DC-3 Short field landing
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
This is the proper way to land a DC-3 on a short strip. Nose down to kill all lift and get maximum pressure on the landing gear, apply full brakes, let the tail down gently when the speed drops and you end up with a ground roll of 300 meters. This day there was a five knot crosswind from the left so the wind didn't help much to lower the landing speed.

I am an old chap (91). I spent many hours aloft in that magnificent bird! I also remember D-Day and the paratrooper flights. God bless Donald Douglas.

Sweet landing! The pilot & the plane are one. Donald Douglas is smiling down on you!
Brilliant - just enough pressure on the brakes to keep the aircraft on its main gear. Superb feel for the aircraft.
My first flight was from Dallas to Temple, Texas on a DC-3. It was early June, 1954. Back then, the terminal at Dallas Love Field was a small 2 story building off of Lemmon Ave. Great memories, thanks for the post!
Really appreciate the Skills there!!!! Awesome landing!!!
I'm a longtime taildragger pilot and I like seeing wheel landings. The DC-3 would be my ultimate taildragger to fly. Beautiful airplane, too.
Ah the magic of the DC3, arguably the greatest plane ever made. What a textbook landing, and to lower that tailwheel so gently with just 'feeling' the brakes, incredibly hard to do that smoothly, great vid !!!

Glad to see someone else noticed how gently he sit the tail wheel down almost to a stop, impressive. Obviously not his first rodeo.
@Pjuskos I can confirm what you are saying is indeed very correct.... This aircraft is a DC-3 called both "I'm here now!" and it's also called by the original name "Congo Queen" The owner of this aircraft is the Captain "Åke Janssons" Aircraft registration: 9Q-CUK I saw it in real life about 3 months ago, at Eslöv's Aeroclub.. And it was absolutely such a joy to watch it fly and Captain Åke did some precision demonstration this time as well.. Thanks for this video Pjuskos!
Great landing, the Dac inspired great and experienced pilots, from ww2 to 'over the hump' and from the Berlin air - lift to Vietnam gunships, great pilots in the World's greatest aircraft.
Beautiful old aircraft. As a kid, I used to see them floating in the sky over Winnipeg. Home to the then R.C.A.F. Air nav school. Been loving them all my life.

Rickey, I grew up in Silver Heights and watched and listened to every aircraft coming into Winnipeg low over my house. T33, cf100, voodoo, Starfighter, flying boxcar, Beechcraft Expeditor and Harvard both sound alike Expeditor sounded like two Harvards. The Golden Hawks and The Red Knight. Fond memories all
Day-AMMM! Hard on the brakes but not enough to plant the nose into the field. The way he dropped the tail wheel on the ground was magical! I'm going to watch that again!
Sweet landing, well executed. I love that plane.

Short-field landings in a tail-dragger can be dicey and this pilot did a perfect job of this (with a little help from a perfect airplane). Someone needs to start making these types again. Turboprops for fuel cost efficiency, why not?
Long live the DC-3. Fantastic.
Man I love the DC3!!
The dc3 has great colors and looks very nice
Best plane ever made
I work around DC-3's in the Alaskan bush. They have come in on our strip with only 1000ft useable(there insurance say they need 3000ft). Its no joke at all (there was another DC-3 flying for us that said its too dangerous to land at our strip). Pilots uses some crazy/scary off airport techniques. He will come in with a long, flat, and low and I mean dragging landing gear though the trees and then throttles back with no flaps letting it drop below trees and sets it down in a 3 point landing.
Probably the best plane ever designed and built.
I am Uruguayan, 82. I flew on a PLUNA DC-3 twice in 1965, from Montevideo to Punta del Este. A classical, tough aircraft, perhaps a bit noisy. Last chance to fly on one, since Viscounts and Avro748s were already operating the short routes
A fine job, good airmanship, and he knows his aircraft well.
DC-3 the darling aircraft You will never get tired of the design and flight. Fly forever DC-3.
DC-3 and 747's are my favorite planes! Thanks for sharing.
That's a pilot with balls!
That was SOME landing!! Great up thanks.
just love the DC3. such a nostalgic shape to it.
Man...they need to reproduce these nice aircrafts.DC-3 is one of the most beautiful planes ever built in aviation history

