The software compatibility nonsense is one of the things about any new electronics / computers that I can't stand. It further undermines my confidence about buying EV's and chargers. It's the wild west at the moment. You did great persevering through the crap customer service you got at ABB. Cheers!

The thing about charging stations for electric cars is that you want a charging station as "stupid" as possible, and then you control the charging with the car's software. The problems start when the charging station is in a place where it can be used by anyone, in which case you need some kind of authorization system.

Feels good to follow a female Canadian in the trades for once! On another note issues like this are why Right-To-Repair is extremely important, especially in the new era of EV’s. If we arent careful it will fall down the path of John Deer.

@@grettirgrattmards2348 Sounds familiar. Do you have some nice setup for remote access (on site too) to the system? I have tried a lot and can't say that anything has been that great. I started with just a long cable and moved it to random push buttons to access knx-bus. Then i started to have projects with ethernet capability and tried wifi (which was shit), tosibox-vpn with 4g and lately an extra pc with teamviewer. Having a laptop on a "office/standing desk" made from logistic roll cage has been great on larger sites. On smaller sites I have done all the grouping/naming with a phone over teamviewer, which is ok for couple hours.

Thanks for the video. It is beyond frustration to waste time and money at the mercy of the manufacturer’s good will to assist with warranty issues. Swapping the equipment with a better one (better brand too) should be a good solution for the long-term customer satisfaction and peace of mind. I had a similar issue with a Cisco access point and, after hours waiting for their customer service to assist me, they sent me a new firmware that immediately bricked my Cisco access point and made it useless, I called them again and, after more hours waiting for them to answer me, they took no responsibility so I had to buy a new access point (not Cisco). Some companies simply don't care at all about customers and, when sales are down, they just get rid of employees to cut costs.

I can relate to this. I'm not an electrician, but I am a service technician that repairs my company's specialized equipment for our customers. It's a pain when there are SW issues, because the tech support isn't that great, and the low-level customer support agents are a nightmare to deal with. Some agents are so out of their depth, they basically surrender by hanging up, and hope I get connected to someone else when I call back.

Honestly, the ABB chargers suck ass which is unfortunate because ABB generally makes good products. I never recommend them to customers mainly due to price. The Tesla wall connector is the best price point if you don't need access control.

Go with a different brand. I’m not sure why they need a software update. J1772 is a standard that should activate and work on any vehicle with that plug. ABB makes a lot of the fast chargers and they constantly have problems.

Hey Karly. I just found your channel and I can’t wait to show my six-year-old daughter. Can you tell me what about your childhood put you on the path to the trades? I’m going to support her in going to college (if she wants to do that), but I want her to have a solid trade first because college ain’t working out for everybody and if there’s anything I wish I did when I was young it’s pick up a trade and I wanna foster that in her.

Well At some point the vehicles will have the NACS system and that will solve lots of problems. Chargers will all talk the same in NORTH America. Those imported from another country that has CCS or CHAdeMO. Yeah that market on EV charging systems is not locked down yet and Till in Magic zone. However ABB which should be stable is falling behind the curb on PRICE and useability. It Great Industrial supplier for those with money. However there is alternatives.

ABB makes great electrical equipment except for the EV chargers. They suck ass over here in Europe as well and don't have load balancing features like the Easee chargers we use a lot.

I’m calling bologna on ABB this time. These are J1772 chargers. It’s a glorified receptacle. The vehicle in the ESC has zero software or high-level communication. It’s a PWM and resistors that enables charging.

This is mostly because vehicle manufacturers are constantly trying to improve on battery longevity and get past the problem especially with trucks that when they are loaded or towing, the range falls exponentially! Now these charger companies can’t keep up with universal charger software! Software will always control hardware, and hardware will always trip up software.

This is completely because ABB released garbage software. ABB is blaming new vehicles to cover themselves for releasing this trash. Serval other brands of chargers I’ve installed don’t have any issue. Zero software updates, and they’re pushing almost a decade of use. This type of charger, an L2, is a glorified GFCI receptacle with a special plug. Anything to do with the battery or anything that’s not AC straight from the poco is on vehicle. This charger just makes sure you can’t get zapped by line voltage if you drop the plug in a puddle and that the AC to the connector is cut when you pull out so there’s no sparks.

What's worse, phone support people who make you wait on the line to get no actual help and then hang up, or KZreadrs who get 4k+ viewers to watch them film themselves waiting on the phone for support? The lack of respect some KZreadrs have for their viewers' time is out of control. 4 minutes of my life I won't get back.
