Day Trip to Amarillo 🥩 (FULL EPISODE) S4 E12
THROWBACK EPISODE - This episode originally aired on PBS on June 6, 2013. Some of the locations may have changed. Check thedaytripper.com for the most up-to-date information.
As they say “Step into Real Texas.” This city may be a long haul for many Texans, but it is worth the drive and full of all kinds of classic sights that Texans need to see.
Amarillo was built on beef, and the cattle industry is still the lifeblood of town. Yet, it takes more than cows to have a successful ranch, so head to the America Quarter Horse Hall of Fame & Museum to learn about the most popular horse breed in the world and the one that makes ranching happen. In the Hall of Fame, you’ll see both the horses and men that have made a significant impact on the cattle industry.
The decades of the cattle drives gave way to decades of cross-country drives on America’s “mother road” - Route 66 which passed through Amarillo. You can visit some vestiges of this era in the Historic Rte 66 District,
Explore the way folks used to travel in style at The RV Museum. See what used to be the “latest and greatest” of travel technology back in the good old days from silver bullet trailers to epic hippie vans, and take a walk down memory lane.
This is a classic Texas must-see spot. It was built in 1974 by art group “Ant Farm” on billionaire Stanley Marsh’s property, and over the years, it has become a tourist sensation. Stop by Cadillac Ranch to see these awesome rainbow-colored Cadillacs sticking out of the ground, and be sure to bring your spray paint to leave your mark! Be sure to check out the other strange artwork in Amarillo, the “Huge Pair of Legs” (which is exactly what it sounds like…)
If you’re the type that thinks the Panhandle is nothing but flat earth - you are WRONG! And a trip to Palo Duro Canyon State Park is a must. This is officially the second largest canyon in the U.S. There is tons of hiking available, but I recommend a mountain bike ride to the Lighthouse, which is truly one of the most beautiful sights in Texas.
If you can make it to “Amarillo by Morning” then you must stop in at Youngblood’s Stockyards Cafe which serves an amazing breakfast and is attached to Amarillo’s historic stockyards. On Mondays you can even catch a live auction. And if it’s neither Monday nor a morning, you can still get a good burger or a steak.
The other food joint you MUST check out is the Big Texan Steak Ranch, where they give out FREE 72oz steaks - but there’s one small catch - you’ve gotta eat it in one hour, along with a table full of sides. Good luck!

Born and raised in Amarillo! It's crazy I came across this video. You can be in and out of Amarillo in about the same length as this video😂😂
Born and raised in Amarillo, left there at age 24 now in Arizona but always proud of my Amarillo roots. Nice people.
As a native of Amarillo, I’m glad you enjoyed your visit! This video summed up the stereotypical things. We also have a thriving arts community, a great dining scene, award winning coffee shops, and lots more to offer! You’re welcome back anytime ❤

I love Amarillo! I was only there for 18 hrs, but I instantly fell in love. Great people there! I’m definitely going back one day.
Big shout out to the Boys Ranch just northwest of Amarillo and the incredible work they do.
As a native it is always so funny to see everyone's reaction to Amarillo. You either HATE it or LOVE it. There is no in between 🤣

Amarillo is Chill 😎
We got to make a brief road trip stop in Amarillo this Summer. We chose to take a 2 hour trail ride with Cowgirls and Cowboys in the West. It was a wonderful experience. Amarillo and the Palo Duro Canyon are beautiful.
Born and raised in Amarillo. Never once have I visited the Cadillac Ranch or the American Quarter Horse Museum. Growing up here the most interesting things were the haunted buildings and stories we all heard about
Texas is my home country
Thank you so much for showing Amarillo! My son moved there almost 3 years ago. I am so excited as we will be visiting in September for his wedding

We were stationed at Cannon AFB in the middle of nowhere Clovis, NM...Amarillo and Lubbock were about an hour and a half from where we were at and on the weekends, it'd be like driving into town for us at either location ❤ (love both cities and somehow they both have a small town charm)
Dude, you took a short trip from Lubbock to Amarillo. My brother lives in Plans, just west of Lubbock, and I live in the DFW area. I can easily make it to his house in a day. I did grow up in Dalhart, so on weekends, we would go to Amarillo. It took about an hour and a half to get there, but we would spend all day Saturday hanging out and having fun as teenagers.
First time seeing your channel. Loved this video. I live in Amarillo and I needed reminding of some of great things we have here. Subscribed.
I live about an hour from Amarillo and during the school year I travel up there every single day to go to school.
Even if you can't finish the 72 oz steak dinner it's only $72. I just read an article today about some nice chain steakhouse selling 40 ounce tomahawk steaks for $250.
My uncle Jeff Jeffers owned the stockyards cafe back in the day. 50s 60s 70s
I love the cinematography you and your team do. The recreational vehicle part was delightful.
You ate more of the steak than I did lmao. Good job!

I love seeing people come to the place ive lived my whole life and love it so much, loved seeing you enjoy the canyon where i practically grew up, the last hike up to the lighthouse is a fun one, way steeper irl you have to use your 4LD or four limb drive 😂
I’m from Tulia, 40 min south of Amarillo
I grew up @ BR. I call Amarillo my home, although ive been gone close to 40 years. Ive passed through several times and seen some good changes and some sad outcomes of places that never grew. Live in New Jersey now and work in NYC.

If no one has said it yet, Stanley marsh was a big time creep. I went to school with one of his victims and I always felt real bad for the dude. He was a good guy that didn’t deserve what happened to him.

I've never seen your videos before but you summed up Amarillo pretty quick lived here my whole life. You missed some things but they probably wouldn't have been as good in a video. We got a lot more than Route 66 in the Palo Duro Canyon but you did a good job and yes a lot of things at least up here in Amarillo are bigger Boulder Wilder maybe it's because Terrain is so flat yes sir this is God's country and we are very country normally very hospitable also but you did miss all the meth addicts one of the things of our boredom up here in such a flat Terrain but it's become a way of life for us you're either a cowboy or on meth okay we got a really great Hospital too there's lots of nurses in our schools are good also but to sum it up thank you this is a good video I liked it I enjoyed it as a person from here God bless

A lot more than rednecks and meth heads in Amarillo. He did miss a few places like the Panhandle Plains Historical Museum (Biggest in Texas). Unfortunately places like Asarco and the Helium plant along with Amarillo AFB are gone now. And it is not like he can make a video of Pantex. Point is there are more places to see and not everyone on Amarillo is involved in farming and ranching. Just a stereotype. And yes the wind blows and it snows in Texas almost every year. But Amarillo has some of the friendliest people in Texas (and a few soreheads too). A gem most people in the big triangle of Texas know little about. Hopefully this video can help.
*reads title* oh i was from there, guessing a rating of 1

Saying Palo Duro Canyon is the second largest canyon in the U.S. is like saying Kim Kardashian is the the second most famous person in the U.S.
Amarillo, TX crime analytics With a crime rate of 42 per one thousand residents, Amarillo has one of the highest crime rates in America compared to all communities of all sizes - from the smallest towns to the very largest cities.
