just small advice :) I´ve 600fh on Hind. When landing it's not like a standard light helicopter using flare, in the final phase of landing, from 150 ft you need to have already balanced performance, then you should just slightly pushing forward with cyclic and at the same time reducing the collective...still keep in mind 12 tons :)

Yeah that tail is a big one. I’m trying to balance my own experience with the Apache (slightly smaller) with this being in DCS. I imagine the real thing behaves a little differently than in game.

i would argue against reducing collective while setting up the landing configuration from the flare, but that's just a Hip experience speaking here. flare, reduce pitch to 5-8 degrees, manage the final slowdown and height witht collective (raising). What you suggest is killing our rookies in simulator sessions. (i only spent two years D-own and V-ront sitting on the bumper calling trees and wires).

This what I like about military pilots flying flight simulators. You see them having fun, goofing around doing crazy stuff. And then, when they start to do tutorials...it’s top notch 👍🏻

@@CasmoTV After I got out of the USAF, I went into programming including military and law-enforcement sim training. If you got a free trip to Afghanistan in the last 10 years, you probably went through one of mine. I worked with a lot of former pilots as SMEs and PMs on these projects. But it's feast or famine type of work.

ED already has people on the dev team who are actually pilots of soviet choppers. They could hire him for the upcoming apache though. :)

I find the hind very easy and straightforward to land. ED nailed this out of the park once again and she is surprisingly maneuverable and fast holy easily maintain 280km. What shocked me tho is the hind very easily maxed out its max takeoff weight which I was surprised. Anyway great video.

Yeah I also was surprised how quickly you exceed the weight considering its designed to carry troops as well. Makes me wonder how much fuel was in all the ones I've seen flying

and when you have your radioaltimeter set and slow down with wheels up, it even tells you to "drop wheels". cyclic braking during rolling landings is depreciated as you're risking a tail strike. there's some limit on aft cyclic, probably tighter than Hip's half cyclic travel backwards.

Very helpful, thanks! I hope you also do a guns/rockets tutorial for the Hind. I know several of them already exist, but they mostly just show how to configure the weapon systems. The actual gun run is usually just described as "put the crosshair on the target and fire". And I can do that more or less. But I'd very much be interested to learn how to properly execute a helo gun run from a flying technique perspective. What are typical flight parameters during approach? How to best line up a shot? Whats the proper procedure to make corrections and keep the crosshair on the target? etc.

the best landing tutorial I've seen so far! I knew VRS & "weathervane-ing" was gonna kick my butt but didn't know it translated to the Hind until I started flying it. Thanks to your tutorial, I did my first landing without breaking the wheels 👍👍

Thanks for the video :) I'd managed takeoffs now, kind of hovered a bit, and exploded every time that I tried landing. I think I'd tried a rolling landing when not on tarmac, and also probably descended too fast; I shall try to avoid it in the future :)

@@CasmoTV An idea of video for you since you prefer showing techniques over system functions. I looked everywhere to find a video explaining how an attack chopper like the Hind is used in an escort scenario. Escorting MI-8 transporting troups ... or a convoy. Would the Hind fly few miles in front to open the way, or would stay close? Really difficult to find good information about military escorting strategies. If you do have knowledge about this, it would be AWESOME.

Thanks! I wondered what you thought of the VRS being exaggerated. Ex Huey Crewdog here, with some stick time, don't remember pilots talking about it much, cept one time in a 8+ formation landing and some settling with power issues. The Huey feels like I remember for the most part but the whole VRS thing is too much I think. Also, loosing your rotors when overtemping the engine. I recall being torque limited most. This was 84-94 time period.

Yeah VRS is WAY too common in DCS.

Best tutorials on the helicopter DCS aviation on the internet by a country mile. Your videos have taken me from fixed wing rl and sims to rotary novice in four days. Prior to these I couldn’t get any helicopter off the ground let alone land. Light bulb went off the rest is practice, practice, practice. Great stuff thank you for taking the time to share, record and edit the content. Easiest sub ever.

Really enjoying the technical/tactical hind vids. Noting the metric/imperial difference between Russian and US helos, could you pls put some addendum text on-screen when you discuss parameters in imperial but the hind instruments are in metric (eg 300ft/m = 5m/s). Saves re-recording, but makes it much more relevant to those flying the hind.

Thanks Casmo, looking great. Like a true pro! That massive boot of right anti-torque as you transition to hover is still catching me out more often than not. It seems to lose tail rotor effectiveness quite easily.

I suspect there is a lot of torque in those big engines. Bringing in power early and gently will help.

Awesome video, I keep practicing spot landings but I find I’m suffering dynamic rollover on hitting the deck a lot of the time. Power settings, descent rate and forward speed all as per tutorial. Seems to happen when I’m neutralising controls which is done slowly and smoothly. Any ideas? Cheers.

Watching the pitch angle was key. Very unforgiving if you ease off the collective too much. Landings have been much better. Thanks again!

Came here to find out whether the vortex ring state is a little exaggerated in the DCS Hind or not. hm, the pilot here says it is, but maybe for the heavy and powerful Hind it isn't? Or is it?

Great lesson Casmo, is the VSI in the Hind in feet or meters? I do agree that entering VRS seems bit too easy in these Russian heli’s but I’ve never flown them or any heli that heavy.

It’s probably meters. I don’t think before I talk.

Any tips on the proper technique to correct drift? if I yaw into it it does correct the drift but now I'm no longer on the correct heading which in itself needs more corrections to get back to the original course if I try to correct it with cyclic sometimes the drift just seems to follow throughout the manoeuvre 🤷🏻‍♂️.. Maybe flying with some degree of drift is tolerable but coming from fixed wing it just feels odd to be crabbing all the time.

