In an age of excessive corporate greed, it’s very refreshing to see these priced at $10

I have been wanting dc/ marvel to do this for YEARS! Something to compete with manga affordability and get people to feel like they are truly getting their moneys worth with easy to digest amazing comics. They better continue because I’m going to give these to my manga/anime only friends to introduce them to western comics!

I’m going to be so happy if this keeps going though, especially for the big powerhouse stories of recent years just so my friends that only read manga can give western comics a chance. Every time I try to get them in, price is a brick wall because for the price of a trade nowadays they could get two volumes of manga. Or they feel like they can’t get a complete story. Plus it’s in color! Crossing my fingers they don’t discontinue this format for years to come

Every time I try to get them in, price is a brick wall because most of the time for one trade paperback they can get 2 volumes of manga. Or they feel like they don’t know where to start to get a whole satisfying story. Plus in color comics at that price point! So excited to get people in on this

They will extend the line, we are getting a catwomen one sometime in November and another one in December that I think is batman/catwomen Gotham war and another 2 in January. That's all that's been advertised for preorder and that I know of but hopefully this line continues. Picking up copies of both on Saturday at my local comic shop, can't wait

I might get the American vampire as never before read and might check out catwomen, already read batman hush loads of times but got rid of so would be lovely to have that in the collection. Is the all star superman story good? cos if so I will buy when out

​@@daz.t All Star Superman is good but you kinda have to be familiar with the character so it's not really an introduction for new readers

I got my copy of Watchmen yesterday, and I can confirm that the printing is beautiful and the type is very clear so that even my old-man eyes (61) have no problem reading them (which was a concern going in)

For the price you cant ask for much, these are great for some new readers to have a cheap option. Great job DC!

Honestly this is such a great way for fans who can’t afford Deluxe HC’s or Omni’s or for fans who want to jump right into the story Wish DC did this when I started collecting years ago

Both are definite must-buys for me. The colors and lettering look great for the diminished page size, and the price is exactly what this hobby needs Give us more DC!

This has been going a few years in Spain, where DC licensed his publications to EEC Ediciones, and struggling with high prices on books, they made a DC Pocket line. Panini, The licensed Marvel publisher in Spain, is doing the same with an "Essential" line. Comic reading is not a "disposable income" endeavour for many now, it is a luxury. Good for this in the US

Thanks for the video. IMO it's sewn binding. You can see the separate pieces of the pages... yes, the pages are glued to the rootlet, so it's sewn and glued binding like lot of books out there.

Don’t know why DC bother with sewn binding if they’re going to use so much glue preventing you from spreading the pages!

Do I need another Watchmen copy? No. Am I still buying a pocket sized one to read on the go? For sure

I actually wanted a cheap way to gift court of owls to someone, This is pretty dope.

This is an exciting format!!

It looks like the comment I originally responded to has been deleted, so I'll re-post here that these will be good to make content more accessible for new audiences, available at an affordable price and small enough that someone can take the books with them on the go. And they're also getting a full story, not just a set-up for the issue.

Seems like a great way of introducing these comics to new readers who would appreciate the format. I wonder how some comic art will work when shrunk down, or how readable some of the words will be. Make it into a series that's collectible and will look neat lined up on a shelf and I bet you'll hook in new readers.

In France we have Urban Nomad since 2 years, same kind of format and it sells good

The thriller thing is for libraries and bookstores… it’s not a “line”

I already have both books in multiple formats, sure I'll get these as well.

I quite like this new compact format. Yes, the artwork will inevitably suffer, but the price is extremely competitive. I will probably buy a few of those. I wouldn’t mind seeing Preacher and Sandman in this format. We’ll see.

These aren’t glued binding. They are sewn binding as you can see the sections when you look underneath and if you open the book wide enough you can actually see the thread through the pages. Not sure they needed to be sewn binding but not complaining.

@@downtowntrain2319 it’s still classified as sewn-binding. With sewn-bound books, a group of sheets folded in half is inserted into a binding machine and sewn into several sections. These sections are then glued into the spine of the cover with endpapers.

@@downtowntrain2319 I’m not sure where you got the information about shorthand to communicate how a book opens but it’s how the book is put together. Glued binding (PUR) binding is where the pages and cover are glued together. These DC Compact editions are thread-sewn paperbacks where the pages of the printed book have been printed separately to the cover and have been folded into sections, sewn and collated into a book block. I’m not replying anymore but thought it would be helpful for you to learn the difference so you know going forward.

just bought court of owls today, love the compact size. as someone who reads manga more recently, love the size. hopefully they release more.

I'll get the Watchmen compact comic, I already have the story in a regular tradepaperback but I'm really curious about the reading experience for something so dialogue heavy and with so many nine panel grids across the twelve chapters. I think this is a great format for READERS, not collectors, and that´s great in my book, because if there´s one thing the comic book industry needs ritght now are new readers.

I just bought this series and so far it’s great I like this type of size and it’s like hold a manga I hope they release more of this type of novel

Took me a little while to get my hands on one of these, but I can say with 100% certainty that this ten dollar, digest size book is in fact sewn binding making it an even greater value and a perfect candidate for a hardcover rebind! I'm down for more. I have DC Deluxe editions of books that aren't even sewn binding.

I wish I had these when I was a teenager, but not anymore with these old eyes. I just bought the Miracleman omni because I got so annoyed because I couldn't read it without my glasses.

