The very first NFL footbal game was played here in Dayton Ohio at Triangle Park. The Dayton Triangles played the Columbus Panhandles on October 3rd, 1920, and the Triangles won 14-0. Of course it wasn't called the NFL back then, but was later renamed. I think that is a fun fact you would like to know. If you ever come back to Dayton there is a sign in Triangle Park talking about it's history. Great video to! I am glad you and your wife had a great time in our wonderful city.

My husband grew up from his teen yrs on up on ridge ave. His parents owned a double on ridge btwn main/riverside n we have lived on tht side of twn off-on for 37yrs. We moved back over here in 2017 n live on east Beechwood n decided to buy the house 2yrs ago. My oldest son lives 5min up the road from us on heiks.

Born and raised in Dayton OH. It's nice to see people taking care of the Old Gem City.

@AlisaRed◇BandanaDashaVVV41 Brigades I can't answer that for you but Dayton has always been difficult finding work, and now the auto industry is a former shell of its self I can't imagine what it's like today, but Dayton wasn't a bad place to grow up, had/has its racial issues but some how has made it to today. I think alot about the Midwest and what can be done to transform its landscape but only good honest hardworking leaders will help that happen.

I don’t know if anyone else has mentioned, but Dayton is also the birthplace of the great actor, Martin Sheen.

I realize you've already left Dayton as I view this video....but if you didn't visit the National Air Museum at Wright Patterson AFB you missed one of the World's best museum. Any aircraft you could think of is there along with superb informational exhibits and even some interactive exhibits. All the military aircraft are there from WW! through the F-22 Raptor, F-15 etc. Also included are the aircraft our enemies flew in wars against us like WW1 German bi-planes.....German, Japanese and Italian aircraft of WW2....and even Soviet jets which is kind of surprising that they have..............hey, the SR-71 Blackbird is even there. If you love airplanes it can be a multi day adventure! We stopped with the kids in the early eighties....and the little whining crumb crunchers made us have to cut the visit way short...about an hour and a half. I was pissed.

Nice video! People forget that these Midwest manufacturing cities were what helped make the US so great and independent for a very long time. I grew up in Oakwood which is a suburb of Dayton. My father worked at the Delco plant in Dayton. I enjoy all the history and the architecture which Dayton has to offer. As a child the toy store at the old Rikes department store, which has been torn down, was one of my favorite places to visit. With the sharp economic decline, I left in the mid eighties and moved to Seattle.

Dayton has one of the best trauma centers in the region, Miami Valley Hospital that deserves a mention. Another hospital, Kettering Health is a level II trauma center and has a cutting edge heart hospital within the hospital. The hospital was founded by and is affiliated with Seventh Day Adventist Church. It's impressive for a city the size of Dayton.

My neice was in Kettering Health when she had heart problem. She came close to dying. They put her in a coma. They had to give her a pacemaker. I went to visit her. The hospital was really nice.

I went through cancer treatment for 2 years at Kettering network and they completely failed me and gave me 8 months to live with no hope, after all the wasted money and pain, I went to Ohio State, The James Cancer facility and had my last surgery and they did a surgery that Kettering would not do and it was successful and I'm cancer free, I give all the glory to God, Christ Jesus for being with me and being with the doctors hands and keeping me strong with Hope. Trust in Him for victory.

Re: Invented in Dayton Ohio. My favorite invention from Dayton, Ohio is Micro-encapsulation. Microencapsulation involves minuscule capsules filled with liquid. When the capsules are broken down, they release the liquid. You will be familiar with microencapsulation if you’ve ever used NCR (No Carbon Required) Paper-you know, the kind of paper that is used in receipt books, multi copy forms, etc. You can make a copy when you type or write on it without having to use messy carbon paper that saves a copy of your data for identity thrives. Microencapsulation was invented by NCR employee Barrett K Green in 1955. When it first became widely available in the ‘70s I thought it was so cool that it was invented by NCR (National Cash Register), and it was called NCR Paper (No Carbon Required). (I was young and easily impressed.) Microencapsulation’s most important use, though, is in the pharmaceutical industry for timed released medication.

I'm glad you mentioned the Dayton Arcade! The PBS channel has done a documentary about its Renovation---my husband is one of the actor's doing the voice over narration! 😊

To be honest, after reading the numbers on Dayton with the loss of manufacturing and population, I expected it to look bad. It absolutely did not, and in fact the downtown and areas around downtown looked beautiful.

