Day Trip to Mount Diablo

Go on a road trip with Jeff and Sarah from Modesto to beautiful Mount Diablo ... and have a little fun on the way as Sarah teases Jeff about his "bad" driving.

When I was younger I used to be a Ham radio operator. I had to use the Mount Diablo repeaters to talk to someone in the Bay area. Thanks both of you for showing me the top of the mountain; I've never walked the area.

I loved this video! I’m starting with your first ones and moving forward. I didn’t know that you started 5 yrs. ago, Jeff! The beginning of your video - reading about Mt. Diablo, was great!!! The ending was masterful, complete with crickets, dog barking, and garage door closing! And, every scene was fun to watch. I’m a coffee and Diet Pepsi addict on a day trip, too! Happy Trails, you two! 🥰😎

I think that was just a little experimentation with making a video five years ago. It's very quirky but it gave birth to History Hunters though. Thanks for being such a great (and expressive) fan. PS I really am a good driver, Sarah just doesn't think so! LOL

I've been up my fair share of California summits, twice up Half Dome, amongst them. Down in Ventura County, there's Mt. Pinos in the Los Padres National Forest. I walked up that one, one time, and it was so clear that, honest-to-goshers, amongst the mid-elevation forest belt of the Sierra, I actually could spot Sequoia groves, 130-150 miles across The Valley. You could see those tiny (at that distance) domed crowns looming above all of the other species of pines and firs.

Very nice!....love the banter about who's the better driver! I found this site about two weeks, ago (August 2022) and have been entranced by the presentation and the history of the locales visited. From November 1947 to November 1959 I lived in Lafayette on the three acres now bordered by 3rd Street and the "Briones to Las Trampas" walking path.....across Lafayette Creek from the Rigney Bros. (yes, Bill Rigney, of the Giants, and his brother) Tile Company. Back then, we could clearly see Mt. Diablo and the navigation beacon that would be illuminated on December 7th and, if I correctly recall, on a few occasions such as New Year's Eve. In the rock on Mt. Diablo can be found much evidence of sea critters (snails, etc.) that were petrified in what was millions of years, ago, the sea floor. On the backside (North) are the old coal mines that fed the industry, steam locomotives, and homes of the Bay Area (until the advent of fuel oil and natural gas). Many of these mines are now either sealed or fenced off as being too dangerous to inspect.

Haven't been to Mt. Diablo in, oh, 40 years or more. I saw a display that showed a photograph of Half Dome in Yosemite Valley taken on a clear day. Just by luck, it was a windy spring day and clear; even luckier, I had a 10 x 50 binoculars in my trunk and, sure enough, I could see it!

  • @jamesminear2336

Missing some History here Jeff ... as a kid I was there 2 times.. tried to take my kids in the 90s but the trick is to go in the spring after a rain storm on one of those real clear days! But it snowed on Diablo and there were multiple accidents before we got there and closed down the road. I can’t remember everything About Diablo but when I was there you see all the way to Shasta and Lassen to the North and the Grapevine to the South! Of course all the Sierra’s to the East and all the Bay Area to the West! There’s history of how Meridian lines were drawn from up there and for Yolo County how the county roads were laid out! For TV and radio there’s history too! I know one radio station had there antenna up there and the FCC made them take it down as only a few stations were granted the 50,000 watt license... KFBK in Sacramento being one and still one of the only with that much power!! I would love to go again someday but those clear days a rare and trying to beat the Bay Area people there impossible

Sara doesn’t seem to enjoy a lot of the cemetery visits which is to bad for her. Nancy Kelsy(sp) is buried in Cuyama Valley way back off the road behind an house. Amazing story there. You should go visit that site. I’m starting from the beginning and working my way to the current videos.

You spoke briefly in this episode with a lady from Benicia. The town of Benicia was the capitol of California for a year starting in 1853 and the building is still there and availlabe to tour. Also just outside of town is the site of the Benicia arsonal and barracks from the same era. There is also a military cemetery that is very well kept and has a few interesting individuals buried there. I don't know if it's worth a drive from Modesto but could be interesting if you happen to be going by on your way to another destination.

Jeff and Sarah , Did you know that Mt. Diablo can be seen from the TAO house of Play write Eugene O'Neal ? His house was built on the side of a large hill in Danville Ca I have visited the TAO house by hiking up from nearby Alamo trails and onto the property. There are guided tours given by national Parks people on a scheduled time base. The parking of cars is not allowed up near the house so you have to take a bus to get up there or,...go the scenic route, and hike your butt up there from either Alamo or from the Danville side and into Las Tramps park. The Danville entry's is form Remington Loop road. The first part of the entry is a bit steep for beginner hikers . Print out a map from an online trail map of Las Trampas ridge area, Look to see the names of the trails. Take the Las Trampas Ridge trail over to the TAO house.

Honestly, you two; when together, you remind me of Nick and Nora Charles; all you need now, is a mischief-minded Fox, Airedale, or Lakeland Terrier, who's like Asta! All of those are really sweet dogs to have around. No matter who's driving, you just can't help swaying with the mountain twisties. You ought to try the Priest's Grades on the 120 to Yosemite, which, I'm fairly sure, you actually ARE familiar with, or the 198's Amphitheatre Grade from Three Rivers into Giant Forest in Sequoia National Park. And, don't forget; if you're watching "Cool-Hand Luke", for the umpteenth time, you just might be able to catch Mount Diablo, if you squint or peer hard enough, but I think the cinematographer picked some fairly hazy days to obscure the mountain.

I'm a little late in finding this video. But I wanted to make a comment about the historic airplane crash on the north face of Mt. Diablo. You probably never heard of it. I wrote a story about it many years ago for a book I wrote. I can't remember all the detail now, but it was a Army C-45 twin engine airplane that took off from Oakland airfield. I can't remember the date, but I think it was late in the 1940's. Most of the wreckage is still up there. I visited the site about 20 years ago. It was interesting to see. And made for a sad story.

Wow,..... you missed the most important and prominent aspect about Mount diablo base and meridian where prominent peaks were selected to be established as Initial survey Points, and establishment of base elevation bench marks to then establish base-lines and meridians for land survey all over Northern Calif. & Nevada were drawn from this point, as its visibility from great distances aided the surveyor’s task. Such was the case with Mount Diablo, an isolated mound rising above the surrounding valley, east of the San Francisco Bay area. In 1851 it was selected to be the Initial Point for the federal land surveys for northern California and Nevada. All property lines are based on this prominent survey point. www.clui.org/section/mount-diablo-meridian