You will crab a lot in RW. the nose and your direction are not always the same so you just have to correct for your flight path heading.

Hello Casmo, really enjoying your videos,been watching them a lot lately as I'm preparing myself for the DCS AH64. When it comes to the DCS Mi-24 Hind however, I'm having real issues flying this thing precisely at anything but high speeds. At low speeds it's so nervous in flight, esp. in pitch and yaw, and it looks nothing like when you watch footage of the real thing (The Ka-50 is a piece of cake to fly precisely for me by comparison). However not being a rotorhead I can't say wether it's realistic or not that it is so twitchy. What's your impression Casmo?

@@CasmoTV I see, I guess the real thing requires a lot of finesse to fly then. I hope the Apache is more stable, it certainly looks like it when you watch the POV vids of it flying low level along narrow forest rivers.

I wouldn’t wait. Why pay full price later? Honestly this is a great starter cause it’s multi crew and the flight model is better overall than the Huey. IMO

I would get the Mi-8. From what I've flown it's a little bit more friendly when it comes to hover and entering VRS ring state and there are lots of similarities between the Mi-8 and Mi-24. Mi-8 is almost complete minus multicrew and minor details whereas the Mi-24 just came out into early access, but it does have multicrew. Up to you but I would get a Russian helo. They are the most fun and rewarding in my opinion. Don't start with the Ka-50 though, it's quite complicated.

I have all the Helos, if you want to learn the Hind just get the Hind. It is perfectly usuable in it's current state and like Casmo says it is on sale.

@@Johnny641 Thanks. I got it on the 2 week trial, playing around with joystick curves, can get it to within 5' of landing then it all goes pear-shaped. Will buy it and maybe trial the Mi-8 as well - there's some good training vids on that as well.

I think it’s great. VRS happens a little too easily like the hip, in my opinion but maybe they are like that in real life. Otherwise she’s very fun to fly and feels right.

@@CasmoTV I've heard that the MI-8 and MI-24 are pretty susceptible to VRS IRL. I don't know how true it is, I've never flown one.

You said power what do are you reffering to , collectIve or throttle power. Do you change the throttle power at all?

Watching your flying makes me feel so out of practice with helis, you make it look so easy to get the speed off and hit your point without over flying and going around. Anyways, compared to a real Apache, how does this one feel? I get the sense the hind just in general likes to maintain forward airspeed a lot more and is probably less agile, but I've never had a good Apache simulation, nor have I flown a real one, so I don't know what to expect in a couple months. I imagine the Apache will feel more similar to the KA-50, but with a conventional rotor design, giving it more directional agility at a hover than the KA-50.

Hind feels pretty good. I think Apache will have a similar feel. Shark is just funky.

@@CasmoTV Interesting, perhaps it's just a systems limitation that the Hind feels like it has to be flown like a FW, though it's growing on me.

Hi everyone. Not sure what I'm doing wrong but I see to have an electrical problem. Everything looks to be turned on when it should be but I get the VERT GYRO 1/2 FAIL lights flashing in the top left of the instrument panel, the ADI has a couple of flags on it and a bunch of indicators don't work, including the Rotor Pitch Angle Indicator. All of the switches on the RADIO NAVIGATION row are on and everything that should be is turned on on the AC and DC electrical panels I think. Any idea what's missing? Thanks.

Ah, think I found my problem. I hadn't realised that the TRANSFORMER switches on the AC Power panel are 3 position (and they were in the middle position, rather than up). If I start in the air and then move the switches to the middle position, I get the same problem.

I would use it for a long flight just to maintain heading but not when I’m maneuvering.

Maybe I have missed something, but my Hind spins out of control when I am close to the ground despite of my careful maneuvering and rudder pedals.

Yes, I am pulling it as gradually as possible.

maximum speed for touchdown when landing in fixed-wing manner is 80kmh and not more. you have NEVER use rotor air braking, except main brakes failure. and so on, and so on

Hi Cosmo. Thank you for many fantastic videos! You are showing us your way of flying the Hind - however it does not have a lot in common with real world Mi-24 procedures. Running landings should be executed at 40-50kph. The limitation is 80kph. Vertical speed should be max 0,5m/s. Your two running landings were at about 1m/s leading to a touchdown at over 2G. As for the braking: It should be done at 6-8° of collective pitch (not 2°). Cyclic should be deflected 1/3 aft (not fully) and wheel brakes should be used. Additionally, approaches are usually planned in a very conservative manner, at shallow angles and restricted vertical speeds. Anyway - no offense - just felt like sharing.

That much collective was overly excessive for an aerodynamic brake During my test. I never claimed that anything I was doing was “Hind Textbook”. Does it work in DCS? Yes. I’m happy for other people to do as they wish in their channel tho. As for me; if it works in DCS then it’s good enough.

Hey casmo, does a right to left visual sweep seem like a good idea on landing? Outside the pit sweeping from right side to left then down to rotor pitch %, to doppler shift, back to upper right and out of the pit?

dont you have track ir? why dont you just lean over to the side to get a better view forwards ?

@@CasmoTV If fixed wing aircraft really are the same in dcs than in real life, without having to worry about gforces I could fly one but this? No way. I also don't have ruddar pedals which makes it so that I have to twist the whole time and keep that twist. It's constant work flying a heli, in a fixed wing you can just put on t he auto pilot and go to bed.
