DAY In Our Multilingual Life | Speaking 4 Languages To Our Kids EVERYDAY

In todays video I want to show you how we speak 4 languages to our children and how well they are learning the four languages.
So we have two children. The older one is called Benjamin and he is 3 years and 6months old. The younger one is called Luca and he is 1 year 11 months old.
Our children are learning German, English, Spanish and Swahili (that is the local language spoken in Kenya and other parts of East Africa).
How we do this on a daily basis is to speak consistently in our native language to our children. I speak German to my children everyday, 24 7 a day
My husband speaks Spanish to our children
We have a helper/nanny who also speaks Swhaili to our children consistently
And the local community language here in Kenya is English and also Swahili, so they are automatically exposed to English and that is also the language they choose to communicate in predominantly .
I just want to clarify that we do any other language teaching with our children except speaking with them consistently on a daily basis. Children are in a sensitive period for learning languages when they are between the ages 0-6 years old.
This means that when you expose a child to a language consistently by speaking to them they will absorb that language without effort on their part. They will soak up the language like a sponge and over the years they will become fluent in that language if you are consistent and you keep exposing them.
So in this video you will see how we speak with our children and introduce them to our languages. You will also notice that our children speak mainly in English and that has been their choice of language to speak in I believe this is because that is the community language here in Kenya however, they understand all 4 languages completely and they do use words from the other three languages mixed in with their English sometimes.
Enjoy the video.

I knew this "interference" is not true because my daughter learned English and Portuguese without problem but you took the experience to the next level! I arrived here because of the Dolores Canon material and ended up finding your beautiful family and place, thank you so much, you make a great difference for the better.

Your babies are so cute!!! I just love seeing something of Kenya and the people. Acrobatics for the kids is just brilliant🌟💃 so fun. I'm all for multi language communication with babies all through the ages. They do learn so easily when little, it's such a gift to them and their life experience. I just came upon your channel last night and am now subscribed and have the notification bell on. ♥️

One thing you said about kids not getting confused with language, that is actually why my mom stopped speaking to me in Spanish when I was very young. I would be asked in one language and answer in another. So it can happen. But it is very possible that this was a phase that would pass when I was a bit older and just had more understanding regarding being able to switch into one language fully and stay there. I would love to be fluent in another language right now! I would be interested in a video about your background in Germany growing up as a person of color--is it commonplace or were you very different from others? Where your husband is from and his experiences and how you came to live in Kenya of all places. Do you have family there? Also life there. How does it compare to Europe, for instance? You have so much diversity going on in your life!

Hi Lemurian Chick. Thank you for sharing your experience with us. What I have learnt after doing research about this topic and also exposing my children to several languages is that children do tend to choose a specific language to communicate in (usually the main language spoken in that country) even though they may be able to understand other languages. But that does not mean they are confused. Speaking is a different skill as oppose to understanding and listening (which is more passive) so it is a lot more difficult. Hence the reason why they tend to master one language first and then over time will start to master the second, third, fourth and so on. It is a long process but research has shown that children who grow up with multiple languages have an easier time learning other languages, thinking about language, developing strong thinking skills growing in other areas of cognitive development etc. So it is really a wonderful gift that you you give to a child. Thanks again and have a fabulous day.

@@dorothyshelton You have a great day too! I think that young children are like sponges and absorb information so readily. By the way, I see that you have spiritual videos here. I don't have kids but the spiritual videos interest me. I was subscribed from your days of raw food recipes. Take care! 🤗

Off topic but I just watched your amazing video on making prebiotics at home (fermented vegetables), it took me ages to find it after having first seen it a year or so ago but thankfully I'd saved it to an old playlist of recipe ideas - It's the best fermented foods video! That aside, it's amazing that you're teaching your kids so many languages :o I'm trying to learn Danish but it's a long, slow process for me. I do practice every day though. Thanks for all the useful videos! ^_^

Hiya, so glad you found it. I unlisted the probiotics video because I wanted to reorient my channel in a new direction which is more about peaceful parenting and spirituality. But I think maybe I should make that video public again as it is quite useful for a lot of people. Thanks for the feedback I appreciate it.

@@dorothysheltonthanks for the reply ^_^ maybe you could make a playlist of interesting older content that could still be useful to people, and put your unlisted videos such as the probiotics one in the playlist? That way it won't actually show up on your channel videos, but people will be able to find it in the playlist? I'm so glad I'd saved it to my old recipes playlist because it was super helpful for me today when I was fermenting some vegetables. I watched so many other videos on fermentation but yours was the most peaceful, most informative, and most useful!! :)

Hi I am just wondering how your youngest is able to speak in English if you expose them constantly to German and Spanish ... do you not speak English to them sometimes ? I speak French and my partner Spanish but we speak together in English . Is it the case for you too ?

  • @dorothyshelton

yes, that is also the case for us. I speak German to my kids and Oscar speak spanish to the kids and when Oscar and I speak between eachother we speak in English. Also most people around us speak in English so they have the opportunity to hear a lot of English to the point where they choose to speak in English rather than Spanish or German.
