Day in the Life of a German Shepherd

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Shadow is a pure-breed German Shepherd - almost 2 years old and about 38kg
This is a snippet of what Shadow gets up to on a typical weekend so keep in mind you don't see every single thing he does that day. I specifically choose certain activities to show for entertainment purposes. I skip, fast forward and take out a lot of clips - all you see is 10-20 minutes of a day in his life. These videos are meant to be fun and lighthearted of a German Shepherd living in New Zealand who has a a lot of freedom. He is in no way 'perfectly' trained or is on the 'perfect' diet. I'm still learning every day and improving to provide the best life for Shadow.

When I was born , and was brought home from hospital, to my crib, my mother and father had bought me a, full breed German Shepherd. It slept under my crib as I was a baby, and we bonded instantly, i was told later, he would poop on porch beside me everytime I would poop. "On the porch" . . My companion never left my side when I went to school he walked me to my bus stop and he would always return when I came home. . . he always guarded me from anyone who came near me . Zeke was his name and he will always, eternally be my best friend and guardian. . . . When he passed I purchased the most expensive Rose seed and planted it with his ashes . . . I visit his grave often. Going there in two weeks.

@@petrofor3430 Hey I adopt them too. Point Steph A is likely making is that dogs shouldn't be intentionally bred that way. The reason for not liking the conformation has to do with the fact that it harms the dog. You've still got all the beautiful qualities there. It's the bad breeders that get the hate, not the dog, no way. It's probably better your dog is a German Shepherd mix. That might dilute the trait for the extreme angulation which means he might have better joints over a longer time period.

Growing Up with Daphne, Good luck with your new German Shepherd puppy. I only buy German Shepherds but I learned quite a bit from videos on you-tube. There is a video on you-tube about a man from Russia who has a great deal of knowledge about this great breed. I watched his video about 2 months ago and learned things that I never knew about this breed. Just some tips for your new puppy if interested. This guy said never give your German Shepherd any strenuous exercising until he reaches 13 or 14 months old because his bones and joints are still growing until he reaches that age. He even suggested when you take your dog out in the car, do not let him jump in and out of the car by himself. Lift him up and take him out as well. He even said not to let your dog go up the stairs on his own until that age The reason being is if you do these things before his bones and joints are fully grown, he could have problems later on in life with his bones and joints. I am guilty of all these things myself because I did not know this until 2 months ago so you can draw your own conclusions. However I never had any problems with any of my GSD. They all end up with hip problems eventually when they get old, but so do many other breeds. Good luck with your new great puppy. Great breed.

Robert A. Lofgren Jr. Thank you for that information. I have actually heard that before with the jumping and not to put to much on their hips because of issues later on in life. I used to own a saddle back German Shepherd, she looked similar to your Shadow. So beautiful! She ended up getting the hip issues when she got older, it was sad to see her in pain. I'm actually feeding my pup some cod liver oil with her meals, heard this was good for their joints. Do you happen to watch German Shepherd man? He has a You tube channel as well with pretty good info. 🙂

@@GermanShepherdDaphne Yes I have watched many videos from German Shepherd man. I also give my Shepherd Glucosamine chewables from the time I got him and will continue all through his adult life. If it actually helps I am not to sure but I like to think so. I also buy the fish oil chewables as well. I think I will try the cod liver oil as well. I do want to mention there is a catalog company called KV supplies and they have everything possible for dogs like heartguard heart worm meds, flea and tick prevenitive and all kinds of prescription medications for dogs. It is similar to pet meds but I find most of the items are cheaper then pet meds. So if my dog has to go to the vets and needs a prescription I tell my vet I can get it much cheaper at KV and it is much cheaper. So KV calls the vet up and he faxes the prescription. Good luck with your puppy. Hope the info helped.

John Malihi, Hi John, I do. I was told from my last German Shepherd breeder when I got my puppy at 9 weeks old feed him adult dog food instead of puppy food because the puppy food makes them grow to quickly and later on they can have problems with bones and joints. With adult food they grow to their full growth but at a slower pace. When I took my puppy to the vet to be checked out after purchase, I told my vet what the breeder said and she agreed. Also if interested you-tube has videos about German Shepherds from a breeder named German Shepherd Man. Good luck with your great puppy. Great breed.

  • @kurai_sen7065

Your puppy probably just wants to play, and he sees you as a playmate. Puppies aren't generally aggressive, unless they're taught, they're more likely to just be playing. It's important to stop this behavior at a young age, and you can do this by introducing a correcting system (not punishment, correction). Use a voice command like "No" and ignore them. Reward behavior you like. For eg, if your puppy bites your trousers, stop play at once with a firm No and when he calms down, give him a toy. Correct and redirect. A professional trainer can help with this, as well as proper socialization. Make sure he gets to meet lots of other doggies :)

@@MayankKumar00010 I actually suggest you invest in a good trainer, and exercise your dog well. Understand that mouthing is common with puppies because it's how they interact and experience the world, similar to the way a baby uses his hands. I wonder though, does he bite you after your play sessions, or randomly? If he bites you after your sessions, it's probably he hasn't realized that play time is over and wants to continue. If it happens randomly, he probably is trying to get your attention or incite play. In both cases, be firm and stop all manner of play with a firm NO. Redirect with toys, and praise them when they play with the toys rather than your leg. Another thing you could do is, if he's biting hard, teach him that it hurts. Shout loudly and pull away if he bites hard, and turn away as if you are hurt. Reward when he uses the pressure you wish or just stops mouthing in favor of licking. You're telling him that biting hurts you and he learns that he doesn't want that, so he finds an alternative. Remember to keep tons of sources of play around you, like kong toys filled with treats or balls or squeaky toys. Just one bone is not enough, your house should be filled with toys. If he has alternatives, he won't look to extreme measures. Invest, seriously invest in your dog. German Shepherds are one of the greatest dogs alive, but they suffer from ignorant owners. Get your hands on all sorts of behavior and training books, spend on a good trainer and train him in obedience. It all pays off with a balanced adult dog :)

