My multiplayer guide to the DCS Mirage F1CE. This video is focused on how to employ the Mirage F1 CE in a multiplayer PVP setting with a focus on A2A. DCS Modules have a lot of things modeled but not all of them are equally useful in a multiplayer setting. This channel focuses on combat flight simulators like DCS World and IL-2 Great Battles. Eagle Dynamics has made it easier than ever to learn DCS because the game is technically free. The game has the F-15, F-16, Su-27, Mig-29, Mig-21, Mig-19, Mig-15, F-86 Sabre, Jf-17, Mirage 2000, F-18 Hornet and F-14 Tomcat. There are soon other modules coming such as the Mig-23 and F-4. Lastly, there are helicopters like the Mi-24 Hind and AH-64 Apache.

This module is a neat one and I am enjoying it. I was hoping to get this video out sooner but I had my opinions shifting over time as I flew it more and more. I feel pretty confident that hit and run tactics are going to be the move and any sort of extended dogfight will leave you too exposed to reliably realize positive results. How are you all liking it so far?

I've not had much of a chance to fly it online yet. The F1 team is always full so I fly against it and I have really enjoyed fighting it with the Farmer. The Farmer roll rate is so strong and the F1 gets so squirrely trying to scissor with the MiGs. Putting the older missiles on was a great move. Thank you for doing that.

I really want to try out multiplayer with this jet but I want to be able to do a bit better in it in solo practice. I've been hitting my head over trying to take on the Mig-19 on the south atlantic instant action mission. I'm goin to keep trying and will keep your tips in mind. I keep failing at it thus far. Have you got any extra pointer on how to win a dogfight versus the Mig-19?

I was flying the F5 you merged with at 2:47! Got waaaaaay too slow to rate fight you, was basically treading water until that Viggen came to bail me out. Good fight and great video.

My impresison so far is that the Mirage F1 is to the cold war setting what the FW-190 is to a WWII setting. A very fast hit and run killer that gets bogged down if overcommitted in a dogfight. My best success with it honestly has just been to imagine it as a FW-190

I am kind of on the same page. I have been hearing from some people who are experimenting taking it to super low speeds and trying to get tricky with it but I haven't had the time yet to test

Flying the F1 in dogfights is definitely a challenge. The 530F gives it some serious lethality nonetheless, if you manage the radar and take care of the missile properly.
I absolutely love the F1. It s a great airframe.
Hey Enigma, you may already know this but your TEL modes will only work if you enter TEL, then BPZ. If you enter BPZ first, the radar will not actively search ( shown by the lack of noise on the scope) and you will have to enter HA scan again to get the radar to sweep
Rhyno hit me with the suggestion of 350kts and 17 AoA for sustained at low alt. I haven't tested it super carefully to confirm that's best rate, but it does feel like it's getting results. 400-450 and green band works better at higher altitudes (>15,000ft) I think, the AoA indexer colour code is based on approach/landing but up high the less you're pulling the better, so it lines up well. I don't think the F1 is ever really going to be much of a dogfighter, it can be a challenging opponent in good hands and once it's light on fuel but the F-5 and 21 both still hold more cards in that arena. I'd agree that slashing attacks with missiles are the go. I've had the most success doing that and the aircraft is well suited to it (besides lack of IFF interrogator). The cluttered cockpit is so claustrophobic that in chaotic environments, your SA goes immediately to the bin and the radar isn't going to help you fix that, while in the F-5 and even the 21, your forwards vision is so much better that it's easier to keep track of your target and also figure out what's going on around you. It also makes it ridiculously easy to line up one-timers with the guns, while in the F1 you've got these fuckoff jailbars blocking your view and the boresight reference for the guns is a tiny orange hashmark placed awkwardly high on the HUD. I'd also add that the radar close combat modes are nice when they work, but the radar overall is fiddly and kind of unreliable even in its probably-overperforming early access state. Switching back to the F-5 after a few sorties in the F1 is like a revelation, a weight off your shoulders. The radar might not be as good on paper, but it's insanely quick and easy to ID and lock up contacts and put the nose on them - the F1 intercept cue is pretty nice for attacking unaware targets or bombers, but near enough useless in a turning fight, where the F-5 and MiG-21 system of "put the thing on the thing" means you can immediately put a locked contact in your gunsight just by lining them up in the middle of the scope. The intercept cue also doesn't work in the cannon/heater fast select mode and so if the orange box isn't already in your HUD area you're lost. It's hard to actually describe just how superior the situational awareness of the F-5 is compared to this jet, especially since most people sleep so hard on the F-5's radar.
I think the F1 has a poor reputation right now, but mostly because people don't know how to use it (and I'm one of those, but I love it) I think this kind of video will be greatly helpful to improve the reputation of the F1 and help people to get a better understanding of how to use this amazing bird.

