Country: USA
Language: English
Release Date: 14 May 1959 (UK)
Filming Locations: Flagstaff, Arizona, USA
Storyline:
Cowboys and ranchers have to put their differences aside when a gang of outlaws, led by army captain Jack Bruhn, decide to spend the night in a little Western town. Written by Mattias Thuresson
Reviews:
"Andre de Toth directs faultlessly here bringing a big surprise to anyone who thought that 1950's westerns were watered down versions of reality. This is possibly the most uncompromising and bleak vision of the old west that I can remember seeing for a film from the 1950's. Brilliantly photographed against a backdrop of snow, hills and forests, with wonderfully composed shots of both actors and scenery, this is a minor masterpiece. Terrific choice of actors headed by tough guy Robert Ryan, folk singer Burl Ives and the beautiful Tina Louise with great supporting actors, Dabs Greer, Elisha Cook Jr, Jack Lambert etc. Great story, unfolding slowly and with completely unexpected events occurring throughout. Just when you think something is going to explode, de Toth holds it all back, racking up the tension to the bitter end. The best western I've watched in years. If only they made pictures like this still." Written by a.lampert on IMDb.com
"One of the coolest stand offs in western history, between the town folks and the outlaws they hired to keep out other outlaws. Their hired hands that they used for their dirt are no longer needed now they want to go 'legit'. Roll the bottle on the bar, when it drops, we draw! Before it can Burl Ives and his men bust in. They are raw, hungry and and extremely un-PC. Their leader is dying, if he does, the dogs he hired to protect him will, rob and pillage and....Tina Louise, playing against the Gilligan Isle type, most know her from. Ives, far from the nice snowman most know him from. Robert Ryan being the badA$%& we know he can be. I love this movie. And fantastic character actors, I might not remember their names off the top of my head but their contribution will not leave my hollow head for quiet some time. Enjoyable, on surface also, one could draw some parallels between this fictional story and the story on how most towns/businesses go "legit" usually started on illicit means. Story of 'Merica ? Maybe. This movie is probably overlooked in the DVD bargain bin at your local big lot box store. Well worth the 2 for 5, even if your second selection bites, this one will be well worth it." You can not watch a better western. Bonus my favorite actor Robert Ryan. you will not find a tougher more stressful fulfilling movie. Everyone involved in this movie should be proud. One movie I felt sorry for the animals and actors. Thank you so much for sharing.

It's amazing how different a film can be when the objective is on the entertainment rather than politics, appeasing some tiny fraction of people, ..., ensuring no bugs were harmed or offended, and finally, objective #93, entertainment.

Robert Ryan was one of the most reliable actors in films. He should have won at least one Academy Awards. He was only nominated once, for supporting actor in "Crossfire" in 1947. He didn't win. A pity. He worked with some of the top directors of the time. And they wanted to work with him.

I enjoyed the dynamics of this movie. The storyline starts one way, then took a different spin toward a darker plot. When the really bad guy's rode into town. And raised mayhem with the towns people. Especially with the females, who had nowhere to run or hide. Even though it was fictional. The reality would had been unforgiven. Overall the movie is worth watching.

Tina Louise proved here that she could have been a much more serious actress. When she took the role of Ginger Grant in "Gilligan's Island" it had a similar effect on future movie producers that Marilyn Monroe had when she agreed to make a series of "cheesecake" roles in movies. It gets hard to shake an image once that image makes you iconic. By the same token, when "Gilligan's Island" Dawn Wells tried to sell herself as a sexy bad girl in roles ("The Invaders"), the audience wouldn't buy it.

IMO, this movie ‘Day of the Outlaw’ is more 'noir' uncolored as the artist intended. The starkness of the landscape is highlighted better in black and white, just as the severity of the clashing human emotions are. Colorizing this movie defiles it.
