DCS: AH-64D | FCR ZOOM and C-SCOPE
Ойындар
FCR Basics:
FCR Introduction: • DCS: AH-64D | Fire Con...
FCR Pages and Controls: • DCS: AH-64D | Fire Con...
NOTE 4. As always, these videos provide a preview of an upcoming feature to assist you in understanding a new feature. Later, it is quite possible that the feature will change, and the feature functionality has changed. As much as I’d like to, I lack the time re-record these videos.
In this DCS: AH-64D video, we’ll discuss use of the Fire Control Radar, or FCR, Zoom and C-Scope functions. The Zoom function will allow you to expand a small area of the FCR display to distinguish targets in proximity and more easily to engage them. The C-Scope function allows you to display FCR symbols over the HMD and the TADS.
These functions are crew station independent, meaning, use in one station will not affect the FCR display of the other station. To use Zoom, the station that wishes to use it must have the FCR selected as the Sight. For a more detailed accounting of the FCR, I’ve listed links to previous videos on the topic.
First, let’s scan ahead and detect some targets on the FCR. We can use Zoom in one of two ways:
First, by pressing the Zoom button on the TEDAC right handgrip, the FCR will switch to a 6:1 format around the Next to Shoot, or NTS, target. Pressing the button again will return the FCR to the normal format. This is a fast way to zoom in on your NTS.
Second, with an NTS, selecting ZOOM from R1 displays a 6:1 white box with an X through it on the FCR is displayed that indicates the footprint of the Zoomed area. Using the display cursor, we can slew the Zoom box anywhere on the FCR display to determine where we wish to zoom into. With the press and release of the cursor enter switch, the FCR will display just the area covered by the Zoom box. You can then use the NTS cycle function and the cursor designation to set an NTS from the zoomed-in display.
In both circumstances, if you command a scan burst, the ZOOM format will automatically exit and then return to the Zoom format once the scan burst is completed.
Now let’s look at C-Scope. C-Scope is very simple to use, in that it is just turned on or off. However, the capability that C-Scope brings to the crew’s collective situational awareness cannot be over-stated.
To enable C-Scope, we’ll bring up the FCR page, and we’ll press button T1 to box the C SCP option, which indicates it is enabled. As we look around with the HMD, we can now see all the symbols that are displayed on the FCR page. These symbols include FCR target symbols, the FCR Next-To-Shoot diamond, the FCR Alternate-Next-To-Shoot triangle, and any recorded missile engagements as X-shaped symbols.
C-Scope symbols are displayed in the same manner as the Navigation Fly-To Cue and are displayed virtually over their real-world locations as seen through the HMD. This allows either crewmember to maintain situational awareness of the battlefield as they look outside the cockpit.
C-Scope can be enabled in either crew station independently of the other, allowing the Pilot and CPG to determine whether they want C-Scope symbols to be displayed within their respective symbologies. Now let’s hop into the CPG seat and see what it looks like when using the TADS.
Ok, now that we’re in the front seat, let’s turn on C-Scope up here. Like before, we bring up the FCR page and press C SCP to enable it. Now, not only will the C-Scope symbols be displayed within my HMD, but if I sight-select TADS by pressing the Sight Select switch to the right, on the right TEDAC grip, the symbols will also be overlaid within my TADS sensor video. This will allow the CPG to rapidly acquire targets on the battlefield which have already been detected by the FCR, which can now be visually identified using TADS optical sensors.
C-Scope isn’t just a valuable tool for an FCR-equipped AH-64; it can also be used in AH-64’s that are not equipped with an FCR but have received FCR target data through the datalink. Even if the FCR is not installed, you can still enable C-Scope on the FCR page by pressing C SCP at button T1.
As you can see, C-Scope is simple to use, but it is a very powerful feature that can drastically improve the situational awareness of the entire flight, provided at least one AH-64 is equipped with an FCR.

c scope function looks like a dream come true. I always found the HMD symbology so limited in the apache for an A/G platform. You only had waypoints and CAQ cross shown. This will be a real game changer.

Wags! Your update videos have been missed
As a former UH-60 CE, seeing those good ol' T700's brings back the memories. There are some differences between the engines in the H-60 and H-64, but not a lot. This was a time (I joined the 82nd in 1985 1/17th Air Cav and 2/82nd AVN BDE) when Congress was demanding smarter program management for major military weapons systems. The H-60 and H-64 were developed around the same time, and there were a lot of mandates to utilize similar components in aircraft. Utilizing the same engine in both eliminated having to set up different supply lines and maintenance facilities for higher level repairs/refurbishment of the engine. Along those lines, the different services all wanted their own development of new utility helicopters, but they were told "nope....the taxpayers already funded a complex program for the H-60, you'll take that and figure out how to make that work". Thus we have the Blackhawk, Seahawk, Pavehawk, and Jayhawk :)

Everything about the Apache makes it so smooth to use for target acqusition and weapon employment. This addition adds a total new layer to the concept. Time to bring biscuits and tea on the next flight. Its going to be convenient for sure. Well as long as we dont get shot at 😅 Really nice to see the progress Wags ✌️ Thank you! 🎉
Great new features, especially c-scope. And the detail of the engine and avionics bays are gorgeous!
So we have panels and now more function with the fcr. Wags what a great day. Great video as always, sir!!!