I think it has a poor reputation because the community did what it always does, they hyped themselves into oblivion without actually researching the aircraft. A certain someone's... *embellishment* of the F1's combat record in Angola and Iraq-Iran certainly didn't help, that's for sure. The 23 is going to eat this thing alive, and the fact the SAAF generally tried to avoid engaging them except with a numerically superior ambush (and still never managed to shoot one down) should tell you all you need to know there. I'd been telling people for months leading up to release that the jet would probably only have one or two tricks up its sleeve, but otherwise not be much of an improvement over the F-5... I was surprised to find it was actually a *downgrade* from the F-5 in some respects, situational awareness being the big one. Unlike the other Cold War jets we have (including the 21, contrary to popular opinion), the F1 actually *was* designed as an interceptor and strike aircraft from the get-go, and it shows. It's reasonably fast once you get over its sluggish initial acceleration, it turns acceptably but not very well, it has a lot of fuel, but more critically for the interceptor role its onboard systems are all heavily optimised towards a deliberate rendezvous with, and possibly shootdown of, a relatively non-reactive intruder. It's kind of like a missing link between the fighters pressed into the role like 21 or F-104, and the big boys like Su-15 or F-106. Quite a cool plane, and that setup makes it really great for hit-and-run 530 shanks.
Haven't flown the F1 is ages, fired it up last night and there's this very annoying clicking/ticking in the cockpit now, sounds like it's linked to engine rpm/fuel flow.

Great vid thanks! You mentioned when to retract the combat flaps, at which point/in which situations do you recommend deploying them? Do you also ever deploy regular flaps (half way?) when you find yourself slowing down in an unfortunate turn fight? In the mig21 video you had an awesome 'in addition to auto-start start-up guide' - found that very useful! For the mirage after two flights figured out in addition to auto start you'll need to: radar on, countermeasures on, master arm cover off, selective jettison down and cover off (ready to drop center tank), radar on (3 way forward), radio to 'P' to use the radio channel presets. I probably missed something. Cheers!

Combat flaps deploy the flaps to the same level as half way regular flaps. However regular flaps stay down and wont auto retract if you get too fast so you can damage them. Combat flaps will retract automatically above 300 knots if I remember correctly. The thing is sometimes you may want to go into straight level flight and start accelerating when at say 250 knots, if you don't retract your combat flaps yourself they will remain down until you surpass 300 knots, so until then your plane is being extra draggy harming acceleration performance.
Bought this last night, kind of on a whim… first thoughts are the cockpit looks a bit too saturated for my tastes, but I absolutely adore the analogue AoA indicator
Great vid. One minor thing TL mode only works at 7km so you can only lock with it currently at just under 4nm. Nice Tomcat kill BTW

seems like the only thing letting the F1 contend with the blufor jets is the 530EMs, Since the removal of them on the server it is seriously daunting to attempt anything but ground pounding. Bring back the fox 1s, Its ridiculous that the tomcats have the phoenix missile and F1s don't have anything to fight even an f5 with considering the necessity of boom and zoom tactics. every fight consists of 1-3 turns and either running away or death.

I can't see enemies visually in DCS World, how should I set up the graphics, or how should I train?

Really interested how this will match up vs the MiG-23 when that gets released eventually (2023?..) as both are roughly comparable in date of entry, size and mission(s).

The 23 variant we are getting (MLA) would outperform it in most combat performance regimes (speed, climb, acceleration, sustained turn). The only thing the F1 might have an advantage is in instantaneous turn capability, though at the cost of spending all of it's energy so if it goes for it it kinda has to make sure it will get the gun / missile shot there. An early MiG-23M or MF would be closer at least in regards to sustained turn capability.

@@Lemard77 the 23 will be a beast when it comes out. Definitely will be a terror to see online. The F-4 and MiG-23 will both dominate in BVR, but the 23MLA will also be a dogfighting weapon in good hands.
Are the F1s still restricted to an amount of points? And if so are you planning on making the "free" anytime soon? I only own the F1 so I cant fly on the server at this time.

