that's what you get when you choose a mage. raiding as a mage: 'frost bolt. frost bolt. frost bolt.' If you want a REALLY fun experience, try playing a tank - just dungeon tanking is like you're playing a piano (for example at Scarlet monastery level). You can get away with by doing less as a tank, but if you want to fully utilize all the possibilities and potential of a warrior tank, you're literally a concert pianist. But you have to be really skilled, diligent, and disciplined to find all the ways you can gain extra performance as a warrior-tank. An example, dungeon tanking: (mark targets: skull, cross) switch 2h, berserk stance, berserk rage, battle stance, charge, sweeping strikes, berserk stance, whirlwind, defensive stance, switch to 1h+ shield, sunder armor, cleave, etc. That is just an example of an opener as a warrior.

Yeah, the feeling of not having a clue of what was to come was a powerful one and increasingly difficult to get these days. It wasn't unique to World of Warcraft but the scale of the game and the hype leading up to it really amplified that feeling. I remember playing as human and my GF playing as night elf and just getting to each other was a grand adventure.

Despite 100 noob friendly adjustments and hand holding blizzard has done in the past 20 years, he was completely lost because at every corner of every street in SW City you have 12 sparkly things from 10 expansions fighting for your attention, while you are on the intro level story quest line. A lot of it has to do with being a nobody adventure trying to find your way while wandering the world and visiting quaint little towns, also the world is inherently dangerous due to limitations of your character. Vanilla WoW was focused around creating a world rather than a series of zones that were merely backdrops for flashy quest events. This led to the common complaints of quests being boring "kill ten rats" or fetch quests but paradoxically those boring quests were better at immersing you into the world than the Cataclysm and on style of more involved quests. Why exactly this is I'm not sure. Maybe it is because it gives a sense that the world has been going on before you and will keep going on after you've passed through.

The thing that stayed most with me from that game is the sound and music design which transport me right back. It makes spells and hits feel like they connect, the ambient sound in quiet moments is immersive and the epic soundtrack changing between epic and contemplative ist just fantastic. Having Mulgore open up to me after leaving Camp Narache with my first MMO character will be forever burned into may brain. And what Sean says about missing quest guidance and being rewarded for exploration is so true. I played through Skyrim and Oblivion, but by the end more so I can say that I finished the main quests. I never finished Morrowind due to bugs, but let me tell you there are so many moments I can remember from this game and I listen to some tracks from it (and from WoW) to this day. One day I will find the time to play either Morrowind or WoW: Classic again, maybe this time, with one or both of my kids...

Truly 'atmosphere' remains elusive for so many game developers. So many games I have played have fallen flat despite cool mechanics, deep interesting gameplay, cinematics, etc. because they can't make all of that come together correctly to create a great atmosphere. Music, soundscape and correct art direction is so often underestimated while fidelity, loudness and demanding graphics gets overemphasized. WoW, beyond its scale, is a great example. Perfect choice of music (chilling in elwynn forest compared to visiting glorious stormwind) and timeless grapichs because the art direction is so strong. Love it!

I loved the part about programming principles and stuff. I am self taught and have a lot of friends studying programming in university. I always argue with them the second they see my code. They get it so hammered in them that everything needs to be up to code its crazy. I kinda get it for huge team projects, but people tend to go too far in their quest for perfection.

I, too, can have my productivity tanked by elegant code, but I think elegant code is so neat in the same way that an elegant math proof is neat, so I'll probably never change. I like the xkcd quote, "I find that when someone's taking time to do something right in the present, they're a perfectionist with no ability to prioritize, whereas when someone took time to do something right in the past, they're a master artisan of great foresight." :P This captures the dilemma in my heart.

There’s definitely layers to it. I was really into Haskell in college but as much as I love Haskell, what some would call elegant is abstracted beyond all reasonable sanity. Like it’s cool that you can solve the problem in a way that’s generic over the abstract concept of the shape of the structure of the data and that you can write it in a point-free style but if I have to debug or change that mess I’m going to get mad. Extremely simple code that is optimized for reading and has the fewest surprises per line of code and is obviously correct has an amazing elegance all its own.

Easiest was to strafe (at least for me) was always to just hold down the right mouse button which locks your camera and then use a and d as they were originally bound.

It's so fascinating to see someone completely fresh trying to get to grips with MMO controls. For so many of us, all the idiosyncrasies of selecting targets, using abilities, etc. is pretty much muscle memory at this point, so it's easy to forget that there are people, who've no idea how all that works.

Getting backseat gamed at the beginning was definitely a large part of the experience for my friends and I. None of us picked it up on our own, we were all brought in by other people who really wanted us to make sure we played it. Also, I am surprised that Sean hasn't read "The WoW Diary"; where Staats goes into a lot of the game design process on making the game. Maybe he wanted to experience the game before reading it.

Fun thing about the movement. I never rebound strafe keys nor do i ever use A and D to turn but i've gotten so used to this setup now that i could never bind anything else to those buttons because i fear that that would probably make me play like a total beginner again for whatever reason, forgetting everything else that i've learned in my 15 years of playing this game.
