The most important is the landing weight. In Mig-21 it means everything. Follow the flight manual in which are written the maximal landing weights (fuel ammount) for different loadout. Also there is big difference when you land without BLC system. For that you need aircraft with no payload and less than 400 L of fuel.

I know doing things by the book isn't necessarily fun for most people, but there are a few points I want to raise since not knowing about them can potentially get you into trouble in the MiG. Mostly it boils down to the MiG is touchy about speed due to its boundary layer controls (greatly increases lift with landing flaps down but only works below 360 kph) and max touchdown speed (runs the risk of blowing tires if you're too fast, but I don't think that's modeled in DCS). - Weight: Try to land light. The official figure is 700 liters of fuel with no stores or 400 liters with around 200 KG (two missiles, two empty UB-16s, or similar loads) with overweight landings allowed up to 7300 KG (800 L of fuel and 2 loaded UB-16s or similar). Personally I like to time it so I'm landing right around when the first "tank group empty" light kicks on since that should be right around 700 L. - Speed: As mentioned above, the boundary layer control only works at 360 kph and below, with landing flaps extended, and with sufficient power (around 50-55% RPM or so, which conveniently is also about the point your NOZZLE OPEN light comes on. That in mind, your final approach speed should be a bit under this (say, 340-360). I like to reach that speed range and drop landing flaps between the outer and inner beacons. If you cross the inner beacon at 340 kph and 80-100 meters, you are pretty much right on the money. - Flare/touchdown: When you get close to the ground (say under 20 meters) pull back power (don't dip below that 50-55% RPM mark or your BLC will shut off and you'll drop like a rock!) and flare. You should look to reach zero rate of descent just off the deck (about 1 meter if you go by the book), then as the jet slows down it should settle down more or less on its own and touch down around 260 kph. Give it a little extra back stick at the moment of touchdown so the nose comes down smoothly instead of pounding into the pavement, then hit the chute and brake as needed. You won't be able to see the runway during the flare, so look out the side and use the edge of the runway to judge if you're tracking straight or veering off to one side. - Go-around: When you decide to go around, go to full power but keep it at or under 350 kph. Gear up once you have a positive rate of climb and pitch to maintain that 350 kph. Once you're nice and high (150 meters), then you can speed up and retract flaps. Again, this is all to keep the BLC working until you're at a safe altitude. If you exceed 360 kph and the BLC shuts off while you're still low your rate of climb will suffer and you're liable to whack into the ground or a building, tree, etc. Overall AoA works fine to manage speed at the right weight, but if you're flying the AoA and you're overweight you'll wind up over the BLC cutoff speed which can cause problems for you as you try to maintain glideslope and/or slow down. Just remember to stay light, stay below 360 kph once the landing flaps come out, and don't cut the throttle so much that the NOZZLE OPEN light comes on until you're on the ground.

This comment is gold. The Mig21 has a very peculiar way to land. Most of the other jet you can just land them by eye judgment but the 21 really forces you to go against your instincts. I will try with this parameters tomorrow

Great post! For my current skill / experience level in DCS it's not so much that going by the book isn't necessarily fun... it's just not necessarily possible. If the gear doesn't collapse and nothing catches fire, it's a good landing for this pilot... Although I am slowly getting better with practice.

Probably my favorite module in the game.

Just learning the 21 and these are great. Loving this plane. Thanks for the effort.

Just keep it below 1.5t of fuel when going for landing. And use takeoff flaps instead of landing ones, so you can still use AB if needed.

You don’t need thag stuff. Just use the afterburner detent and you can take back off in full flaps, and while going full mil power. Even over 1.5t of fuel. If I can take off in the mig21 at full fuel and with ASO2 pod and 2 r60 and 2 r3R in full mill, then I can surely take off again but even faster with no weapons (or with weapons) and with 1.5T of fuel.

The MiG 21 is one of my favorite aircraft. Thanks for this tutorial. I was finding myself in a similar scenario. Too slow & dropping like a rock.

It would be handy to see the control input overlay (right crtl + enter) during these tutorial so we can see exactly where your throttle and stick inputs are at. Otherwise great video, definitely was helpful.

New subscriber here, ex army (worked as a tech on apaches), guessing that delta wing has high wing loading hence the high landing speed

I awlays land on take off flaps only as you have the burner avail at all times, and you still gliding nice and steady at 400kph, and than just settle over the runway , back to idle and airbrake out.

Legit about the same as landing an ICBM in my experience 😂

Great vid. Shouldn't you also neutralize gear handle on the gear down action?

Yes, one definitely should do so. Otherwise main hydro pressure will gradually drop. MiG-21 landing, in general, is all bout hydraulics, after all )

It would help if you told us what to press on the keyboard.

Hey TP, what map is that runway on please? I know I've seen it but can't remember where. Looks like a great mission building area. Like the series by the way, many people are put off by the Mig-21 but it's a good module I think.

Aerobraking in the Fishbed, although doable is difficult for newer players to the module and having never flown one in real life I couldn't possibly say how it's done "irl". The techniques shown in the video are for those who are struggling to get to grips with the tricky landing profile compared to other airframes in DCS.

TP...favor... just got the Oculus Quest 2 and having the hardest time getting it right. Kept getting CTD yesterday. Have the Oculus Tray Tool, followed your other vids on it. Can you do an updated tutorial on how to properly launch Oculus and DCS and in what proper order? I think that is what is messing me up

I’ve been to war twice, I’ve seen enough “real”. This works to help newer pilots get to grips with the process. If they then want to go and chase “realism” they can crack on.

@@kamraam1464 for the average joe who just got into dcs over the last 50% off sale, the learning curve is steep as it is for fc3 modules, and when people get into full fedility, they can easily get confused by the fact that "master arm" isn't the only switch you gotta flip to fire the weapons.. The online video tutorials are always designed to give the absolute noob a stable foundation about the systems and differences between different systems and aircrafts.. All the tutorials are designed for giving the newbie a running start on their module.. Then we have training courses that go into deep subsystems that have books and manuals to accompany it.. And when we finally get anywhere near to the realism bit after 2 years of eff-ing around and trying to learn the skill, we join a squadron and assist each other to attain that higher than usual level of expertise.. For me, personally, I thought mig 21 was probably the most useless fighter in dcs catalog that had heaters on it, but it was only after 2 years of working on it off and on, I got see the absolute power of this beast, dcs mig 21 bis is probably the fastest aircraft in dcs, (still useless Wrt it's missiles and modern missiles), this mod has tought me more about bfm and acm than any other aircraft could ever do.. And you cannot convoy that kind of knowledge in a training manual, let alone a tutorial video.. It takes time and persistence, and that is a humbling and rewarding experience..