The neighborhood near the hospital was heavily invested in by the hospital in the 1990’s to today. It was very dangerous in the 1980’s. The University of Dayton and Premier Health have invested a lot to bring those areas back and are rehabbing the old fairground neighborhood with more to be built directly across the street from Miami Valley Hospital ! We in Dayton are doing our best to invest in this awesome town! 😊😊😊

Cincy native here. Glad to see dayton getting some love. Over the years they have been trying to clean it up. Most of the rough spots are a little north of the city and across the river to the west. Always fun things to do during the summer.

Nice that you mentioned WKRP. I distinctly remember an episode where Andy tells the others he vacationed in Dayton. Les Nessman asked why and Andy said with emphasis, "I LIKE DAYTON." Les replied, with a wry smile, "Okaaaayyyyyyyy".

I live in Dayton, left for a decade or so and came back. It definitely isn’t what it used to be but I believe you gave a pretty fair assessment of our city. Dayton has a rich history of inventions that touch the lives of people to this day. A lot of music was made here also. Yes we have our issues but who doesn’t? Dayton was a great city to grow up in during the 60’s and 70’s. The Dayton Triangles played in the first game for what is now known as the NFL.

It's interesting to me that NCR has barely been mentioned here. It was a HUGE part of the city, and its identity, in the 20th century; contributed many inventions, supported the community in myriad ways (including recovery from the devastating 1913 flood.) It was gobbled up and scrapped out by corporate raiders, has no presence there now (other than the Credit Union?) but surely deserves recognition for the value it contributed to Dayton. As for the music scene, yes, there is so much history there people don't realize!

NCR, in fact, started there in the 1800's.

Dayton has some other history. The SunWatch Indian Village. Great place to visit. They discovered the old settlement when excavating the land for development. The have recreated the village and built a visitor's center. Celebrations, like Pow Wows, take place there.

Hey, you did a good job on my hometown! I lived in the Kettering area till I was 54 then moved to Colorado. Had you driven further north on Main St and further into the West side you would have seen some run down areas. I should have recommended you eat at the Pine Club! Superb steak house! You picked a really good example of a neighborhood that has been much improved in the last 10-15 years. The neighborhood behind the Oregon District was downright scary in the late 90’s and now it’s this clean and quaint blend of totally understated wealth and affordable apartments with real interest and personality. It’s a nice place to live.

@@coltonhurley2525 yeah, it needs some love over there. A lot of pretty houses too that you could tell used to have families taking care of them. They keep taking things away that made it better and ignoring the things people need. Crime city, baby.

I live in Dayton and man its pretty terrible at least the parts that I live in. my grandma has 3 trap houses on either side of her the road street 3 blocks away is on the news at least once a week for a shooting, as for the rest of our family dog bites, break ins, car theft, and jumpings are all relatively common. I see crackheads and drug dealers all the time its just normal. everyone talks about all the history but besides good hospitals for all the people who get hurt and or sick it really just sucks

Thank you for making these videos. I'm a Navy veteran that's visited over forty countries and 30 states. Your videos allow me to see as much of the US as possible.

Some of the great things about Dayton include the legacy of the Ketterings, the Schuster's, the Wright's,etc . The Dayton philharmonic youth orchestra is a fabulous opportunity for young aspiring musicians. They perform at the world class Schuster center, which is worth the trip to Dayton all by itself. The arts scene is struggling since COVID, as it is everywhere, but Dayton is such a right sized city it makes a night at the opera/ballet/orchestra very accessible.

My daughter played violin from elementary 3rd-gr til graduation(1999-2008) from "stivers highschool"..she was 1st seat in the orchestra in highschool. I remember they evn played at the Schuster center.

Dayton...maybe up into the 70s/80s was a major supplier of auto parts/systems for Detroit. Much of its economy was based on that and the auto industry, in general. If you drove around some more, you could have seen a few of the castles the executives of those companies lived in. My aunt got her MFA at the Dayton Art Institute and did interior designing for many of those places. Today, the big attractions in the area are the Air Force base and the Wright family mansion.

@@horseplop9 Fortunately, for Dayton, it benefits greatly from its location...and its population is unlikely to drop much below a 120,000 people. Essentially, it is an extension of Cincinnati and is between two fairly healthy state capitals (Columbus and Indianapolis). Lots of traffic goes through there and it makes for a nice suburban type area. Toledo, on-the-other-hand, is pretty much geographically doomed.

@@the_gilded_age_phoenix8717 I-75 (N/S) and I-70 (E/W) intersect on the north side of Dayton and you are correct about the traffic. That intersection is known as "The Crossroads of America".

