DCS MiG-21 Bis Cold War Tips and Tricks

Hi everyone! With the cold war plane set gaining some more popularity, I finally got around to posting a video I've been wanting to do for quite a while.
These are just my own opinions, and things that work for me in game, but there is of course more then one way to fly the MiG-21Bis.
Enjoy!!

    The engine restart switch should be turned off instantly once your engine is relit. It uses a reserve O2 tank (you can see its pressure to your back left on the wall) and each relight only uses a little bit of it. That said it will keep dumping that o2 tank if you do not turn that switch back off. Hope that helps.

    I personally prefer the single sets as well, but I love using the r3r and just adjust to the odd weights when firing them. My go to has been 2X r60 and 2X r3r and 1 center tank (size depending on mission), using the radar missiles seems to take a lot of people by surprise. When I use the radar missiles I use radar to get visual, then shut down close in get radar back and lock them firing the missile as soon as possible.

    Just to let you know with the last update on Dec 29, 2021 there is a bug that if you keep the flaps down when you go past 450kph you will after several seconds start to loose hydraulic pressure and a orange warning light will come on. After several more seconds you if you don't retract the flaps you'll permanently loose all hydraulic pressure and you will loose all pitch and roll authority. It's still useful when you go below 450kph but now you need to be aware to retract them until the bug is fixed. Hopefully when the engine sound bug is also fixed on the MiG 21.

    Yeah i'll admit i've kinda reassessed that. The MiG-21 probably has the best gun IMO in cold war. It's a nice straight laser cutter that hits aircraft hard. I feel the F-5 is better to throw volume of fire to help scare and shape how you opponent fights, but you definitely need more time on target to actually bring something down. The F1's 30mm is great, but it's harder to point it where you want it in a instant.

    Different sources offer different opinions. US red eagle pilots also commented on the MiGs 21 good low-speed characteristics. For the video, my comments are strictly how the MiG performs in game. Having used both the F-5 and the MiG-21, you want to stay fast in the F-5, and you want to bring it slow with the MiG-21. With the 21 using takefoff flaps and E-burner you can turn the MiG 21 into a floating kite. You can bring it slow, and then use the crazy thrust to keep you airborn. The F-5 can do some high alpha turns, drops under 300 knots and is then screwed, it just can't build up the speed again. So it either straightens it's nose and gets gunned. Or it tries to stay with the MiG in the slow scissor turns and falls into the ground.

    @@crazygmanssimstuff Interesting stuff. The Soviets admit the Mig-21 was never meant to be a slow turn fighter. Where as the F-5 was developed under the light weight fighter program. It was the Soviet military that said during dogfight testing the F-5 would always end up on the Mig-21s 6. It's a fun read. "After determining the basic specification we decided to set up for a mock air-to-air combat with MiG-21bis. I would fight on my “native” MiG-21, and Nikolay Stogov - on F-5. The close air combat started head-on in equal positions. Every flight ended with the same result: MiG-21 lost, although he had much higher thrust-to-weight ratio. I laid myself out just to keep the initial position. I took the most out of the aircraft, took all he could give, but the targeting angle grew steadily and in a few minutes the “bandit” was on my tail. Only tactics could save me. What I was stricken by the most is that the result of the mock fights took not only the generals by surprise (one could explain this somehow), but also the military research departments of the Air Force and even the aviation engineers. They would review the data records for thousand times, ask the pilots, especially me. Frankly, I was somewhat confused as well, but when I tried the F-5, I realized that it was not an ordinary one."

    @icin4d I'm familiar with the article and have read it before. Again, as mentioned, it's one source, and based on interviews of American F-5E opposing force pilots, it seems to differ from their opinions as they consider the F-5E somewhat lack luster. Good for a few initial hard turns, which you can surprise inexperienced pilots with, but that is all. As mentioned, i'm just discribing how they compare in game, and if you can get a F-5 that can beat me in the Bis with similar fuel stats at low speeds, i'll change my tune. Whether you think the model needs tweeking, you'll have to reach out to Magnitude and ED for that.

    @@crazygmanssimstuff US fighter pilots primarily flew the MiG-21F-13 variants that were underpowered but better balanced and more agile than later MiG-21s. The MiG-21bis we have in the game had a bad CG caused by location and weight of the expanded fuel tank as well as increased wing loading reducing turn performance. The Soviet tests were probably carried out with the MiG-21SM or MiG-21bis, which would have energy advantages over the F-5E. The F-5E's maneuver flaps were very effective at low speed. DCS flight modeling for the F-5E seems to undermodel performance (it flies more like the much more underpowered F-5A) while the DCS MiG-21bis can keep up with teen fighters in low speed dogfights. US fighter pilots exploited low-speed/high-AoA behavior that the Soviet manuals did not even admit was possible. But such maneuvers were only good for instantaneous snap shots not sustained turns. The Soviet tests correctly found that an F-5E with maneuvering flaps was a much better sustained turn fighters when speeds got low enough to use them. So, the experience in DCS where F-5Es should stay fast and MiG-21s should slow down in an F-5E vs MiG-21bis fight is exactly the opposite of reality.

