After graduating from university, I worked at a local boutique investment bank for two and half years, specializing in equity capital markets in the real estate sector. My previous firm also did a little bit of M&A (mergers and acquisitions) for a variety of industries including manufacturing, cannabis, technology, etc. I transitioned into private equity in 2019. I was an associate at a real estate fund for two years, before taking my current role as a private equity VP. A disclaimer, these are my personal experiences in investment banking and private equity, this may not reflect the experiences for other people in this industry around the world. I work in Canada and do not have the bulge bracket experience on Wall Street in New York City.

Hey, really curious on my chances of getting into PE if you don't mind. Currently 30, ran a small business for 9 years, second year working as a corporate banking credit analyst, econ & finance major, doing cfa currently. But is 30 too late for the IB - PE route?

What is the lure to this line of work? The hours seem horrific. Life balance comes at the expense of sleep. I'm truly curious... why would someone endeavor to a career path with 60-100 hour work weeks? Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience! : )

First, Thanks for your bomb channel you seem like an honest person, just down to earth. I have no formal education in pe and was trained under a 30 year veteran in the pe arena for the past 3 years now. I mainly validate the financials for deals and bring deals to the table. I want to open a firm that focuses on management and financial consulting that consults for equity and M&A building a portfolio of quality niche deals in hospitality sectors. The only education I see myself taking up at this point is the USPEC, your advice for my choice is much appreciated.

What models did you use during your IB role vs PE role. (Aware that you are on the real estate side) Do you think having worked a few years in a boutique valuation firm as an analyst and the getting an MSc in finance from rotman would help me break into the buy side? Thanks a bunch

Hi, my question is, how much of your previous role focused on the research component of finance (CDD, for example) vs. the financial analysis/ modelling component? How did you work on mastering financial analysis and models?

What can one do to get started in those fields. I know it's not easy and they would want you to be certified in certain sofware right? My ultimate goal is private equity. What could I do to prepare my self for something like that.

Great video bro. Haha but i could help but notice you've bought every fragrance that these youtube channels hype, which one of those is your go-to that u feel is the best suited for everyday/work. Mine is Calvin Klein One out of my collection (which includes ysl l'homme, intense etc) 🙂

Congratulations on the promo. Your transparency about your work life is really helpful to hear and see since not everyone is willing to do that in your industry.
How would u say your WLB is (I.E., weekend work) Is it out the window when you’re on a live deal? I made the switch from big 4 M&A to a boutique IB in the US as an associate and not gonna lie, being on call 24/7 kinda sucks. My initial plan was doing something like you - IB-> PE - but I am not too sure I wanna sacrifice so much of my time anymore and always being on call. Thanks!
I WANT MORE VIDS. i like your style and i really enjoyed this
Are you happy?
Can a CPA become a IB and progress to PE?
Great stuff, did your summer internship also include the real estate side? Sounds super interesting, but I don't want to focus on one area immediately. Can you switch from real estate to different products?
please tell me how to get out of my parents mouldy basement. I want to do some entrepreneurial stuff. buying businesses, building real estate.
I think that your thought process is pretty natural since investment banking led you have a powerful set of skills and made you gain confidence. The more confidence you gain the more you feel the need of making decision, I hope is going to end up like this for me as well. Congrats!!!

No doubts , A good way of growing and saving your money is through investing . You don't need to have much before you can invest. "That little money you have now can make you millions if you invest it wisely". I wasnt financial free until my 40’s and I’m still in my 40’s, bought my second house already, earn on a monthly through passive income and got 4 out of 5 goals, just hope it encourages someone that it doesn’t matter if you don’t have any of them right now, you can start TODAY regardless your age INVEST and change your future! Investing is a grand choice I made.

