn't it be easier if you were very high for the range and also to make it harder for the mirage to hide in the mountains? Thanks!

As a huge fan of the F/A-18 and it being pretty much the only plane I fly now in DCS, the Mirage 2000 looks amazing, and I hope to get it eventually. But I wanna fly my F-14 I paid $80 for before I buy any more modules lol! Good kill, devil dog!

hi there, I recoomend anything flaming cliffs if youre just starting out, f15, mig29, su27 or su33. these are a more simplified arcade like aircraft in terms of control and its a great place to start in DCS.
