Day in the Life of a Japanese Working Mom

A day in the life of a Japanese working mother of 2 children living in Tokyo Japan. This is the life of a Typical Japanese family living in Tokyo Japan with both parents working. Hifumi, 27 years old, works in Tokyo and runs her own churro shop while taking care of her 2 Japanese kids. The 2 Tokyo kids usually go to the nursery around 8:30 on weekdays so mornings are usually chaotic on top of her regular work schedule which starts shortly after she drops them off and continues until the afternoon, then she has to juggle the 2 kids schedules picking them up at separate times usually between 3-4 to also shuttle them separately to one of their many extracurricular activities and to finally bring them home just in time for dinner, but since today is a weekend there’s a slower pace to things, nonetheless Hifumi still has to balance some of her work today, while also taking care of her kids. She actually took several years off of work after giving birth, as she struggled mentally to take care of them on her own, while her husband worked to support the family financially. In Japan, it’s common enough for women to completely handle the child rearing responsibilities, that the term, one ope was coined, meaning one parent operation. But ultimately she decided being a Japanese housewife wasn’t for her and eagerly took a production job and eventually started her own business. Being a working mom in Japan isn’t easy, but she definitely prefers being a business owner compared to working at job for some else like when she worked in production. Now, she’s able to better manage and dictate her schedule so she can be flexible for her kids activities. Today, we'll see how this working Japanese mother manages her time between work, home and kids.

Shame on government of Japan for not offering more support to parents. They should at the very least double the monthly child benefit. Also some form of free daycare isn't unreasonable.

She’s such a great mom. Balancing work life with parental duties. And her method of “zoning out” and not reacting to the kids’ temper tantrums or breaking things is actually really good. Like she said, “you can’t rewind it.” You can only move forward. They’re still young and don’t know better, and they are still learning how to communicate their wants and needs. By seeing their mom, being calm and gentle, she is displaying proper behavior that they will learn as they get older.

Completely agree! Something I saw recently that I loved, and will take to heart was "Whenever I'm having a tough parenting day, I like to pretend I've traveled from the future to spend just one more day with my baby. It always helps me gain perspective." It definitely helps to remind ourselves that these are the days we'll miss dearly when our kids are grown up and living their own lives. Best of luck on your journey, from one dad to another. :)

That usually ends up with kids trying to hid the mess or not owing up to making it and later on when they're teens not feeling comfortable with telling their parents about things they do and need help fixing even bigger messes. When my kids were little and spilled stuff, the most they'd get was a sigh and "Go get a towel and clean it up please. You need to be more careful next time." (One of our three house rules is "If you make a mess, clean it up." I'd help them clean up messes when they were little and now that they're teens, it's automatic) One of my friends told me once, "You're so CALM! I'd be screaming at them!" They're little. They're still learning. Accidents happen. Even adults spill stuff! As long as they clean up their mess and no one was hurt, we're good.

She is such an amazing mom and business owner. I love the child rearing method she's doing. While its difficult in the moment, by not yelling, she's teaching her kids by example how to handle stressful situations. The kids also feel more comfortable turning to her if they have trouble. I remember growing up that my parents would yell at me whenever I made a mistake, it got to the point that I became scared even turning to them when I needed help because I didn't want to get yelled at. The fact that she's balancing being a mom with being a business owner with two stores opened is incredible. Also round of applause to both her and her husband who sharing chores and duties in the home.

But my wife wasn’t home that often due to her work schedule (big Japanese company) so I had the highly memorable experience juggling a full time job and being primary caregiver for 2 small children at the same time. I know it’s usually mom’s doing this so my own experience gave me so much respect for them. One image that hit me was her just getting (or making) food for her kids and then eating the leftovers. There were a few rare occasions that they didn't but otherwise it's always the case. I understood why they did that because they just think if they make me scared etc then I would be more careful or something but they don't realise how this sometimes make it worse for me or how I feared to ever trying t do certain things (moving things around etc).

One of the things she told me is to never be a stay-at-home mom because of how lonely it can be. Finishing the food the kids don't eat, that's actually what my mom used to do with me and my sister. I think the line between being too lenient and too strict is very thin. I can't imagine how stressful it must be to be a parent - it's a big responsibility to make sure your child grows into capable adult, but also confident and loving. Too much critique, strictness damages child's spark, personality. Too much of laughing off questionable behaviour and the child will grow spoiled, feeling they deserve everything. I don't want to judge her, but I agree, it rubbed me off the wrong way when the girl was speaking so harshly to her mother (which is strange, since mom is so softspoken - and children tend to mimic behaviours - where did she learn it? maybe the situation is different behind the camera.), or all the tugging. You can see in her eyes she doesn't respect her mom, which is quite sad, since she works so hard.

How is everyone raving she's such a good mum? Nit saying she's a bad one, but she's not restricting what they watch. She's gentle and patient, but it doesn't look like she's encouraging independence, her 7 year ols for example should be able to clean hee own feet, and her 4 year old shouldn't really be in a pram anymore. The apartment looks crammed with toys, they have their own ipads... this is just a sneak peak, no way to make judgement of her parenting as a whole. Wouldn't judge anyway, to each their own, but I certainly wouldn't rave she's an amazing mum, just a good old average mum, making good choices here, and bad choices there. Also found it funny she says she's not a good cook, but has a food business...
