Abandoned Cooperstown & Warnerville where Hollywood Classics were Shot

Jeff takes this episode of History Hunters to the eastern edge of Stanislaus County where the abandoned settlements of Cooperstown and Warnerville where Hollywood stars Gary Cooper, Grace Kelly, Errol Flynn, Olivia de Havilland, Burt Reynolds, Ryan and Tatum O'Neil and others filmed some significant movies.
This episode also visits the small Maxwell Family Cemetery between the two locations.

It's hard to believe we're closing in on a century since these films were made. Westerns left a mark on me. Growing up in GA, I always dreamed of going out west. I was thrilled when the Air Force sent me to out West. I never left. The shot of Gary on his horse, with the hill in the background. Goose bumps moment! If those hills could talk and tell of us of all that have passed there, be it native Americans to the early days of film... Great job on this one!

I love the history and old pictures. I tried to make acorn bread once. It's a long process. You have to boil the acorns repeatedly to get rid of the tannins, which makes them bitter. Then, when their completely dry, you grind them. I had a range, oven, and coffee grinder. You can appreciate how hard it was without electricity. Another great video!

Valid point, I Agree. There's a lot of blame to go around. As my sister, a psychologist who began practicing nearly 46 years ago, mentioned. There was a significant shift in the care of the mentally ill since the mid-1980s - and it hasn’t been for the better. After the Deinstitutionalization movement began in California in the 1960s, so many state mental health hospitals closed, forcing many folks who needed a lot of care onto the streets. Without those facilities, many mentally ill people ended up in jails and prisons which are not set up to provide safe, compassionate care for brain illnesses. But in 1981, when Reagan deinstitutionalized the mentally ill and emptied the psychiatric hospitals into so-called “community” clinics, the problem got worse. much, much worse. Another great episode, Jeff. Thanks

Always a pleasure to see Sierra #3 that the State of California owns and has preserved and operating at Railtown 1897 in Jamestown. The state was to shut down the attraction, but a letter-writing campaign performed by school-aged children caused Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to relent and breathe new life into that state park. William Frazier Cooper was also a Mexican War veteran as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army 16th Infantry, and Cooperstown was on the south end of his Rock River Ranch and a half mile from Cooper's ranch house. His homestead of 160 acres was his home base for the grazing of cattle and hogs over 2000 acres. He had previously come to California to mine and worked his way down to Sonora before settling in the Tuolumne County area of his ranch in 1858 that is now Stanislaus County. He lived in Buena Vista, the high-priced 'suburban' area, across the Stanislaus River from Knight's Ferry. Buena Vista, also, no longer exists. Cooper's saddest period of his life came after a serious fall that caused a severe concussion. The incident caused him to shoot and stab his wife, Levinia, to death 27 Nov 1867. He was committed to the Stockton Insane Asylum the following month, but paroled a year later. He continued to ranch on his property for another 35 years. One of my 2nd great-grandfather's neighbors..... Thanks for continuing to bringing new 'old life' to this area that is rich in history!

I think that Jeff is well aware of Sierra #3 and Railtown 1897. If anybody is a Californian or coming to the Gold Region of California, please take the time to visit Jamestown and our 'state' railway. Sierra #3 is very well documented on KZread, but, if Jeff wanted to take it on, the history of the railcars with THEIR movie heritage, would be fantastic! Always new challenges at this state park. Please..... keep it alive.

Not knowing who gets what on their paid channels..... Sierra Railroad #3 is the lead-in to "Tales of Wells Fargo" with Dale Robertson during its B&W years in the 1950's. Lots of scenes around the area Jeff showed today. I think it's the best example of how that steam locomotive operated in its heyday. It's treated much more like an elder grandpa today even though the boiler has been replaced and overhauls done as required by the FRA.

Spent a lot of time out in that area with my dad. He worked for the road department and he spent a lot of time in that area of the county. I wonder what the view looked like from those grind holes in the early 1800s. Back then it was probably a vast oak forest but given the two creeks on either side of the road the native village was probably right there and from that point the women could watch over the village. Back in the 90s my family went metal detecting at the old windmill/tree a little down the road from those graves. Found tons of sheep sheers and other tool remains. Seemed to be a old barn in the location along with the foundation of a house. At the house site we found a thimble and sad iron.

@@jbenziggy That's what I'm thinking since the place was a quarter mile up the road on the same side as the graves. Side note, that incline by the tracks was probably used to load grain into trains. Also along the ridge of the old house site there's a bunch of caves and evidence of habitation. Soot stains on the ceilings as one of the signs. Use to wonder with my dad about who use to stay up there. From natives to possibly sheep shepherds watching over the flocks.

I so enjoyed this! Grew up in Modesto and drove out Warnerville Road to check it out-but never knew about the cemetery. I’ll visit next time I’m there. Beautiful shots of the hills I loved that very often appeared in my dreams. Thank you so much for this bit of history!

What a great episode! I’m so glad these old movie locations are being “preserved” for future generations. That hill with the grinding holes looks a lot like Indian Grinding Rock State Historic Park, wich I visited a long time ago. These classic movies will always be popular. High Noon is one of my top 5 favorite movies of all time!

I don't think I have ever written to you before, but I would just like to say you haven't put out a video I didn't like. I love the one's like this where movies from the past were filmed. I love visiting, through your video's, the movie places from the past where and how they have changed and look today. And while I am here, my most favorite one was when you visited the place where the movie' Shane' was filmed. And as usual 'Shane' was one of my favorite movies. There wasn't much left there when you were there and probably less now, but I loved it and still watch it occasionally. And if you ever get the chance, I wish you could visit it again. Thank you so much for your wondaful video's.