  • @streakeagle

    @streakeagle

    Жыл бұрын

    @@crazygmanssimstuff Another real-world data point to consider: hard wing F-4B/F-4C aircraft were energy fighters vs MiG-21F-13 in Vietnam. By 1972, when the MiG-21MF was in service, the MiG-21MF became the energy fighter while the slatted F-4E became the turn fighter. The roles were reversed as both aircraft had been changed based on the experience earlier in the war. MiG-21MF had the bigger better engine to provide more specific excess power for speed, acceleration, and climb performance at the cost of wing loading/reduced turn performance. Also went from 2 to 4 missiles for more weight and drag. The slatted F-4E gave up drag and weight to get high-AoA stability with much improved sustained and instantaneous turn performance. Previously, F-4s fighting MiG-21F-13s could go low and fast to easily escape. MiG-21MF were seen to actually catch up because the low altitude power deficiency of the MiG-21F-13 had been corrected with the new engine, implying a specific excess power advantage.

    So some of engimas dogfight videos are good to follow, as it will go over various tactics. Fortunately the cold war aircaft are all similar enough that effective tactics translates well over multiple airframes. In the end though any sort or multiplayer playing I find really justs gets better with going on and finding out what works and what doesn't, an important tip that I give people is try to have good expectations. Your goal as a fighter is to go up and kill "1" aircraft and make it home, anything else is just extra. Most of my sorties still rarely go over 2-3 kills. The other thing is make sure you have you aircraft setup well. While it might be tempting to carry 6 missiles in the MiG-21 you ability to effectively use them are greatly reduced due to the penalties you put on the airframe and i find having less missiles makes you more likely to take better more effective shots. Tips I have are keep a reasonable loadout, don't dogfight untill you've burned off some internal fuel (hit and run and going after targets that are not aware of you is fine before that). There are also times to be fast and there are times to be slow. Coming in full tilt trying to save a buddy, often will result in overshooting, it's much better to take 5 or 6 seconds more to properly slow down and get in a good attack position. Learn to know when you need to have full burner, and when you need to slow down. Watch videos of cold war fights and take notices of things, especially listening, for when the plane is throttling up or down, or when you hear airbrakes being deployed.

Fighting is fun in this thing, feels like actually hurling a tin can through the sky. The main thing I need to learn/excel in is fuel mgmt. I think I'm a bit too liberal with the throttle and always run out of fuel super fast.

  • @crazygmanssimstuff

    @crazygmanssimstuff

    5 ай бұрын

    @RYVENANT i mean one way to conserve fuel is to get to around 8000 meters and cruise up there. Once you start fighting though you can't really conserve fuel, but try to exit any fight once you get to around 600L (900L if you need to use burner to get away. Once you safe climb to higher alt and then sip fuel by pulling back to 90% or even 80% RPM. This is also the reason why I don't suggest you take a ton of missiles. Thee MiG-21Bis is designed really for 1 serious engagement. Once you get more experience and can get better at clearing enemies fast, you can move to multiple engagements.

    1:52 Actually you're wrong. DCS MiG-21bis (and the real one) has AFB 1, AFB 2, and EPR mode. AFB 2 you can set manually as you described and it's unlimited. (~7000KG thrust available), but there's thrird mode. EPR. It's special it's turned on automatically under such conditions: - AFB 2 turned on - Altitude below ~4000m - Speed about ~1 Ma (in my personal experience it works from about 900IAS) it produces 9900KG Thrust. And in these mode MiG-21bis with 2x R-60(M) has thrust to waight ratio ~1,2 : 1 (or better depending on fuel state). I strongly recomend never allow a speed to drop below 750 IAS in combat.

  • @crazygmanssimstuff

    @crazygmanssimstuff

    2 жыл бұрын

    I'm afraid you are somewhat incorrect. In order to get the 7100kg of thrust the second reheat switch must also be activated but this is not unlimited and it turns off above 4000m at any speed. You can see that the system activates when you flip the switch and are below 4000m and put the throttle full ahead as the emergency afterburner green light will come on even when not near Mach 1 and your engine rpm and temperature will increase. All of this can be seen in the video where I discuss it at the 1:43 mark, and my speed is between 0.8 and 0.9 Mach ( I am above 900 IAS in the video but I've tested it under and the RPM and temperature still increase when well under 900 IAS), and in page 36 of the manual the maximum continuous run at second reheat is 3 min with a 30 second break regardless if it is in the 7100kg thrust regime mode or the 9900kg as the heat from both modes is still potentially exceeding the safe limits of the turbine. From doing now many many pvp dogfights with the MiG 21, IMO doing a sustained rate fight at the speed you suggested I don't recommend where opponents like the F-5 will actually out rate you. Instead it is better to threaten them with your nose position and bring the fight slow under 500ias. In this envelope the MiGs power to rate ratio allows you to get slow and turn inside the F-5 who either has to straighten out or eventually crash into the ground. in fact when I'm flying the F-5 vs the MiG 21 I try to keep the speed up so that I can out rate the MiG 21Bis. However as I did mention getting slow with the MiG 21 has disadvantages if you need to exit after a fight, but unfortunately even at 750IAS the MiG 21 can not exit a fight fast enough to escape a AIM-9P or AIM-9P5 fired from the F-5 if you try to disengage. So if you are knife fighting a F-5 your options are limited in that area, and if fighting a A-10 you have to slow down well below 750 IAS if you want to pull lead for a gun kill on a A-10