About time
Thanks Wags ! Be safe !
this is quite useful and cool!!!
The real question here: When are we going to get optimized cockpit for the AH-64 given that it pumps 9.5GB of VRAM cold on the ramp? There is no reason for it to be like that and it's the only module that does that. Haven't been able to enjoy it since it released. As a reminder, this is the recommended VR system Reqs ( I laughed) : OS 64-bit Windows 10; DirectX11; CPU: Core i5+ at 3+ GHz or AMD FX / Ryzen; RAM: 16 GB (32 GB for heavy missions); Free hard disk space: 120 GB on Solid State Drive (SSD); Discrete video card NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 / AMD Radeon RX VEGA 64 or better
Very impressive stuff.
Thats awesome...already like c-scope
Great video. Time to get back to the Apache :) One thing everybody has been asking for is an update to how ground units shoot as it ruins flying helos. Can we please ask for an update on changing this as with more and more helos it is becoming an every increasing barrier for enjoying flying the helos.
Great stuff Wags.
Man, DCS keeps getting better and better- DYNAMIC Campaign, please, Wags!

US Army AH-64D's have never been capable of employing air-to-air missiles, despite the internet folklore.
C scope looks handy. However. I think the whole radar system looks like an infallible god cheat mode. I doubt in real life its so accurate in detection or target selection. Also when we have civ traffic on thats all invisible. While military trucks are magically visible.

@@Phvpark wow! The SA must be amazing.
I have no idea what you said at the start because I was giggling too much at the panels opening and closing.
Is the FCR going to perform better soon? Line of sight from the FCR to the target isn’t enough, you have to be so high up that you can spot the targets visually for the FCR to stand a chance of detecting them.
@sloppydog4831
Ай бұрын
I thought the same. But I ran some tests and the total number of detected targets is shown on the upper right corner of the FCR page. Sometimes it seems that the radar is not picking everything up, but it is that the targets are so close to each other that they show as one on the radar. That's where the zoom function will be useful. I would recommend testing it again and seeing the number of targets detected by the FCR. From my experience it is detecting, but just not showing on the radar screen. I could be wrong, though.
@mumblerinc.6660
Ай бұрын
@@sloppydog4831 That is not the issue here. As you climb incrementally and perform radar scans, you can clearly see targets visually before anything pops up on the FCR.
@123TheCloop
Ай бұрын
@@mumblerinc.6660 because the radar still has a vertical degree limit, i cannot remember the actual number but if you want the FCR to pick targets up when you are higher up then you need to nose down or go in a slight forward tilt motion while scanning if you want rapid succession of launches on the move or stationary (high above the zone of engagement)
@mumblerinc.6660
Ай бұрын
@@123TheCloop Do read before replying. The issue isn’t that the FCR stops detecting targets as you climb: *the issue is that you have to climb for the FCR to detect targets which you can already see visually.*

So, I made this huge target range on Tonopah Dry Lake to run some practice missions. Went there with the Ole '64, FCR XMIT, and... only 4 targets were showing. I was puzzled and thinking that the FCR was not working. Then I watched some of your old videos where you say that the number of detected targets is shown on the upper right corner of the FCR page. I went back to the range, turned on the radar and... voilá: 116 targets detected. Turns out it wasn't 4 targets, but 4 target groups, with the vehicles very much bundled together. The FCR was working right all along. The zoom feature will sure help a lot in situations like these. Looking forward to this new update.

It has been nearly a year since RAZBAM has worked on the acknowledged years old bugs, broken training missions and unfinished manual for the Harrier. Please take it over and get it fixed and finished. They posted on their discord in March of 2023 that they were stopping work on the Harrier to work on the F-15 and the stoppage remains today. We already paid for the Harrier, there is no excuse for leaving it in the condition it is in and refusing to support it.
I hope the modelers are working on something more productive than more body panels opening... things like proper search radars for the SA-5 or fixing the C17 models... or really anything else useful to the simulation environment. It's cool and all, but it's also wasted time and continuing the neglect of the core product.
I must say Apache is not so easy to use in a lot of way, especially this primitive information sharing functionality
