    They're quite expensive releases in the UK. I'm also wondering why they've gone for exact packaging as the blu ray. Could you not argue that it's lazy?

    Yeah, and pretty par for the course for most studios these days. This is the 3rd time they are using this package. It started with DVD.

    I never buy Criterion as they are really expensive in Canada but I had to day 1. It's my 1A/1B with All the President's Men as my all time favorites. Thanks for another great vid!

    I absolutely did pick this up and upgraded my criterion blu ray. First time I saw this film was fresh out of high school by a year I believe it was 4/20 Easter Sunday lit up and watched and fell in love and I always revisit every couple years for sure!

    Russ, you are indeed a principled man. Pink refuses to sign the sobriety note for the football coach and the 11 year old Russ instinctively knew it was the truth. 30 years later you won’t be quiet when a superstar like Tom Hanks speaks out of both sides of his mouth regarding his role in “Philadelphia”. We both agree : principles matter.

    I was a sophomore in high school in 1976 and this film is so spot on its scary...so many scenes I can relate to like driving around as a freshman with a bunch of older kids and smoking pot and drinking beer for the first time...getting home at 4am and trying to sneak in before my mom and dad woke up

    That is a good question, I thought about it more after watching this and the honest answer is... I'd be heartbroken to hear him just casually praise it or worse, not like it. This and a few other movies are so deeply rooted in who I am, it would just hurt. My answer while filming would be, I know Matt has seen 2 other Linklater films and it didn't seem like he cared that much. I know Dazed plays way broader than Before Sunrise, but there are still similarities. Basically, I don't think it would blow him away and I know his purchasing style. I think he should watch it (I may show him soon) but blind buying I couldn't recommend.

    I need to give this film another try. So much about it should be up my street, as it reminds me a lot of American Graffiti (just about a different generation) which I love, love 70s set movies, great cast, great soundtrack. I remember being cold on it for whatever reason

    Growing up in the UK, I had never even heard of this movie until I moved to Canada and I still haven't see it. Based on this vid, I'm certainly interested in picking this up. Hopefully there will be a Criterion flash-sale soon as their shipping cost is $23 for us suckers up north.

    My favorite hangout movie is The Big Lebowski but this is also special in its own right. I didn't know this was McConaughey's first movie role! what a natural. I have seen his debut on Unsolved Mysteries. He was part of a reenactment ...a young man who mowing the lawn and saw a shady guy trying to lure a kid away and intervened. He was shot and killed RIP.

    „Linklater confessed surprise at the unironic affection with which younger audiences embraced the movie and its trappings. “You know the way ‘Graffiti’ did kick off a nostalgia for the fifties?” he said. “I was thinking, O.K., there’s no way this film will ever kick off a nostalgia for the seventies. I’m going to make a film to show how the seventies kind of sucked, believe it or not, how kind of repetitious and boring all of it was-even though I guess I made it look too fun.” He laughed. “It was funny to realize, Oh, shit, people like this!” (The New Yorker March 23)

    It's good, I own it... but I do think the cast just didn't quite gel and in a film like that, chemistry is a necessity. I remember thinking it felt like the cast was aware they were in a "Dazed" type movie rather than feeling natural. Death Proof felt like that to me also, like the actors were hyper aware they're in a QT movie. Almost like they were doing Samuel L Jackson impressions.

    Absolutely one of my favorite movies. I remember seeing in the theaters with my brother and my dad and wanting to watch it every summer as a tradition. I wouldn’t watch it until summer because the movie got me so excited it would be to go back to school after watching this on a weekend. I just got my copy today at the criterion collection sale but it says Director cut on it and I’m wondering is this a different movie or just like the Richard supervised directors edition?

    @@KirkRedgate I remember for the longest time it wasn't on DVD here, maybe it released after I stopped looking. I always assumed it had something to do with the music rights, namely Sonic Youth. I grew up on that as well, watched it a ton in 10th grade (year it came out for me) but it was marketed way wrong. Every ad played like it was Dazed Part 2, when it was an Eric Bogosian play that gets dark. I'd pick up a blu or 4K day one if it released though.

  • @KirkRedgate

    @KirkRedgate

    @@russceasetheruss5360 Yeah quite possibly, hadn't occurred to me. I see Sonic Youth live at ATP Nightmare Before Christmas in 2006, that takes me back lol. I forgot they were on the soundtrack. I haven't watched SubUrbia in years. It's no surprise they tried marketing it as Dazed 2, trying to cash in. I discovered the film a bit later, around 2001 early college years. I see Slacker and Dazed a couple years before. I didn't know it was originally a play, that's cool.
