DCS AV-8B NA Harrier II GBU-54 Laser JDAM Tutorial

Ойындар

Hey Guys! In this video we take a look at the new GBU-54 Laser JDAM which combines the Laser Guidance of a standard Paveway type LGB with the GPS/INS guidance of a standard JDAM to combine them into a remarkably accurate and easy to use weapon that is also safer and reduces collateral damage if there is a weapon malfunction!

The LJDAM doesn't do proportional navigation like A2A-missiles, right? @09:39 hard to see with the camera angle if the bomb is doing chase or proportional nav.

You can go into a HTS mode where you can use more hotas controls to use the targeting pod. I don't remember much about it, but you can activate it with Sensor Select Switch down/depress (same one you use to bring up the HUD Flir) twice in under 1 sec. With this you can change between area and point track, change to flir/ccd and other functions.

The AV-8B has 3(!) different types of "interaction-modes" for the TPOD. MPCD, TDC (slew) and HTS . The last transfers nearly all controls for the TPOD to the HOTAS. So it has even more selective/complex Targeting Pod integration, than the F/A-18C or F-16C. The reason is to be able to use the TPOD and still have quick HOTAS controls over LMAVs, DMT/ARBS for designation/drop, if necessary, while having the ability to fully go HTS on the TPOD for example if you do buddy lasing or recon...

what ive found is that you can zoom in with the target in the center of the tpod and it switches to point track easier than leading it

how many GBU-54 can the AV-8 carry? is it only 1 per pylon, or can you use Tripple ejectors with them?

I've made a video showing that you can even loft the bomb with GPS guidance and terminally laser guide it. It is a very versatile weapon.

Very informative and well explained video Spud, thanks! Need to fly the Harrier more, but never get round to it, too many great aircraft to fly, guess we're spoilt for choice 😀, still should make more time for it, keep up the great vids always learn loads from them. 👍

I hate the targeting pod in the Harrier.. Im probably just a spoiled modern sim pilot but my GOD do I love the Targeting Pod in the Jf-17... Auto point track, easy manipulation from HOTAS, nice clear picture and the only thing you have to fiddle with is the Gain and brightness which is usually a one time per flight kina thing... Especially in VR it sucks to try to work with Tpod with the MFD buttons

umm you say use Display management mode? what key-bind is that, I only see TDC, and SSS modes . I have been trying to drop Laser guided/ GPS bombs, for a week now; and can not get a cue release indicator. I need key press specifics, I have a T50CMv2 Virple throttle, and a TMC 50 -2 Mongoose stick. Also I been using the Jtac to laser and that's not giving me the release cues. I'm not using the TPOD as its to confusing, I'm using the DMT. also when using the T-pod with the TDC it goes opposite of what my bindings are assigned. when I have the map facing N-north -up the slews are reversed.

The Harrier has two modes for AP, the AFC, which holds current attitude (and snaps to wings level if you are close enough), and the altitude hold. The latter will obviously hold the altitude, but the trick is you have to first put the jet into AFC, then activate alt-hold, since alt-hold can't work without the AFC :) Hope that helps :D

The real reason why you put the TGP on your right MFD is because of an old habit taken from Jane's F-15. Well, mine certainly is.

The marine core doesn't have HTS Hotas commands on their Harriers due to budget constraints ? Anyway moving on, honestly Spudknocker with respect perhaps check out Red Kites video or Chucks Guide on how to operate the targeting pod if your not familiar with the basic operation of the harrier. kzread.info/dash/bejne/n6mdz9yQZbeTaaQ.html In short to control the TPOD its it Sensor Select Down twice within 0.8 of a second. This will then enable HTS mode on the HOTAS, in summary the Sensor Select (SS) keys then function as; SS Aft short - Toggles between Area and Point Track SS AFT Long (longer than 0.8 sec) - Select INR track mode SS Left Short - Toggles between Narrow and Wide FOV SS Left Long - Enters LSS mode SS Right Short - Toggles Flir Polarity WH/BH SS Right Long - Toggles between CCD/FLIR To exit HTS mode again double click SS Down within 0.8 seconds and remember to select TDC mode again to designate the target. HTS mode is used primarily for searching for targets prior to committing to an attack run. Hope this helps and wish you good luck with learning the Harrier and perhaps it's worth recording or updating the video tutorial again.

Multiple separate targets in the same Area? You could loose 8 JDAMS onto 8 targets in 1 pass. However with the laser Jdams your just using a laser guided weapon, not really a JDAM... In my eyes it's only usful if you were only gonna use standard laser guided weapons anyway. I like Jdams to be fire and forget or multiple static targets at once

The term “bang bang” guidance is not about what it’s targeting or its accuracy. It’s about how the fins work. From Wikipedia on the GBU-12 “Paveway II laser-guided bombs use what is known as "bang bang" guidance. This means the bomb's fins deflect fully, rather than proportionally when it is attempting to guide to the laser spot. For example, if it sees the laser spot and determines that it should make a change it deflects its fins until it has over-corrected and then it deflects back the opposite direction, creating a sinusoidal type of flight path. This type of guidance may be less efficient at times, however is more cost effective and allows the use of simpler electronics in the guidance system.” Later Paveway III weapons use proportional control that is more costly, but results in a more energy-efficient drop.

Yeah, it's ridiculous how bad the harrier still is, so many bugs and so much is still lacking in its UI.
