Day in the Life of a DOCTOR: STUDYING

A day in the life of a doctor involves more studying than you would expect - while working in the hospital, studying at home and even with friends. Join me as I prepare for a big exam this weekend!
Being a resident is like having two jobs: working long hours in the hospital + studying on your off time. It can be a real challenge at times...
Wish me luck on this exam!!
Thanks for watching guys!

I just found your channel this morning and I’ve been watching all day long. Watching some of your videos made me realize being a doctor is 100x harder than I already thought it was and I’ve also realized my small brain and my level of immaturity could never handle this much information and responsibility hahaha I’ll just be over here focusing on keeping my little humans alive. That’s the most my brain and body can handle. Barely. Thanks for all you do! Doctors and nurses are amazing. You’re so smart 😌

You were talking about young people presenting with unexplained weakness. I have had two bouts of Guillian Barre Syndrome and it was due to some serious sleuth work by a young progressive doctor that saved my life. When I was first diagnosed at 14 years old I did not present exactly like Guillian Barre, but a doctor gave IVIG a shot, and it worked. At 28 years old it happened again. Many doctors didnt even entertain that I was Guillian Barre again, but one young progressive doctor took my clinical background into account and treated me and here I am with zero deficits. Patients appreciate doctors that look outside of the textbook. I love watching your videos!!!

Hi! I work together with many different doctors and I noted something that nearly all of them got. When they're young and learning, they are all energetic, funny, in a good and positive mood and then something happens and a lot of them turn out very bitter, frustrated, angry, they start to treat their own staff like shit and I even had someone say "Do you expect me to enjoy it coming here?" Please don't let that happen to you, you are full of energy and I can't imagine how you can stay so positive and still keep people updated on your blog.

You’re so inspiring. My only goal is to become a doctor but I had a bad start to life and have lost hope lately. I’ll graduate from my biomedicine degree at age 25, and depending on my results/how fast I get in, I’ll probably be 30 when I start medicine. Feel like a failure but hopefully I’ll get there in the end

Lara, don't worry about age... that's not important! People put a lot of pressure on themselves, it doesn't matter how old you are when you get that degree, even if you don't get it, when you gave it your best shot that's all that counts... I'm almost 40 years old, and I'm still not done studying.. I think in the future a lot of people will study, work, and have a family at the same time.

Lara J You are not a failure! We all run on our own time. Besides, when you become a doctor, people are going to care that you are certified waaaay more than they'll care about when you graduated! There's no strict timeline on these things, you'll get there when it's your time!

Health care professions in general is a life long learning experience and that's one thing i love the most about it. As a nurse we don't really have that many test. In a couple of years i will do the ALS (Advanced Life Support) thingie and yearly advanced CPR is basiclly it. But we do have scenario training quite often and I was thrown into my first one the other week and it was a great learning situation. In that case it was the patient who was stable suddenly got a tension pneumothorax. Anywho hope the test went/goes well :)

Hey Siobhan! I love your channel. I am not a med student, but I feel like I am. I'm in a radiology tech program, and just got back from the hospital (11pm). I hear you about spending so much time in the hospital and people forget you still are expected to be a full time student. I'm in bed winding down and watching your videos which totally fascinate me. It gives me hope that this is really where I am meant to be when just after getting off a shift at my own hospital, I come home and watch videos about YOUR days at your hospitals! You will make a fantastic internal medicine doctor. Do you have a specialty in mind?

Lovely as always. Can you do a video on the what you saw on the exam. It is ok to be nervous about dealing with kids there not that easy. My mom for example is a nurse RN and in nursing school you do all these rotations and one of the last ones was pediatrics. And for what ever reason my mom got special treatment and she was escorted in the NICU at that hospital and she was made to hold a 4 day old baby boy detoxing from Buprenorphine and it was screaming for 4 hours straight. It broke my moms heart to see that. When my mom came home she was almost in tears.
