After she claims every last being (including her siblings), the concept of Death will cease to exist, meaning she will claim herself, or as she put it, "I'll put the chairs on the tables, put out the lights, and lock the universe behind me when I leave."

Death loves people. Her job is complicated and people need to die. She's very well written in Sandman and her limited series: The High Cost of Living.

Given Death (of Endless) personality, I sure would like to be there for her at the end. Just to chat with her. She's got a great personality, a warm smile, and infinite wisdom through countless experience (just for Earth humans, there is a death every 3 seconds). Except she's present in all deaths, not just humans (insect, a rock, even the concept of time). And she doesn't just take people away forcefully (although she can, if she wanted to). She chats with them, and brings them spiritual comfort, regardless of how long it takes (at the moment of death of a thing, the time freezes, so she has infinite time to do what she needs to do).

Minor correction, big fan of the endless. She would not be the only one at the end of the universe. The endless themselves as concepts don't die, even though their faces do, with the exception of her who does something similar during her moments... Not only that, the other Endless have survived through different universes. They move onto other universes. Death is the only one who is guaranteed to be left UNCHANGED at the end and close the door on that universe. Last one to leave. But as long as there is dream/reality, Delirium/truth, despair/hope, Destiny/free will, desire/apathy and Destruction/creation all of her siblings will exist in some form. tl;dr: The representative personification might change. Their concept may warp. But they are the endless because their concepts are eternal.

There actually is one. The concepts can and have waited there at the end of the world inn. But they also... It's a MULTIVERSE. So they are not chained to any one universe. They can also exist in multiple times and places. They are the active faces but their concepts go unhindered in other areas. That's why Death talked about being the last one to put up the chairs, turn off the lights and close the door to the old universe. It's not that her siblings have died. It's that she is the one who does the finishing touches. She learned a long time ago she has to do her duties. She can't abandon them like Destruction has. Also totally ask me more questions, I have read those books far too much and I am fairly comfortable in my knowledge of the endless.

Kevin Hernandez: As far as power goes, there is no scale for the Endless. Only a few things can influence them and even fewer can kill the current aspect, which only will give raise to a new aspect. Dr. Manhatten would have to confront them in their individual centers of power and what they can do there depends on which Endless he faces. For example, as powerful as Dr. Manhatten is, he still has desires, so Desire can influence him as she is each and every desire. Dream literally is the reality of the Dreaming, so Dream could do anything he wants with Dr. Manhatten. Dr. Manhatten's powers will only work there if Dream allows them to work. Destiny, well Destiny is in some ways like Dr. Manhatten. All that will ever happen is written in his book and everything happens as he reads it. While he has been surprised in the past, his book details everything that happens in the universe until his sister Death takes him (as seen in 'Books of Magic'). Despair, is like Desire and even Dr. Manhattan can despair. I'm not sure about Delirium's abilities, but I doubt the Orderly Dr. Manhatten can deal with her chaotic naure. While Destruction has retired, he has not given up his power, but using them again would mean to take up he mantle of Destruction again, something he does not want to. But if he does, as with his siblings, he is destruction, that is what he does. And Death... well, we saw Death at the end of the universe, cleaning up the place before closing the door behind her and there was no Dr. Manhatten there. That said, Dr. Manhatten probably can influence the Endless in some ways. There are ways how some entities and even mortals can influence the Endless, but it is not advisable as it rarely ends well for them. One Demon Lord rejected Dream's hospitality and, well, Dream has a chest with some stuff in it, including a sphere with the trapped Demon Lord. Even when the old aspect died, the sphere was still in that chest. Considering that the old Dream banished his love to hell for 10,000 years and only was going to release her after it was ponted out to him that he was unfair to her, I have my doubts that the Demon Lord will be free anytime soon.

I just watched the DC animated short Death and it was amazing, it made me want to look more into the character which lead me here

Wouldn’t death killing all life basically bring upon the death of death. I mean death only exists because life exists so if life ceases to exist so will death since how can death exist if there’s nothing to die

Death from the endless is basically death. She is not a reaper just appeares when it is your time. The others are just helping her because she has to get everyone at some point. I like how DC writes her. She is there when you are born and when you die. She's there to let you live your life and experience it to its fullest whatever you do deside to do with it and takes you when it's time to go. When reading about her she's so lively because she knows nothing is forever so she just enjoys it while she can. Even those that are immortal know they can't outrun her forever but she will wait for them. She doesn't interfere but she is there to persuade you to live. PS she's not evil, chaotic or good but lawfully nutrual. Yes she has the power to take anyone anywhere anytime but only takes you when it is your time. She does not discriminate because everything dies or just ends

Wait but isn't death the grim reaper 🤔

If Necron was the first threat ever faced by the Guardians, that could explain why they chose their original enforcers to be machines. They by definition couldn’t die, and thus be used to fuel and entity like Necron.

I like to think that Death is the actual concept and the other three are just her underlings for certain specialty areas (speedsters, new gods...... lanterns?).

