Day in the Life of an Astrophysics University Student (During Exams)
My name is Lewis and welcome to a day in my life as an astrophysics student in the UK during exams. This video was recorded in January 2020 before my first exams in uni (and before the whole coronavirus outbreak, so there won't be an updated version for summer exams)

Im really good at maths and physics. Im still in highschool tho. I love astronomy more than anything. I can talk about it for hours and get so passionate and emotional about it. Not many people support me. Thank god my family and friends support me. Everyone else laughs and says it's really hard to be a successful one. I know. But I'm willing to risk it and give my all to it. I want to achieve it. People keep asking me if i have anything else in mind in case this doesn't work out. I dont want to have a plan b. I can't think of myself doing anything else. I won't be happy. Astronomy fills me.

Hello! I want to become an Astrophysicist! I am a grade 11 student accordingly what advice would you like to give me to pursue a career in this field? Or what kind of difficulties did you face and you would like to suggest? I am a non UK and non US student so what university should I be targeting? And are there any projects in which I can participate at an amateur level? Please revert! Waiting patiently!
Do you recommend the astrophysics course at Cardiff or do you suggest elsewhere? Thanks for the video!!
As an astrophysicist student, do you ever have time to have fun? Because I want to major in astrophysics as well but I wonder about how social life could balance all the studying and difficult concepts I’m trying to learn. Thank you so much
@LewisMCooper
3 жыл бұрын
In short, yes! I have a pretty active social life outside of my degree. Obviously some prioritise their work more than their social life which is totally fine too but I’ve always tried to keep a good balance between the two. I play rugby regularly, go to the gym with my friends a lot and used to go out a lot in the nights with my friends (before covid happened of course) too! No matter the subject, you’ll still find time for a social life too if you find the balance
I thought wow that student accomodation looks familiar then you said you were at Cardiff. That would be why
it was so nice to see how your day went! i'm not sure if you said, but what uni do you go to? i also do astrophysics, i go to queen mary university :D

Hey man what'd you get in your exam?
I’m in 12th grade and looking to apply to university next year and I’m interested in physics, particularly astrophysics, but I’m worried that there wouldn’t be many other girls in physics based programs and I wouldn’t be able to relate to anyone. maybe that’s a stupid worry idk😂
@LewisMCooper
3 жыл бұрын
That's a valid worry but from my experience, it's not one you really need to worry about. In my class at university I would estimate that there's about 40% of the class which are girls. People tend to be really friendly at university anyway and most people will relate to your situation :)
I love astronomy & astrophysics I’ve read over 30 books and have been studying it since I was 6 but I suck at math lmaoo cool vid tho bro

don’t know if you’ve already applied but maybe you could look at foundation years before starting the degree? A lot of unis offer these (or pathway programs) , it’s best to contact the unis directly regarding your situation!
is it a really hard major? i'm studying biochemistry and i had a few courses of physics and maths and i think i like them more than my chemistry courses so idk if i should drop out or continue 😢
@LewisMCooper
3 жыл бұрын
I would say that it depends on what you're already good at. If you find vector calculus and differential/integral calculus doable then it's a great course. Generally though, astrophysics is a pretty hard course and you need to have a natural enjoyment of it in order for you to get through it. In the end though, it's up to you what you do and I'm sure things will work out fine no matter what you choose :)

Hello there! I've done quite a bit of research on my end for an astrophysics major, and yes you can go for a master's degree in astrophysics, even a PHD if you want to do that. I'm going to a 4 year school next fall from a 2 year college, try to get my bachelor's degree in astrophysics, and then go to a graduate school to earn my masters degree in which is needed to do research and become a scientist. My ultimate goal is to try to work for NASA, and try to become an astronaut. It maybe very hard, but it's not impossible, I believe you can do it!

my best advice would be to research colleges/ universities that interest you. Look at the modules you’ll learn and the reputation of the institution. Try and figure out what interests you the most and then compare it to the modules on offer at the unis. For internships, you should be able to find those yourself with a bit of research too :)