That was DamFine, Amigo!
Landing in the rules of the art! ... an excellent pilot, no doubt ....
Some impressive talent there!
When I flew CL-215 in France in 83, I saw fifty DC-3 parked at a French Navy base...none had more than ten hours. Those are the one Basler bought and put turbines on...Ordinary DC-3s skins are all wrinkled up with stress like an old man...those had skins perfectly straight like brand new airplanes, which they were...they still had rifle portholes in the windows for soldiers to shoot their rifles at german airplanes!
These old bombers are a thing of beauty. So nice.
Gotta love to the imperious expression the a/c takes on after it drops the tail.. "Ok job done, now why are you standing taking photos?" Originally got pointed here from a flightsim site called FSE economy. Avid simmers and real pilots live there. Wil visit this many times, thanks again. stevie
The ultimate tail-dragger
maybe not the shortest, but a wheels landing is a safe way to land, and good technique in a crosswind. looks expert to me.
Totally Awesome. Here I thought our loaded C-130T did a great job with less than 4,000 ft narrow runway. We all don't have a USS Forrestal to land on.
Bounced it a bit but controlled it nicely with forward yoke. This is how it's done armchairs. This is not a cubbie or a 172 it's a transport category aircraft that can bite if treated with disrespect. Check out the DC-3 crash vids. That tailwheel is just meant to keep the paint from getting all scratched up under the elevator. Nosing over puts a lot of pressure on the mains, keeps the mains rolling not skidding when braking on the grass, plus adding drag, directional stability and keeping the rudder effective to almost a jogging pace and blanketing the flaps. The DC-3's tailwheel is locked for TO and Ldg. Judging by a briefest glimpse of a pennant I'd say winds were light and variable. Great piece of airmanship. Thanks Mr Douglas and a kid by the name of Jack Northrop who would hang out and help in Santa Monica.
I'm sick and tired of these armchair pilots criticizing this landing. For the the shortest landing distance (and to maximize safety) you want to "plant" the mains and solidly as you can. Keep that aoa minimal and that'll KEEP the weight over the brakes----where you need it. Good job.
@ryanp3907

Exactly. Super Cub tactics probably don't work that great for a plane 18 times its empty weight.
@Feuergraf

I am a pilot seat pilot, the lower your touch down speed, the lower the roll out distance because you have to brake less speed down. You want to keep the weight above the wheels to get better brake effiency? One problem: With that air speed the wings produce lift so you don't have pressure on the wheels at the end and braking is still less effience. A short landing begins with a slow touch down ;)

In as few, or almost as few words as possible, as a DC-3 driver........Absolutely Fuck*ing Right Mate. Weight on mains with tail high means nothing leaves and everything slows.....it's simple math....which evidently many of your critics should go back to school to study.......
DC-3 is one of the most beautiful airplanes ever made.
STOL DC3 - Love it.
I've been in that one when i was a kid!! I belive it was back in 1995@Säve airport, Gothenburg, Sweden! i still have a photo of it taken by my dad (as he worked there at the time) somewhere at my parents house! :)
That's impressive. Nice landing sir.
Living close to Logan Airport in East Boston, I remember the DC-3 flying for Northeast Airlines! What beautiful memories!
I was a bit concerned when the tail came up what I thought might be a bit high and that it might nose in, but it was a great short landing! Great job, well done!

Less AoA = less lift = more weight on the mains = more breaking power without skidding
That Viking cheatline (vintage SAS) looks amazing.
I do love the ancient DC3!
0:21 - 0:23 -- Excellent control
I have seen him doing aerobatics with that plane, He is quite good.
If done correctly of which I did in the mid 80's at a small airport in the middle of Florida, I landed a DC-3 in about 550 feet as the 6th runway light was in front of me when the airplane came to a stop. Lights at this airport was confirmed to be 100 feet apart. I asked my co-pilot to tell me what the indicated airspeed was at the time the main wheels touched down his reply was 35mph indicated. I also had a person check where the touchdown was in reference to the approach end of the runway and his reply was 5 feet from the end. Applying heavy breaks and pushing the control wheel forward also knowing that the DC-3 will not go over on its noise. The only worry I had at the time was when the tail wheel comes down I did not want it to hit hard enough to push the wheel up into the fuselage, other wise I could have stopped even shorter. Conversion of 300 meters to feet is 984.252 ft. My 550 feet (calm wind) landing is a whole lot shorter than 300 meters. So, yes it can be done and was!
@joetheox1202