I think Death's relationship is different with everyone. For some, it's a joke, some an inevitable monster, and others just another part of a journey. Maybe every hero sees Death differently, and we can only see all the forms of it because we just happen to be the spectators of the stories.

Death of the endless is death in concept. The black racer is the idea of death being inevitable for all beings even 'gods' Nekron is the fear and hatred of death, the idea that it is fundamentaly wicked and evil. At least that's just my theory. As for the black racers taking a different form in order to draw speedsters into the speed force once thier time is up.

Even with that morbid end, your videos make me happy.

Death is my favorite portrayal of death as an entity in all of fiction. She's also one of my favorite characters ever.

I love how speedsters are so many and so important in the DC universe. That they need their own grim reaper. XD

So Death (the endless) was cool with blackest night event? She seems way to laid back to have let that happen if she even knew about it. I mean you have a whole lanturn core dedicated to you, one would think she would have said something to them at some point.

She actually is usually uninvolved in the actual dying part. She knows how people are supposed to die but her duty is that they do and to escort them to their afterlife if there isn't a reaper to. She doesn't mind zombies, ghosts or if people opt to not even die. But unless they do something that specifically makes it so she can never be involved with them again without an intermediary, Orpheus did this when he went to the underworld for his wife, she can always come to pick them up later.

Well the thing is dying is still painful. She's actually so chill because most people panic and react badly to having died. She just knows the alternative is worse. She ran away once from her duties. All we know about that is it was... Not a good thing. Everything was in pain from being unable to die. And I don't know much about Blackest night but I know she wouldn't approve. But she doesn't actively get involved in those sort of events. Several immortals were killed by Destruction, Joe doesn't want to be destruction again so he has some rather fatal fail safes, and although she lets immortals come in their own time... At that point she had to take them. There are some rules to her involvement.

Black Lanterns aren't a group devoted to Death of the Endless, they're a group of zombies controlled by Nekron (another entity of death, as was described). It isn't some fan group, it's Nekron trying to become more powerful.

Zak The Street Fighter in my opinion, they are more of a courierol or escort for the souls in which they escort the souls from the mortal spiritual plane to the entrance of the afterlife after the mortal lifespan expires

I see all of them on a scale with nekron being the lowest, the black racer being middle and death of the endless being the strongest

I don’t see death as an aspect of death and Death as death itself to be mutually exclusive, just like Dream having forms recognized in various pantheons doesn’t make him any less Dream itself. I think it’s reasonable for Death to be also a manifestation of herself, and have ties with roles in relation to the other manifestations even if ultimately, they are temporary facets of her domain. After all, I’m well established canon, Death is also individual to each personal experience of Death, so why wouldn’t she be as herself a face and aspect of her own broader comic identity?

The thing is she was sort of written as a personification. So she is the face of the whole concept. That will. So her as an aspect is just wrong. Each Endless is the form and active will of their concept.

Added to that. Reapers are sort of treated as her employees. They can lead to specific afterlives people want to go to and are supposed to go to. That's how psychopomps can coexist with her. If there isn't a reaper to lead them, then she leads them through the sunless lands to their afterlife. But she will never see their afterlife and unless they reincarnate she will never see them again.

Athan Nyx Again, your mileage may vary, but I don’t see why you the will of a concept would be mutually exclusive from representing an aspect of her own concept, taking on a specific role within her larger one. Especially seeing as active will can quite reasonably be read as one aspect of Death’s operation as a character.

The reason is she is supposed to be death itself. Death the character. A personification. All the endless are personifications. That is like saying Nyx is just a piece of the night. She IS the night. Death is basically the form you can understand and are comfortable with for that concept. I don't take as much offense by her just going along with it because it's actually what death does. She's not going to make someone upset or go into a concept if you can't handle it. But I see Neil Gaiman's issue because it confuses how Death is supposed to be. The others can be, and probably are, representing aspects. She has representatives. Psychopomps and gods actually technically count as working for her. But she's supposed to be the very concept of death in a form you can talk to.

I'm always fascinated with the more religious side of dc, especially the endless, those guys are epic. I also like untold backstories of certain characters. Right now, i am thinking of a fan made dc comic book called "the family", it's the life of thomas wayne and his secret. No spoilers

The metaphor w Death lifting the chairs and closing the door is so awesome and Sandman is so epic,that to infer she isn't The Death is just nonsense :)

In my opinion: Black Racer is the inevitability, while Black Flash is probably an expression of him or the speed force manifesting a way to kill speedsters across time. Nekrom being a cosmic death also makes sense. Death of the endless would just be Lady Death, the form of death that is your companion in your final moments. Always able to appear through the ability of the Black Racer as an inevitability and Nekrom as a cosmic force that exists throughout the universe. But as far as I know, Vertigo was always supposed to be it's own thing so it was probably shoehorned in. Preferably, Death shouldn't have a true form, only expressions. Since death as many faces: the inevitable, the reaper, the beautiful woman, the ferryman and much more.

I like to think that characters like The Black Racer and The Black Flash are kinda like Death of the Endless' henchmen in a sense. If someone, the Flash, is somehow able to cheat her, it'd be Black Flash's job to kick his ass for her.