I love to see those well kept old neighborhoods. My grandparents lived in a beautiful old neighborhood with community horse shoes played in a well kept, abandoned ally behind the homes. There were softball games on week ends and church on Sunday. They moved out as crime moved in. Their home became a drug house and the city of Cleveland tore it down. I park across from the empty lot periodically remembering how the city was then and the summers I and my cousins would stay at “The Big House.” Thank you for stirring the memory pot.

I think one of my favorite places in downtown is the Schuster Center. I've gone there many times to see musicals that come through, like the Lion King, Frozen (which was gorgeous btw, I was so impressed), Phantom of the Opera, Les Misérables, etc. It's a beautiful theatre but what I love the most is that the ceiling is designed to look how the night sky appeared on the eve of the Wright Brother's first flight. The stars sparkle and it's so thoughtful and well done.

I live in Fairborn and commute to Dayton everyday. I love this city. Riverscape and the riverwalk and the fountains are so beautiful and the Art Institute is incredible. Also, the Airfroce Museum is really cool. Yes there are many problems in this city but it is a great place to live. It gets an unfair shake and of course when you go to the worse parts of any city, it would appear that the city is bad. But if you go around Courthouse Square, Oregon District, and other parts you find it is quite lovely.

I live in Dayton. Moved here when I was 5. Spent a couple of years away but still here. The below ground abandon building you showed in Courthouse Square use to be a restaurant. It was a pretty nice restaurant but it never really got a lot of traffic. It's an unfortunate location. The Arcade which you mention is being revived after 30 years is actually on revival #3. It was getting a bit rundown when I was a teenager in the early 70s and closed. Then it was revived and was well patronized when I worked downtown in the late 70s and early 80s. Then it closed again. It was kind of revived once after that but didn't last. So now it's on another revival. I'm pretty sure my alma mater, University of Dayton has a hand in it. I hope this one sticks! There are a lot of people moving into downtown; especially younger people. Fingers crossed the Arcade can stay open!

Theres no money here, he said in the video on average we make HALF of the average. I moved here about 7 years ago, and it certainly hasnt improved during my time. Theres so many stuff addicts that the first batch of friends i made all died or went back to the streets, its insane here. Ive never been more isolated while surrounded by so many people

Born in Dayton. Left in 1985. Not the greatest place at that time. Moved to Florida and have lived there 38 years. Florida has become the state of tourists, retired New Yorkers, traffic and HEAT. City I live in had a population of 6,000 in 1980 and 114,000 in 2020. Moving back to the Dayton area to be with family once again. I survived 32 years of cold, and I can do it again. Dayton is still a nice city and it's on the way back again.

Currently living in Columbus, but I really wanna move back to Dayton. It’s a far better culture in my opinion, Columbus is too corporate for my taste. Specifically, I wanna move to Yellow Springs really bad. That’s my happy place

I’m from Dayton and work as a delivery driver in the area. The city really has improved in recent years. Lots of great restaurants and the Air Force museum among other things. My brother had his wedding at the Masonic temple.

Dayton has had a resurgence in the last few years. It's gotten better.

At 20:05 the aqua house and the pink or coral house looked liked coordinated cuteness as far as color goes. And the ducks made up for the no cat sighting.

We moved to Dayton in 2019 (Fairborn, actually) and still live there. In addition to your great review, folks should realize the large number of beautiful, expansive parks and the preponderance of bike trails (approx. 153 miles, IIRC). The city offers a lot...continual fairs and events from spring to fall and a vibrant arts scene. I welcome everyone to visit our new home!

I grewup in Fairborn. My dad was in the Air Force. I was born at WPAFB in 1956. At 15 we moved to Southern Ohio when my dad retired. I moved to SW Florida at 25 and moved back to Ohio when I was 50. My sister and her family live in Dayton.

I grew up Ohio also....in Dayton on east side which is now called south park. My daddy was in the navy n retired too bt we moved here from San Diego Cali in 1974 which I was 4yo. My parents bought a home in Cali where me n my older brother both were born n r 2 older sisters were born in Norfolk Virginia & wash dc. Im the baby of 4. My daddy was the cook on the ship n deployed alot 6mon-1yr at a time. We only moved to Ohio bc our gma was sick n dying other than that we NVR soda came here. My mama was full blood Irish born n raised strait from northern Ireland she met my daddy while he was overseas on ship. I remember as a kid going to the hospital on base...I was a clumsy child still clumsy. I started/ended preschool in a cast...started/ended kindergarten in cast on crutches. Im real bad pegeon-toed like my daddy. I also remember going to the commisary/exchange as a kid...I still have my ID. We also gta daug that did 10yrs in air force n daughter law that did 8yrs in air force by now in the reserves. I will say I remember my momma sayin the military base drs/hospital suck bc she eventually gta family Dr off base. Also my son n daughter law said same thing wen my 10yo grandson was a baby. Hoping to move out of Dayton one day into the country.

