Day Sun Sets On Last Of 'Fighting 42s' | Forces TV
HMS Edinburgh, the Royal Navy's last remaining Type 42 destroyer, has sailed back into Portsmouth from her final deployment. The 30-year-old warship has spent the last six months patrolling the Atlantic. She decommissions in June - having clocked up 793,345 miles - as the Type 42s make way for the new-generation Type 45s.

I was onboard ‘The Bristol’, a type 82 Destroyer. I was supposed to have been drafted to HMS Kent, a type 42… but it was in dry dock after a world tour…! Now, ‘pull up a sandbag’…lol…! I remember when you had ‘liquid lunches’ at the Shipwrights Arms (ie, ‘Chippie’s’) in Portsmouth… got your tattoos done at ‘The Arches’ underneath Portsmouth Harbour train station… went “trapping” at Joanna’s in Southsea…. three cans daily beer allowance… smoked ‘Pusser’s’ baccy… had a ‘mail drop’ every two weeks… and wore ‘desert wellies’, jeans and T-shirt ashore (Hawaiian shirts abroad) no matter what the weather was like….! How times have changed…!

HMS Kent was a County Class destroyer. Then a Type 23 frigate 😉
Feels close to home as my dad served on the D97 as an seaman specialist. 😀🇬🇧
I was on the Gloucester with Hoops...the 42s were awesome ships!

If I remember correctly the type 42s where vulnerable and under armed during the Falkland war I was in the army at the time and my cousin in the navy and telling him they looked vulnerable to air attack and sadly as you know 2 were lost .
Fingers crossed for a second batch of Type 45's

In the past I would have agreed but sadly there isn't the manpower.
Served on HMS Cardiff in the early 90’s as an RP