@@Alexedmartin. Alright so generally, investing requires higher knowledge. For this reason, It's important to have a solid support structure (financial consultant) to guide you through especially in asset picking. I operate with (REGINA LOUISE COLLARO) an investment advisor who partners with a licensed wealth management firm. For the record, the experience has been the best for my finance. She is quite popular for her services so you might have heard of her. She made me financially stable investing through her help, now I earn on a monthly basis through her passive income strategy...So I’ll advise you do get a good Investment advisor for yourself.4

What do you think are the biggest downsides of working at boutique firms vs mm or bb?
@casualbusiness
Жыл бұрын
Can't say too much about BB firms personally since I haven't worked at one, but from what I can tell from the outside, BB firms definitely have a lot stronger exit opportunities. You typically deal with more bureaucracy at a BB firm. With boutiques, especially the smaller ones, there is less structure overall and you get a lot more involved at junior levels. Boutiques on average have less exit opportunities than a BB role.

Thanks for sharing! You keep it so real, putting aside all the shnazz and hype associated with IB/PE. Question: for students/recent grads without a business/finance background example: engineering, what are some things we could potentially look into that would provide us with more knowledge into this space and allow us to break into the sector. Two potential things I am thinking atm are exploring the cfa exams (at least level 1) and taking part in finance case comps. But would love to have your inputs :)

Congrats on the promo! Questions: How did you break into boutique IBin undergrad? How did you standout? Any advice on boutique IB internship recruiting? Could you also touch on the networking side, has it made a difference in landing any of your internships or job switches? Lastly, how did you maintain your professional network relationships? on the first question (also a PERE VP here): start somewhere you can get in easier (valuations, consulting, brokerage, transaction roles at smaller firms) and try to switch after 1-2 years - Analysts with actual experience that are not completely lost on deals and underwriting are rare and very sought after. I personally started within audit, started my CFA on the side and then got the job offer in PERE.

So I work IB-side at an in between bank (think Wells Fargo, BMO, SMBC, etc.) but not IB proper, I do securitization but I still make IB base pay with a 40% of base pay bonus (a bit less than the 60% M&A guys get). The way I broke in from a fairly severe non-target school was that I had a very rigorous stem and liberal arts background and perfect grades my sophomore year. I ended up getting a sophomore year internship at a ratings firm on their ABS team. After that, applying for a junior year internship in structured finance was much easier. Just shooting my application over I had about a 50% chance of a final round just because of my experience in structured finance since it's so niche. I ended up getting an SA role at a bank and then a return offer for full time. It's not that uncommon for people to lateral out of SF into Levfin, in fact I'd say it's a lot more common than it is from other capital markets gig or trying to do Corporate Banking -> M&A. A guy I know finished 2 years in ABS Securitization here, did a year in Levfin at BofA and he's now a first year associate there sans an MBA. Levfin exit opps from BofA are absolutely stellar, probably as good as GS unless you want to do classic equity HF. If you're a junior trying to break in this late in the game, I reccomend looking at niche areas like SF, project finance, or fund finance.

@@Banzai4ever agree with you. I started at a consulting firm and made the switch to IB less than a year in. OP, if you can get into anything deals related that’s your ticket into IB -FDD, M&A, Integration, etc. The second part is killing the interview. IB, especially at the boutiques, is more of a sales job with lots bus dev and admin stuff. If you can sell yourself to your interviewer, then they’ll feel confident putting you in front of a client or PE investor.
Nice video! Incoming IB analyst to a firm in NYC. Considering REPE as an exit option since headhunters are already reaching out. I appreciate the insight!

3 Sales Tips (REALLY good ones) 1. Always say: this may not be for you. 2. Ask them why they think the product is a fit - asking this they might start telling themselves why they want it 3. Ask the prospect why they booked the call and why now is the good time to get started
Just found your channel, gotta say, it's nice seeing just talking as opposed to trying to sell something. I am currently in the process of interning with Deloitte, however I do want to eventually break into Private Equity. What would you advise with the career path in that regard?

As a VP you must very be involved in the decision making of whether to take on a project or not. Can you provide (in high level) a list of different factors you consider when underwriting RE deals and how you go about adding these thoughts into quantitative data which is factored into the model?