They stopped being restricted a while ago.
It seems on the server one has no survivability chance at all anymore without using VR (or TrackIR. I only have VR). Will test current Caucasus VR performance tomorrow, very curious. I'll have to use my VR graphics preset with low trees, because DCS is still soooo harsh on my Ryzen 5 3600X... And I don't wanna upgrade to Ryzen 5600 yet... -.-

I don't fly in VR but I fly with TIR. I would say at the least TIR is a requirement.

I think it can be done by the right person with the right playstyle (not me, I've had TIR for 12 years and can't help myself from getting into dogfights). Lining up slashing attacks and generally playing keep-away rather than getting tangled up in sustained turns or slow ballets would be OK, I would say.

How do the ranges of the super 530 missiles and sidewinders on the mirage compare to the available missiles on the F-5 on your server?

The sidewinders are not anything special so they slipped right now, we limited the JULI because we typically try to shy away from all aspect. The R530EM is in.

AIM-9J has similar or slightly better reach versus AIM-9B but turns much better (22G versus 10). It's outranged by the 9P and 9P5 (debatable if it should be) and turns slightly better (which it shouldn't - the 9P/P5 are underperforming at 16G). Magic I turns about as well as an R-60 with similar range, but hits as hard as a Sidewinder. The 530 is an absolute comical torpedo which has pretty miserable range in a tail chase against a cospeed or especially faster target, but is pretty cracked head-on where it'll reach out to a decent degree and can typically make hits that the R-3R and maybe even AIM-9P5 would miss. It flies like a Sparrow, it makes really gentle, lazy turns while its sustainer motor is burning, so it arrives with a shit ton of energy and can still pull all 16 of its available G where a Sidewinder or R-3R would've already run itself out of steam.

Does Overlord have any way of telling you what the target you have radar locked at distance is or do you just do a bogey dope call and if the range to the target matches the range on your radar with no other radar contacts overlord didn't call out you have basically IFF'd the target?

I would guess -B and -E for sure. But -M is way post Cold War glass cockpit modernisation.

I try not to comment too much until things have release dates. If you look at the current planes and then look at future ones coming then the ones that slip right in should be fine.
I hope mig 23 doesn’t take forever to be done and also would be fun to have a mig 25

you should turn on the neutral dot setting. It's incredibly difficult to find targets further than 2 NM.

@@trevorstudent4625 It's a labels setting that allows you to see targets (planes and ground units) at more realistic distances. This is very useful for ones using VR. It overimposes a tiny grey dot over the respective target.

@@redpilot6388 What are you talking about? I can see targets in vr further than 20nm away. Oculus quest 2 5408x2736 resolution. VR users definitely do not need such a setting. Only issue is IFF and seeing the aspect of the bogey.

I wish Phantoms radar will work like this one. Locking everything easily. As a game , Phantom is just useless crap due Heatlbur's realism standarts or whatever. Cant lock anything just front of my nose in Heatblur modules. (except Tomcats ACM modes)
What's the difference between the Tel and Bpz close combat modes?

I had a problem trying to unwind the manual as well which took time for this video to come out. Some things were a bit muddied for me when trying to read it.
It's a very cool plane but I feel like it's not meant to be a dogfighter, in my own experience at least I always lost while dogfighting with this bird.
The easiest one to shot down in my MiG21. Tiger 2 is better in dogfight.

The engine is underpowered and it does not do well at lower speeds. Best tactic is hit and run with the radar guides missles at high speed.

Honestly no. It has slightly more power than the F-5 and either slightly less, or a lot less, than the MiG-21 (depending on altitude). Its sustained turn rate at low fuel and with only wingtip missiles is okay but nothing to write home about. It has reasonable instantaneous turn but again not amazing, and its high AoA abilities are offset by the fact that to use them, you burn all your speed and become a very easy target. It also has quite vicious adverse yaw which only gets worse once you fire a missile off one wing, so it'll want to tumble or spin if you yank the stick around. The worst part though is the cockpit - the forwards visibility is absolutely horrific, worst in the server's planeset by far, and the gunsight is not particularly good and the boresight reference mark is very hard to see. None of this is to say it can't dogfight - just that the other planes in the server can all dogfight better, and have a much easier time doing it as well.
