Hey I'm a aspiring electrician that is still in Highschool, I live in Texas and I'm just wondering what kind of exams did you had to take. Was it more than one? And what kind of subjects were in there.

  • @cipher1167

@@xmzru 1st exam; measurement like measuring with a tape measure fractions. 2nd exam; arithmetic that’s making calculations, exact calculations without a calculator, multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction. 3rd exam; I forgot the name of this test but it’s got it do with comprehension, you’ve gotta read some paragraphs and answer questions related to it, the paragraphs change entirely or just partial details and you have to basically answer correctly and with detail. 4th and last one is an interview with a company and you have to pass it too, they ask like 10 questions. My school didn’t require college algebra because their arithmetic exam was on par with it.

Great explanation of the importance of precise measurement to install a box between the studs. One suggestion, on repetitive measurements create a story pole. The pole will act as a reference to the standardized hight of a box you are installing for a switch, outlet, data etc... Also, the pole will avoid you having to continually measure at every location.

They have me alone wiring up multiple rooms at a physician’s building in Baltimore. Can’t say I haven’t learned a lot without school but I’m eager to start. I’ve waited 8 months just to get some background knowledge and I have definitely caught along pretty fast. Anyways I know how it is getting boxes set and running jumpers and pulling your feeds. I get so frustrated when I’m alone especially when pulling through multiple studs and trying to fish down a wall haha

This kind of job is a lot of fun if you like producing with your hands but in the middle of the winter around cold steel, temperatures can drop to -10 depending on region. Use a towel on your shoulder before moving strut and conduit against your neck at that temperature so you last longer. I feel I should also say that during my time, we were not allowed to wear masks without everyone having to have to wear a mask so we weren't allowed to wear masks. My voice got so gruff sometimes I called everyone I knew and they didn't believe it was me because I sounded like a cement mixer hahaha. The crew though it was funny as well. It eventually went away but I have the worst skin irritation to this day, psoriasis now. I can't do this kind of job anymore but I still have dreams I'm doing it I worked so much lmao. They even told me I had a competitive amount of accumulated hours towards early graduation before I got sick. Apprentices life, %110 until you see it on the back of your eyelids :)

24” wide studs is crazy. Definitely not allowed here. Either that, or just not done. I don’t actually don’t know the building code at all lol but I only ever encounter 16” distance studs

I don’t use a tape what I do is cut a stud @ 16” so I’m 18” center and I go man go. I do use a 6” long screw shaft. I don’t put a mud ring upside down. In a job like that I take my cart.

Yeah it’s all the same electrically. You’ll need to learn the parts of course. Eventually you should learn to bend lots of conduit and how to make conduit racks. Just jump into it if you’re curious.

Honestly it looks easier than residential, I know how to bed conduit. I was lucky to get mentored by a general electrical contractor for a few years before starting an actual apprenticeship. We did everything, from resi to industrial, I feel very confident hopefully I get sponsored soon.

Falling of a ladder is the biggest risk , but that can happen at home too , my stepson wants to be an electrician he’s 19 6,2 tall but can’t tell the difference between the screw and a bolt . Not everybody is meant for this trade , nobody is going to pat your back or give you sparky award or name a building after you, you’ll just make an honest living , have good friends and satisfy your soul that you did your best and somebody will be happy their lights turn on and stay on. Oh and have the best tool on the block .
