This forest is wild ! The track is wild ! So happy you managed to pass it safe. Sometimes it's better to go slower and not to hurt yourself

Hello from NZ, that track to YTYY is a pig of a track. I always take the old track, not being local you would not know about it. It is much easier ("now he tells me") . You follow the track up Saddle Creek. Been in the Tararuas for 50 years. Hope that you had an enjoyable time in the Tararuas. Cheers from NZ

Hello from NZ! That is a terrible track. I’ve done it both ways now - north and south. The year before, there was a lot of recent tree fall. I will have to check out that alternative. I found the Tararuas hard. I think that km per km they are the hardest part of Te Araroa. Those long tussock grasses really added a challenge as I couldn’t see the track for good sections. They are beautiful though. I live on the South Island. Most of my pre TA tramping has been in the Kahurangi National Park.

The 'alternative ' is on the old track just past the start of the new track going north. (the end of the old tramway track) I have cut a new track, goes around the bottom of the big slip. And up a short spur on the the other side of the slip and gains the old tramway again. Much easier and is well marked. You would have noticed the little reflector squares on the markers, I put them on to help with night tramping. The track goes past the old rusting log hauler. The 'new track ' was really cut in haste .

@@tararuaman Oh nice. How good of you! The old tramway track was really nice and then the diversion for the slip was rough! YTYY hut is gorgeous though. So you still tramp a fair amount in the Tararuas?

I'm 74 and still tramping. I've done 45 tramps so far this year, did 67 last year. Was a guide for 9 years..it's what I live for. Not a track that I don't know in the Tararuas and some that have been long forgotten. Parawai hut used to be on the other side of the river, spent a night in it a few days before they moved it to where it is now. (1986).

Hi, good video! I was wondering if there is any place to tent at Waitewaewae Hut area?

Good question. I looked around with that in mind. Right next to the hut behind the deck there may be a small place for a tent. You could end up at the start of the path to the loo. If not next to the hut hard to say. The forest is pretty dense and not flat. The deck may work if you have a stand alone tent. With the road closed (I don’t know if it is opened again) I think there are not so many trampers going there other than those walking TA. The hut is spacious. I think there was a tent spot where I had lunch a few kms south of the hut.