Just picked up both today on a whim. As a casual comic reader, these are brilliant, and the price is beautiful.

Not my cup of tea as a format, but they look great for people who want to get to know DC, both the main universe and the best of the rest.

I'll have to try these even though I own the stories in other formats if only to show some support. Omar, is there any word on future releases of the DC Classics Library? I bought the Watchmen edition & wondered if any more of those beautiful slipcover editions are forthcoming.

Always wanted to read Watchmen and I got a copy today. For $10 it was a no question. Read the first issue and had no problems with reading.

I will definitely be adding these to my collection! Even though the size is what it is, seems like a great value considering the number of issues you get for the price!!

If I didn’t have the omnibus and tpb’s of these runs I definitely buy these. $10 for each is such a good deal.

Cool novelty and might pick a few of these up. BIZARRE that they have Wonder Woman Earth One on the horizon for compact edition, because that series was not well received, but I guess they figured they needed a WW book and Grant’s name would sell. Thanks for the overview Omar, this was a fun one

Waiting on my Watchmen book to arrive. Pretty excited, because I’d like to read some of the more notable books, but I don’t have the room for larger books or interest for more expensive books. So hopefully they continue to release them.

Used to take trades and takobans all the time to the way to college knocked out so many stories like that like part 1 of csm,batman hush, wolverine 1982 etc This looks great for people traveling

This seems like such a killer price for that amount of comics. Sure, these are not for the collectors but more for the people who are wanting to get into reading comics without what can be a steep starting price for some of the collected volumes. Would love to see these on sale in more places to get more people into comics. The missing rating is concerning.

I picked up a bunch of those smaller Marvel digest editions a while back. The spines did not hold up, some were absolutely terrible. Especially the Runaways books, whole sections of pages came loose. I'll probably completely avoid these DC Compacts because of this. But I've never had any problems with any manga spines before, so maybe these DC books will hold up over time?

Quite perfect to gift/recommend to any new casual comic reader. Can't really complain with this price (yeah I'm new reader and I pre-order all of it). ~10 dollar to get a full story vs ~25 for two tpb, it is too great for any new reader who want to read other heros/story

I do indeed take the train to university (I'm in Australia and I do frequently read manga and webtoons on the way as they are easy to take with. As you suggested, these will finally allow me to read comics on the train too.

I'm sure Alan Moore will be thrilled that DC are doing another new printing of Watchman. The colours look too dark on that Batman compact book, but the format is a nice idea.

We have the same kind of line in france since 1 year ago (or maybe more) called nomad (in urban comics company). But I dont know if its exactly the same size. But for some title (wordy ones) I dont really find it convenient

I’m sure the omission of a rating is a mistake that will be rectified going forward. I thought these books may have been a little more ‘compact’ but at least the text seems fairly easy to read. A nice idea with a great pricepoint!

It's a good move, after reprinting some timeless classic this price point will be a great way to lure new readers and promote new series. Of course this format isn't perfect and some titles won't look good (like those text dense scripts by Moore).

Marvel better follow suit and DC better keep this up. They’ve been making a lot of moves to appeal to new readers but THIS is a fucking massive great step. Even as a collector I got watchmen - which I’m not even a huge fan of - cuz I’m a sucker for newsprint and I want this to continue All star superman, far sector, American vampire, and hush are probably my most anticipated

It's better because it's THICK AND INEXPENSIVE, compared to the regular comics. Feels like reading a manga.

In my country Watchmen were in children’s book section… but this affordable format is truly amazing idea, it’s the key for comic book industry longevity as well as capturing some existing Manga reader base. If you ask me this format should replace first line 5-7 issue thin tpbs and only 12 issue + complete collections should be delegated to traditional format. My only complaint is that they should update to a bigger font to make reading experience much smoother.

I think this is a smart idea for reading or a gift. I don't think this is for 99% of the fans on this channel, but this is how you grow fans.

How is the readability though? Because even with the regular sized comics I feel sometimes the texts are a bit hard to read. Even with manga's it can be a bit tricky.

This is great for new readers and just allowing people to get these stories at a great price point. I wonder if they’ll be even cheaper on the likes of CGN and IST. But old guys like me with declining eyes will still need the bigger books. 😂

I thought this ones where kind of useless, specially comparing the watchmen one with the super available good old soft cover but man, thinking about it... 10 dollars and it is in full color? What the hell, yes! I am preordering Superman and Batman HUSH because I have always wanted to read those stories and sometimes I get tired of reading in my tablet.

These aren't for me but are a great idea for new fans. The challenge will be making them aware they exist. Hopefully when they have a few more volumes out DC will promote them on social media, maybe include an ad for them on DC dvds and blu rays and so on, otherwise I fear they may get lost on bookstore shelves with dozens, if not hundreds of other graphic novels and the line will die off.

Just bought these myself today at far below the RRP. These things could actually get me buying comics again,something which I had given up on in these days of the beliefs of the authors/publishers taking precedent over good storytelling. These classic stories in this format are so tempting. I effectively paid less than the cost of 2 single issues of an American comic in the uk today per book, one of which I believe contains 12 issues and the other 11. I must admit I wasn't completely behind the idea when the line was first announced but now wish releases were happening more frequently than is planned. I hope these are a hit for DC and the line continues