Sad the hospital you were born in no longer exists...but yes, things are slowly coming back.

My sister lives in Dayton. I was born at WPAFB in 1956. Grewup in Fairborn, Ohio. As kids our mom would take us to downtown Dayton to Rikes. We would go shopping and have lunch. Those were such great times.

The area around the Old Courthouse, was Courthouse Square. It was packed full of shops such as Elder Beerman, Rikes, restaurants,etc. At lunch time it would be full of people and the fountain would be running. Dayton has declined horribly in the last 20-25 yrs. Downtown council is trying to rebuild and bring in younger crowd. Many old buildings have been turned into gorgeous apartments/lofts. And lots of bars, coffee shops, etc. The major attractions are Dayton Dragons baseball team and musicals, ballets at the Victoria theatre and Schuster Center. Try Flying Pizza next time you come through. Be careful on outskirts of downtown.

Hell wen I moved in my house 8yrs ago on one side there was 4 abandon in a row n they had on abandon for 8yrs befor. Now there's only one which is rite nxt door....they tore one dwn...fixed up one slip by still empty n Sumone bought the other n fixed it up. The one rite nxt to me....neighbors said it was a generation owned home n the woman owed n died in there then one of dsnt got on drugs started prostituting up st...other daughter moved away...husb jus left the house sitting with dog in there no food or water n neighbor called cops n this was the early 2000s n it had on sitting cotton away 8yrs b for we moved in 2017 n its still sitting there with all kinds of wild animals in there. We've called the city more times than we count. Bt I do like my street....mostly older people n own their hms. We gta gud deal on r house n was already living here 5yrs wen she decided to sell it. Eventually wanna move to country by for now I'm content!

I was born in Dayton late 40s and moved away when I was 15, then lived there again for most of the 80s. I would consider moving back because of low cost of living, but I hate Ohio politics. Enjoyed the video.

I work for a sign company in Dayton and I’ve seen pretty much the entire city. What I see on a daily basis definitely does not look like what you showed. Those were just the nicer areas.

Amazing video as always!

Lived in Dayton my whole life. It has definitely came a long way over the years. Riverscape, the metro parks and Woodland Cemetery are all great places to visit. The big downside is the Dayton Public school system. Having a young child that will start school in a few years is why I'm looking to move to a neighboring city like Kettering or Centerville.

I lived there in the 70s out by the airport. I was a lot of fun back in the day. Two shopping malls an entertainment venue called Hara Arena I think...hosted great shows. Lots of movie theaters too. Downtown was great during Christmas with the department store windows all decorated up.

Born and raised there and left in 1967 and never wanted to go back.....The most exciting thing to do on Friday night was setting on the porch watching the car rust......Vegas is my home....

Thanks for sharing the roads and cities less traveled here in the US. I'm building a list of towns/points of interests/places I'd like to visit myself that you've showed us on this channel. Keep up the great work!! I've been to Cincinnati many times but never Dayton. Time to add it to my list!

I guess it was too cold to count pedestrians... thanks for getting out there again for us in the freezing cold!! 🥶 Dayton looks nicer than I thought it would.

Don't forget what the University of Dayton brings to the city. They have bought many derelict houses to rehab to rent to students. With UD owning the neighborhood, the vacancy and crime rate plummeted. The University has also brought medical and tech businesses to town.

Yep - Also Sinclair Community College, Wright State, and The Air Force Institute of Technology bring a lot of educated people to the area. I used to live around Dayton and enjoyed my time there. The areas around Dayton, Beavercreek, Kettering, etc are pretty nice.

Arguably the best time to visit Dayton is between August and October. Christmas is also a great time to visit for the Christmas tree lighting.

It would be great to see you interview locals about the towns and cities you visit to get a firsthand opinion of the area. Dayton is surprisingly nice and is much better than most cities iv'e seen on here and would rank in my top 5 list.

Are you kidding! Dayton is ranked 5 in the country as the most dangerous to live in. It's a crap hole.

I live here. Honestly, there is a small portion of Dayton that I would consider "dangerous". As high as that crime stat is, it is contained to pretty much one part and it's not even a huge area by far. It's honestly the poorest part of the city. I honestly feel safe going anywhere in Dayton, because the majority of crimes, are personal amongst the victims and perps. It's hardly just random people minding their business being attacked. I just wish there were more recreational things to do. There used to be a lot, but so many things have shut down and a lot of funding got lost. Honestly, that seems to go hand and hand with the rise in the crime rate. I loved growing up here, but in modern times it's just not enough here for entertainment any more.

