Man, me too.. I only remember the theme, back in the days you had to get up to change the channel, but didn't and so instead found other real life activity, as opposed to now where we just flick facebook around to get new content.. but those were carefree days.... god .. you know the drill.. if I knew then what I know now, I'd not be who I was then, and not be who I am now. Might be better... it surely cannot be worse. I mean... I am fascinated by one of the arquette sisters, but I just cannot work out which one.. they're both wonderful and.. horn inducing. Gah, I have said too much.. erase this from your eyes. I just cannot.. Medium is on. oO

Honestly, who could ever forget this unforgettable intro phrase for this soap opera-"Like sands through the hour glass, so are the days of our lives." I was never a soap watcher either, but I do remember this while growing up as a kid in the 1970s.

Days of Our Lives was my aunt's favorite soap since the 70's. My aunt passed away last February. I've been afraid of hearing the intro and watching the hourglass rotate from side to side, I've been afraid of the emotion that would come with it. I miss this time. A time when my brothers and I would spend our summer days over at my aunt's flat in Toronto. Back then she was a receptionist during the day, so she would leave my brother and I in charge of recording Days of Our Lives everyday on her VHS tapes. She could be tired as hell, sick as hell, looking like hell- as long as her armchair was available and placed perfectly in view of the television screen- all was well. Days of Our Lives was first aired on NBC in 1965, and managed to keep it's notorious 1 PM slot for almost half a century. From the initial premiere of this daytime soap, all the way up until the day she passed a few months ago, my aunt has not a missed a single episode. My aunt was an angel. My aunt was a fairy. My aunt was the most precious, sweet, genuine lady I've ever known. She had a humor like no other, she had such a benevolent soul, and she raised my mother when they were growing up. She was my mom's best friend. She was my mom's confidant. She was my mom's safe haven. She was my mom's laughter. She was my mom's light. She was my mom's everything. The funeral was in late February. It was the first funeral I'd been to since I was five. It was the first time reality sunk in. The sand in the hourglass was starting to run out, and I came to a dreary realization. The sand through the hourglass is all our days, all of our liveliness, all of our obstacles and forgotten responsibilities- no matter what the sand will always be running out. Everything has a hidden hourglass on it, no matter what everything must gradually deteriorate. It all must come to an end. I miss my aunty. I never saw the sand go out of her hourglass. I never saw her laying in her death bed. A blessing in the dark. For when rainclouds and gloom creep it's way into my existence, I can shut my eyes and imagine my angelic aunt upright laying out on the beach, her Soaps fully taped and her glass filled with rum, screaming obscenities into the distance. Like sands through the hourglass, so are the days of our lives. I never thought those 11 words could contain so many memories. I never thought my aunt would become a memory. She's the most angelic memory in all the lands, can't think of anything more beautiful.

God that theme and jingle is burned in to the brain. It was inescapable in the 80s. Everywhere I went if I was at someone's house at the right, or wrong time I should say. Neighbors, friends house, relative, if the show was airing, chances where high that someone in the house was watching and I'd hear that intro. I think that was the main reason I wanted to stay outside.

My sister and I used to spend a lot of our summers with my grandparents. I t was a long time ago. At the time, my grandfather was still working...not yet retired. My grandmother would get him up by 5:00 AM and fix breakfast (it smelled so good I would go ahead and get up too). This must have been back in 1970-72, because my grandfather retired in 1974. I remember my grandmother cleaning kitchen spotless, hoovering rug, laundry, and getting lunch set up. THEN...after my grandmother did her housework she would sit down for about 20 to 30 minutes just to watch this soap opera. I remember the introduction with the big hourglass...and the theme song...and narrator. I actually logged onto KZread to find the intro, because my sister asked me only yesterday...."what was the name of that soap opera that grandma used to watch in the 70's." She thought it was "The Young and Restless"...I said no....think it was "General Hospital". I asked my 85 year old mother..."Which soap opera always had the introduction with the big hour glass"? That's how we finally figured out..."it was DAYS OF OUR LIVES"! Classic! Good memories...love it!

Everytime I lied about being sick and going to elementary school, my mom would watch ATWT, DOL, and Y&R soap and then I knew its lunch time or 11am because The Price is Right will be on. Today, I feel like cell phones and internet took a lot of the carefree, magic and fun away from a lot of kids today. Such a pity. 😥😥😥😥

Apparently this and guiding light were my grandma's favorite shows that she watched constantly. I never got to meet her but when I see this (or listen to Glenn Campbell) I think about her. I wonder if she would have liked below deck