35mph touchdown speed and it took 500 odd feet to stop? What was the landing weight?
@billb.5887
Жыл бұрын
@@joetheox1202 NOT SURE WHAT THE WEIGHT WAS BUT THE DC-3 WAS A CARGO AIRCRAFT THAT WAS EMPTY WITH ABOUT 40% TOTAL FUEL REMAINING. THE BEST PART WAS THE EXPRESSION ON MY CO-PILOTS FACE WHEN HE SAID 35MPH AT TOUCHDOWN. REMEMBER THIS WAS BACK IN THE MID 80'S AND I HAVE FLOWN A LOT SINCE THEN.
Actually, this method became popular in later years but yesterday's pilots knew how to three point these and some could get them stopped in as little as 700'. It is well documented in places like Alaska.
Captain of mine did that once on a DC-3. Gear light went off because of the heavy braking. Was a ferry flight from Opa Locka to some where south of DFW.
If that wasn´t luck it was f**king briliant
I've never flown anything close to a 3 but ya a 3 point landing will come in shorter IF you bring the tail up as soon as it breaks lift. Then bring your tail up with the brakes on. That's what the supercub guys taught me. timing is the key and you gotta know your plane.
@VEJ2
2 жыл бұрын
DC-3 is a completely different beast then a Supercub. Biggest problem is the low wing versus the high wing. High wing is easy to 3 point. Low wing with all those flaps. On saw a 3 pointer once on a BE-18. After flying it for 4 years.
Very impressive Monsignor !
Excellent film footage and sound.
Fantastic bit of flying,would also like to see the takeoff.
Yes. Always landed a Piper Pawnee PA25-235 Crop Duster this way in challenging conditions. Modified it further to one main-wheel touch-down in a cross-wind. All balanced both air and ground. Made for very safe balanced "stay-stuck" landings hundreds of times.
Looked awful good.
Did many a trip as a passenger on these great airplanes. Brings back good memories...
Me encantan los DC-3 Su figura,su porte,su elegancia al volar etc. Es el avion que vi por primera vez en mi niñes Nunca dejara de gustarme Es todo un Clasico
Hello! Would it be possible for me to use this footage in a small documentary I'm producing about the DC-3? Thanks so much!
I have an RC plane that is a scale model of a DC-3. It's apparently very accurate because the thing scares the hell out of me when it lands, because of the tendency to come in nose down, I've scraped the props up already after just 7 flights.
Amazin, like a small jodel D112 !
Un Noble y hermoso pájaro de Acero...desde niño me trae bonitos recuerdos !!! ❤️
Legendary bird! Nice landing.
Well Pjuskos, hopefully you can join FSE at some point when time permits. there's a load of real life pilots on thre and simmers too, Great place to be. Final thanks on your vid, I really enjoy it. Stevie
the force of the wind made such a short run possible. can be seen from the tail
Love this vid.
I understand those DC-3's had a great glide ratio, enabling you to almost turn off the engines and coast it in!

Some DC-3's had their Engines removed and were used as gliders...
It took both skill and courage to stand on the brakes balancing the aircraft like that to stop in such a short space. Not many would take up the challenge, fewer still would be able to pull it off.
Nice landing
Nice. I want to see the short takeoff.
Hard to tell from the video. Much easier to tell from the cockpit. The short field landings we practiced in the military (with the C-47) had a VERY STEEP descent angle, MUCH steeper than a normal approach. Power is just about OFF and the aircraft appears to be coming straight down, like in an elevator. In the video...It didn't look that steep...but maybe I'm just not used to seeing a "short field" descent, as viewed from the ground. Otherwise...GREAT landing.
jumped out of one a few times... biggest jump plane in my logbook. 80 people... stand yup walk around.... but, it takes for ever to altitude.
agreed!! AMAZING!!!
Awesome! He should have finished it off with a hand-brakey though :-)
I can remember those things flying over Melbourne.
Still had the luck when I was 14 to fly in a dc3 of Tropic air from Barbados to Tobago
Purrty good, fella
what is the ultimate DC3 record 300 meters or 984.25 feet seems a little long
You're right, each to his own. Your method would get into a tighter strip though. Bet your brakes lasted a lot longer too.
Amazing..!!! 😎
Impressive.
Beutiful landing!
Excuse my ignorance, but how does it take off again on such a short strip ??
It is unusual, I always thought a 3 point landing was the short field landing of choice as your air speed is very near or at stall speed when at the flair. I do concede that the DC 3 or Dakota is a very hard airplane to 3 point as it sits very low on the tail.
@royfearn4345

The rudder and elevators on a Dak landing are in the slipstream shadow of the mainplane and lose virtually all lateral control. This was a textbook landing. The only pilot we had who could totally master a Dak 3-pointer was our chief pilot, who was a former B of B Hurricane pilot.
Just one question ?... Can one do the same in a half loaded gooney ?????
First airplane I ever flew in back about 1950 when I was 6.
They also had floats for them.
Thanks
Amazing. I was always taught to land on 3 points on 2 wheelers. You mean apply full brakes while the tail is up ? How can you be sure you have enough elevator authority to counter the nose down moment created by the braking force applied to the (forward of CG) landing gear contact points ?

You land DC-3's on the mains, always, and stay up until the tail quits flying. That also goes for TO because the tailwheel is locked in both cases.
amazing
Esto fue en Puerto Rico? Was this in Puerto Rico?
Maybe the best drug smuggling aircraft ever built . Cool video and Thanks .
My hat goes off to the pilot. Those birds were heavy on the tail and he held it off long enough to make sure there would be no damage to the tail wheel. Good job!