    Looking over stuff I am actually curious as some of the wording is odd. In the manual it says 9900kg (when near the ground) at Mach 1 on page 28, and says that is does 7100kg when second reheat is on in the same paragraph when not in those conditions. The second reheat (emergency afterburner light) comes on only when below 4000m though, and the light comes on and the RPM and temperature increase regardless of you IAS. If "near the ground" is anything below 4000m the only way that I can think that works with the wording is that it's 7100kg when below 4000m and regardless of speed with second reheat (emergency burner on) and then when at around mach 1 near the ground it bumps it up automatically to 9900kg, but there is no indication either with a light or with additional rpm or temperature increase that I have ever noticed The other option is that you do get the 9900kg of thrust under 4000m when the light comes on but that it doesn't seem to matter what your IAS is and that this is the EPR mode as you described, and then when your above 4000m and have the second reheat switch turned on the light doesn't come on and you get the 7100kg, but this doesn't make sense as air speed doesn't seem to matter in that case.

    @@crazygmanssimstuff One more time - There's 1-st and 2-nd reheat as you described, but there's 3-rd reheat called EPR. It turns on automatically (!) when 2-nd reheat is on, you're below 4000m and you're flying about 1Ma. Check by dev's if you don't belive me. I got these from a first hand source. my point is... most of you guys use MiG-21 wrong. It's not made to be low alt turn-fighter :-) PS... Did you never wonder why MiG 21 accelerates up to 900KIAS (below 1000m) quite unwillingly, and after that you can't stop him accelerating? @@krzysztofgawe1089 Ok so it is as I thought (also checked with a source). However the 7100kg thrust regime is still time limited where you said it was unlimited, (allthough neither regime seems to actually damage or degrad the engine in game if used for more then 3 minutes) I was aware of the difference of thrust at speed, even still the 7100 thrust is still a nice boost so the point in the video still applies and the fact that it is there for improved thrust to weight in a dogfight is listed in different sources. I understand what the MiG 21Bis's best sustained turn rate is at but in both cold war servers the fight happens 90% of the time near the ground, and as I previously said your opponents on the cold war servers when they are at similar or better weight ratios, will outrate you that those higher speeds. I have seen this now hundreds of times in game and have practiced it with other players in single sessions. In fact one of the largest problems I see players doing is staying fast and overshooting, espessially when fighting slower opponents like the A-10. If armed with R-60m then doing hit and run tactics and keeping your speed up will work. However with guns and rear aspect heaters you are going to need to slow down to use them effectively. I'm not saying that the MiG-21 is an ideal low speed turn fighter, but against the F-5 Viggen and A-10 it is if you incorporate the vertical and don't do a horizontal turn fight it will beat those opponents in those regimes, but if you keep your speed above 750ias in the MiG-21bis you will struggle against those opponents. This is just what I've experienced from now flying countless hours flying the MiG-21Bis since I bought it in 2018, and have been doing PVP in it against a wide range of opponents for the last 4 years.

  • @crazygmanssimstuff

    @@krzysztofgawe1089 Also did more testing and yeah you don't get the full 9900kg if your just under 4000m. the closer to the ground you are the more thrust you get and the difference at 3000m vs 2000m vs 1000m vs 500m is considerable if you just do a speed test, and time how long it takes to get up to 1200 IAS at those different altitudes. So it is as the manual says, the 2nd reheat is the emergency afterburner, there is no third mode. It just works more efficiently the higher your speed is and the lower your alt is. I invite you to test it yourself.

    Enigmas cold war server is very popular right now. Alpenwolf is busy during the day in Europe. The last patch put out a couple of bugs for the MiG 21 and MiG 19s but they will be fixed soon. Even with then there were over 40 players online yesterday.

    @@vascoiraola5209 maybe wait till the next open beta patch, the last one created two bugs. One with engine sound that is annoying. And another with running out of hydraulic pressure if you leave the flaps down past 450kph for a decent time. Both aren't game Breaking, but are annoying right now, but should be fixed quickly. After that the MiG 21 is very formidable in the cold war setting.

    You don't fly. You're just a video gamer. So don't use phraseology that suggests your pilot. You're not. I am. We don't appreciate people who didn't put in the work to become Pilots that try to suggest that they are. I'm sure you're a better video gamer than I am though

    Instead of saying don't use it. Why not encourage him to use it correctly. He may not be a pilot but he may consider being one. Being a pilot can be a profession and a a hobby so I don't quite understand your elitist gate keeping attitude. Plus it's a game about aviation. Aviation terms and pilot phrases will make the most sense in a game like this. It's not like soldiers get passed at office workers spending a weekend playing air soft. Lighten your heart a bit.