I’m from Dayton and it is on the rise. A lot of this has all been freshly made nice. They have been working on it for a few years and are doing a great job. Organ District is so pretty at night on the weekends. They block off the road and all the restaurants bring tables and light out.

14:24 when your camera panned towards the adult shop in the Oregon I already knew what was coming, people always think that’s gonna be a movie theater until they read whatever they got up on that sign😂 Happy to see someone checking out the city!

The Wrights also had a bike shop and printing shop that still stand in town. The bike shop with the museum I believe is either the 3rd or 4th they had, but the printing shop is original. They were the only ones who printed African-American writer Paul Lawrence Dunbar, a fellow Dayton native. Those shops are along a history trail in Dayton, and is very much worth the walk during the spring/summer. Born and raised in the suburbs near by, and love your take on it. Nice to see Dayton from a positive perspective, especially given their issues with drugs and crime. Great work, and I'll have to check that tavern out 😂

I think you would have seen a 180 if you would have went out Salem Ave to the NW or anywhere beyond any of the historic districts that are immediately adjacent to Downtown.

​@@Me97202Hmm pretty sure Dayton voted Democrat since Hector was a pup. The entire 1-75 corridor is pretty blue. You only give away so much of other peoples money before they leave.

Lived near Dayton in the late 80's. We avoided the town then because of its questionable reputation and the high crime. 😟

Diane, keep in mind that the metro Dayton area is officially around 850,000. There are over 1 million people living within a 25 mile radius of downtown Dayton, so it's not as small as the official numbers for Dayton proper.

@@mattthornton8474 I doubt I'd ever want to live in such a crowded area. I'm not even comfortable in this town. I'd much rather live in a much smaller town. I was comfortable in a national park, you could hear yourself think.

WOW! Dayton Ohio has so much history, people and happenings! Just wow! Yep, that was impressive, educational and informative. With that said, my wife has ALWAYS taken pride on how our house looks compared to others, but never went TOO far. For me, I like open, CLEAN spaces, in the front and backyard, and I always like a clean basement and garage. That said, my wife is a hoarder, to a manageable extent. She loved Estate Sales. LOL. Your videos are getting better and better. Thank you, sir!

Our Uncle's family was there back in 1940's. Our son graduated from the University of Dayton in 2019. Yes it has bad areas, but we had no issues.

LOL, I just about fell out of my chair when you read that sign! I used to be stationed at WPAFB in the mid 80's. It was pretty busy but was know for the high crime even back then. I lived right off base in Fairborn and it was a pretty small town for a base that big.

I was born in Dayton in 1957 and our family moved out of state in a community comparable to Germantown, Ohio. I recall its glory days of beautiful architecture buildings in downtown Dayton, with so many places to visit, including bustling malls. In the early 70’s, things turned for the worse in Dayton with crime and most our neighbors moved away. Our new home was also home to many people who left Dayton for a better job and community.

Updated...Another Great Video! PLEASE be careful on the road, the weather so far this year has been nuts. Today was crazy. We ended up in the basement because of a Tornado warning (IL) In Belvidere IL, at Apollo Theater during live concerts, the roof caved in (Prayers!), and there were dozens (Tornado warmings, etc.) across the US just today (Arkansas, Illinois, Iowa, Wiscon, Mississippi, Tennessee, etc.). Joey, Map out your routes carefully, we want you around, and the weather is CRAZY! 🙂 Can't wait for your next video. Peace and Safe Travels.

I have lived here my whole life. I really enjoyed your video. Although you made Dayton look better than it is. Most of those office building's are empty and the West & East side of Dayton is in bad shape compared to the South side... I think I will also try that restaurant too. I drive by it all the time.

@@JoeandNicsRoadTrip Just like all city's their are very rough areas. And Dayton has a few. Don't get me wrong, Dayton is not all bad but it's nothing like it was when I was a kid and teenager growing up here in the 80's & 90's.

Dayton used to be fun. Downtown had the hustle and bustle of NYC, in the 60s and 70s. I hope you got to see the Oregon district. That's where you want to be after dark. Live jazz, great food, lots of people...😊

I was born in Dayton in 1957. Moved from there by the time I was 7. We lived in a poor neighborhood on the east side. I didn’t realize it had lost so much of its population.

Born and raised just north of Dayton, Great little (big) city, I just left recently perusing a job and a lady. Recommend that you stop by Wright Patterson Air Force Base and Dayton Metro Parks. The Violent crime is likely due to the I75 - I70 being so very close and a huge drug and human trafficking location.

Recently moved from Dayton after 4.5 years. Really loved the town, quiet and peaceful
