Actually it's an LED driver. LED lamps come in different types, they can work off of the existing ballast, be direct wired with a hot and neutral side to the lamp, or they have an LED driver specific to the lamp. They typically look like an average ballast.

Sounds like what i learnt from teacher while i haven't graduated as a electrician, but teacher was one and we did few tasks with placing lamps & stuff. It looks messy having too long wires, but isn't it more important that the lamp is working in the video. And if they are electricians working, they should have the safety glasses on, because it's more safe for eyes for a reason.

Same here man! I was in college for the last three years ( part time ) not knowing what I wanted to do. Finally just figured out at that I wanna major in electrical engineering but now I have a family to take care of and have to work full time and take one or two classes a semester. Anyways the last 6 months I’ve been working as an electrical apprentice and I love the heck out of it! Something new everyday to keep my mind busy rather than my last job ( stocking at a grocery store). Now my company is gonna pay for me to go to electrical school ( I’ll still pay for college on the side but it’s affordable part time). I also got some debt from college and I refuse to go deeper in debt. Anyways I love the electrical field. Jump right into the trade and try to find an electrical company to start an apprenticeship.

In my area a new ballast is only about 10$ less than an entire new housing that comes with new terminals and everything. End up just changing out the entire thing in order to get all brand new parts instead of just a new ballast. Start to finish i can remove and install a 2x4 fixture in about 10min

From my understanding you're suppose to go through an apprenticeship program for like 5 years to become a journeyman. Now I did commercial maintenance and apartment maintenance. I had to do lighting for places like fred's, family dollar, steinmart and forever 21. We dis retrofitting on forever 21 track lighting. We also did some Aaron's. I also did some other work that you'd have an electrician do. Like run a new circuit for new doors at a Fred's.

You need both trade school and a contractor willing to take you on as an apprentice. Every state has there own license requirements so a quick google will tell all you need to know about starting the process. Only advice I’d give is if you’re looking to travel and want guarantee benefits, find a union shop! That opened the door for nationwide as well as international opportunities for myself. Good luck!

While an actual electrician would also do this, it is only a small small fraction of what you would do. It would be pricey for an Electrician to do these easy swaps hence why they get guys like this to come in and do it for cheaper. After a year in your apprenticeship you’ll start to feel more comfortable. That being said when you’re in the electrical trade you are always learning new things. Even when you are a journeyman Electrician you will still be learning new things and how to perform tasks better