You haven't watched it yet. It's been up for less than three minutes.

The way I see it, is that since dream has an incarnation for the dreams of different beings (as seen in the sandman:overture), it make sense that black racer is the incarnation of death of the endless for the new gods, the black flash is the incarnation for the speedsters, and Nekron is most likely the death of the first created things (again, see sandman: overture for what that last one means)

In Overture,it was the same being,but with different form ( he is an abstracr being, his physical form depend how you see it, and in Overture,there's all forms of Dream. It wasn't others gods of dream,it was Only Dream of the Endless )

The way she puts it "when everything is said and I'll be the one to put up the chairs,turn off the lights, and lock the door."

One more death left out is the force called 'The Black' and its Parliament of Decay from Swamp Thing. Not technically a reaper figure in DC continuity, but it is pretty relevant.

There was the traditional Grim Reaper who appeared pre-Crisis, as the host of DC's horror or war-based stories. Also, even though all speedsters ends up in the Speed Force, Barry somehow appears in Heaven to talk to Green Arrow (or rather his soul) in Kevin Smith's run of "Green Arrow".

The Death of The Endless is the embodiment of ENTROPY something a little above traditional Death. This also confirmed by the fact that one of the Endless described himself and his Endless siblings as a "Wave Function."

Isn’t what she says “after I reap the last soul, I’ll put up the chairs, turn off the lights, and lock the universe behind me when I leave.” She’s so goddamn cool

I think the Black Flash isn’t a sentient entity in the usual sense like the others. You know the whole “energy cannot be created or destroyed”? When a speedster gets their powers, it takes away a small amount of Speed Force away from the whole. In universe, it’s something that’s not supposed to happen so the empty space manifests as the Black Flash to take back what was removed and it just manifests as a Flash-like being because it’s taking the same shape as the space that was left.

Maybe what separates death of the endless from the other three is that she is the ultimate authority, being not just the person who takes life but the person who gave it in the first place, which could mean that she never really takes it away, but she’s just returning what she borrowed

Death of the Endless is by far the cutest of the dc grim reapers, I don't think anyone will fight me on that one.

While I get why Gaiman was upset(cuz he really wasn't writing his Sandman stories to be apart of the main UC Universe), I like the idea of Black Racer, Death, Black Flash, etc being different aspects of the same thing that somehow exist concurrently. Sorta like over in Marvel, they have Mephisto, Thog, Satan, Blackheart, etc, all being different aspects of the Devil.

Weissman had a point. There were other deaths in DC comics before Geilman decided to write a "one true death" which is what REALLY confuses things. There's a death of all things but also several deaths for specific things. So if nekron takes some mortals, black racer takes the new God's and black flash takes speedsters, who or what does Death take (besides those other "deaths" which technically shouldn't be capable of dying anyway) I feel like either there should be only one death OR multiple equal aspects of death for different things, but not both. And it's not like the endless were entirely separate from the dcu anyway. Hell, Geilman used other pre-existing DC characters in his work at times, like when he used Fury and Hector Hall to create his second Sandman, Daniel Hall. So Weissman didn't "shoehorn Death into the DC Universe" Geilman literally wrote her into it. All Weissman did was attempt to make sense of it. He expects Weissman to run things by him, yet he never ran things by other writers who also had death based characters before him

I've always had a crush on Death of the Endless since reading Gaiman.

I think the three deaths are like, if Death of the endless is the straight up concept of death, then Nekron is like the emotion of death. Similar to how there's this weird whale thing which is the manifestation of the emotion of willpower, then Nekron is the emotion which encompasses Death. While the Black Racer is more or less the god of death, similar to Thanatos or something where he's just there to claim the new gods and deliver them to Death herself.

Death of the endless and black racer are by far my favourites

I was lucky enough to get an answer from Gaiman last year and he pretty much said the same thing; Black Racer, Nekron, Black Flash, etc. will one day die, and Death of the Endless will come for them.

Death of the Endless makes Mr.Meseeks so relatable

that intro has serious Vsauce vibes, introducing yourself, and just instantly jumping in with "all things must die"

The thing about Endless's Death is that she's the personification of the action itself--shes not so much an existing creature as she is an event. All the others--Racer, Flash, Nekron exists and can be defeated even. Death though? She just kind of... is. So the others, who will stop existing at some point, will eventually be reaped by her.

I think I have a theory about the black racer and black flash connection. What if every type of being has a specific death to them, so speedsters have the black flash, new god's have black racer, and so on (examples could be like, lantern corps having one or meta humans as well). So each distinct form of life that has mystical abilities have their own "black" death but each black death are aspects of the one black death being. Then, since the most powerful entities the black death precedes over are the new gods, his physical body defaults to the black racer, as it's in a way his own most powerful form.

I love the idea of Endless Death. She is so nice and absolutely who I want to meet when I die.

About the end bit: It's really not that bad. If I remember right, her exact words were "When this universe..." as in this current one. She might have to wait abit but another universe will pop up eventually.