@@kurai_sen7065 true, but also the trainer my dog was trained with used commands & shock collars or animal clickers. My dog wears a shock collar when he goes outside because he digs, I PERSONALLY don't use the shock function because 1 setting on me hurt like hell. I use vibrate or sound because the sound is very loud and it distracts them from the bad behavior. Verbal comands DO NOT always work. My dog didn't listen to verbal comands at all he ignored them and kept doing bad behaviors. Once I smacked his nose (not hard) and told him NO! BAD! he stopped and listened very well after that. I'm not saying hit your dog, but if you need to give their nose a little smack there's nothing wrong with it. MY dog is perfectly trained and a very good listener now. He still jumps on guests which i'm trying to correct but he's getting ther. LONG STORY SHORT. Don't rely on verbal commands, especially with puppies as they DO NOT understand what no means unless they're shown something they don't like EX: he bites. Tap the nose (enough to make them listen) and say NO BAD wait for them to stop then reward them for being good and listening. they should know the word BAD is bad and the word NO means NO.

@@kurai_sen7065 aLSO meeting other dogs doesn't really do anything but make SOME dogs extremely hyper. My dog can't be around other dogs if i'm doing any sort of training or want him to listen, he goes insane around other animals (NOT because he's never around them, but because he's an only child dog in my house) so he sees animals outside and at the park but he can never be calm. So it's not good for hyper training dogs to be around other animals until they're trained. mY dog knows by now not to run off unless i give him the ok to approach other animals. ALSO make sure 100% the animals they're associating with are nice, or your dog could wind up in a dog fight and it doesn't matter who started it, if police get involved both could be put down if your dog shows any aggression. my dog personally loves other dogs FOR a BIT then he gets annoyed and will growl for them to leave him alone. He's not aggressive but there was a time at the dog park he was not in a good mood and this pitbull came up and bit his ear (i'm sure to play) my dog growled at him and the pitbull WENT OFF bit his neck and dragged him. Just make sure when training your dog they know how to show their annoyance without aggression or fighting NOT like the pitbull. My dog let out a small growl and backed up and the Pitbull attacked him. So clearly one dog was trained to deal with his issues by voiceing them and one was trained to fight to the death.

oooh hahhahah to good, he's so beautiful and such a smart dog, I want one but my partner isn't convinced as they do need a specific type of care to be a good dog. And the price for a well bread one is crazy. Breeders are taking the micky out of people now. 3000 or a pure bread pup....what's in them, gold dust? hahahah

momozen29, Prices do go up like on everything else. German Shepherds are magnificent dogs and yes they do require a lot of care but tell your partner they are worth all the care in the world because all the love and care that you give this magnificent breed you will get back in return many times over. All dogs are great but the German Shepherd dog is AWESOME. Hope you get one someday because you will know exactly what I am talking about. Good day,

Hm, I'm not so sure about that, considering the rampant backyard breeding and puppy mills that have basically destroyed the breed. A good breeder spends a lot of money feeding and caring for the parents, selecting the right temperaments, caring for the mother during gestation and the birth, socializing the pups, running tests (hip, eye, elbow, etc plus DNA), taking the pups to puppy classes, training them and such. I'm pretty sure no true breeder actually makes a profit with their dogs, but you'll have to check. Beware of cheap puppies, but check up on the expensive ones too.

mine is a german shepard mix, so he's not full blood germand shepard but looks just like hers. I don't understand the certain type of care. I take care of him just how my friends and family take care of their animals. They're more energetic but that's about it.

@@isabellalockwood5858 As long as you take good care of your dog and it sounds like you do, that is all that matters. Vanessa W is just giving you some examples of what she does with her dog everyday. I own a German Shepherd and I do different things then her, but I also take very good care of my dog as well. There is really no certain types of care as long as you give your dog great care.

it's funny how he knew he had been bad. BUT I was told by my cousins animal trainer that scolding your animal LONG after the situation happened, they're confused thinking what they did in that moment was bad. It's best to do it when the dog is doing it then not bring it up again. That's what I was told at least.

Except the fact that your telling shadow bad boy after god knows how long he had actually sat on the couch. The dog has no clue what your yelling at him for now that time has passed. He’s laying down and acting that way because the tone of voice and you snapping your fingers. Just a little food for thought as we’d call it. Beautiful dogs though. I have a Shepherd and a boxer and the shepherd is so stinkin smart. The boxer is smart but he has a lot of silly bones in him lol.

Absolutely does not matter how long he had been on the couch. We are stern with our dogs because they can easily take advantage of me. He’s sized me up and there are certain things that is a hard no inside the house, including being on the couch. I had been at work all day so telling him off as soon as I see him was the earliest it could have been done. He’s really smart and only reacts at me telling him off if he knows he’s done something wrong. He doesn’t react at me yelling at him if he hasn’t done anything wrong

Vanessa W yes, our dogs typically know when they’ve done something wrong but all I’m saying is it has been proven by many professionals that yelling at your dog after the fact (when you don’t catch them in the act) doesn’t do them any good and a lot, if not most dogs, will not know what they are being yelled at for. They don’t reason like people do. Most people block off a part of their house or put covers over furniture that they don’t want their pets on or destroying. If you think I’m being an ass, well sorry. All I’m literally doing is giving a proven suggestion to another Shepherd/dog owner. www.cracked.com/article_18551_6-well-intentioned-ways-youre-ruining-your-dog.html
