DBX 160 A SOUND DEMO

Here the infamous dbx in action, we refer to it as the bass monster.. Great at making that infamous hip hop 808, or putting the control needed over a bass line.. great piece of gear, and the bang for the buck is unbeatable

    Whenever the 808 kick or bass guitar would play I could hear a high frequency tone. Anyone else hearing this?

    Thanks for the vid. I have question. I need to record my Bass for solos and tracks, but I never seem to get that "tone" and "consistency" in volume with software plugins. I have a Jazz bass plugged to a 15W bass combo connected to 44VSL. What do I need in between to get that professional sound? It seems certain notes are very loud. Thanks!

    Eq and compression are the two tools that usually combat this also bass traps and good speakers to actually hear what is really going on

    When racking this type of equipment is it required to leave space between the equip with air vents on top? Every rack ive ever seen has been completely stacked but most of my equipment has the vents on top...

    I honestly don't know how you can beat the Dbx, but I also recommend the Warm 76, and warm 2a a lot of compressor for your money

    Listen to samples, they sound different. SSL has a sluggish, glassy punch and kind of driving oomph while this is tight and has fish on cardboard snap. So to speak.

    The DBX 160 modules are killer. They do a nice job on drums, just don't go over board with it.

    Have a DBX 266 in my studio that I found at a local guitar shop for $60 used. Really pleased with it on bass and drums. A lot of guys I've talked to said it's a pile of junk, but to each their own. I like DBX stuff for the most part.

    dbx created compression.. and the 160's have been a staple in the studio world for a while, hey if you like the dbx 266 roll with it.. it may be junk to them ya know

    Doug Jenkins DBX created comprssion? Even hear of Fairchild, or the old original LA2s from Teletronix? They were around LOOONG before DBX.....If you are going to try to be an expert, you may want to double check your facts before you sound like a tool....You sound like a tool.....

    "dbx knows compressors...after all we invented them!" straight from there homepage. Before you sound like a complete tool, maybe you should realize, your calling dbx a tool. And the simple fact, that your more concerned about the history of the piece, and proving me wrong, then actually helping the audio community become better, I forgive people like nicefish10, but I'd probably change your name..

    and just so happens, we get to use la2a's all the time, .. but not knowing the history, before slapping it on a vocal,, I will make sure to tell my clients this may change the sound quality a bit.. think about what your arguing man? The past? I'm done.. And yes Dbx invented Compression!

    as an engineer, how do you feel about using this before a BBE 882i (Sonic maximizer) in a chain for bass guitar??

  • @DougJenkins

    @DougJenkins

    +Sam Samaha I feel the Dbx 160A is one of the best Bass compressors for the money you can buy. As far as BBE, I would try it before and after the DBX, you may find, enhancing then compressing may give you more control in the stereo field. compress the enhanced signal as well, if it was me, I would run the bbe as a aux, so I had both signal to work with.. use the BBE as a effect, and use the dbx compressed signal as it's own beast.. I have really come to love the Neve recreation of the 1073 preamp for lunchbox, man the NEVE into the DBX would sound incredible..

    Hey Doug, my unit is coming, question: each sample was stereo ?? When you use Slave mode, do you just need to turn knobs on master unit ? It seems because you never touched the lower unit. If yes this slave mode is amazing (because non-digital stuff is also slaved). If so, I will order another soon ! Thanks. Felix.

    Seems there's at big lack of gain staging... everything sounds distorted... everything seems to just be limited instead of compressed. It looks as if everything has -10db + of gain reduction on it. I have a pair of these and they can be quite musical and sound great when used properly.. this video hardly does them justice.
