Day 35: Where the Wild Ones Roam / CDT Thru-hike 2024

I intend to hike the Continental Divide Trail (CDT) in 2024 and will vlog my experience. Follow me under "Old Man and the CDT."
I am Mike Current, 61-years-old, and retired military. I served for over 30 years in the US Army.
After retirement, I opened two small businesses. But after a few years, I sold both businesses because they were taking time away from pursuing personal goals, like hiking and sailing.
I hiked the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) in 2020 and Appalachian Trail (AT) in 2022. I vlogged (video journaled) my experiences under "Old Man and the PCT" and "Old Man and the AT", respectively.
I sailed around the Chesapeake Bay in my Tayana 37 sailboat over the summer of 2023 and vlogged the experience under the KZread channel "Old Man and the Sea."
I do not monetize my videos in any manner. However, if you would like to contribute to helping veterans thru-hike as a form of therapy for PTSD, please consider donating to Warrior Expeditions at warriorexpeditions.org/

Great views of NM. The snow has retreated and spring is upon northern NM. Look forward to your progress on the trail. Not sure how you manage it but your posts aren't just pictures. They tell us a story. ❤

It is funny to me, How watching the hiking videos makes me appreciate being able to go out on my porch and look at the San Juans, The desert valley below them. I guess living here we all get caught up in daily life we forget to stop and take a minute to just look out and think about how beautiful it is. Until last year I didn't even know about video showing the AT, CDT and PCT, A lot of people make videos about the trail but each style is it's own. You do a hell of a job and I like that you present it really relaxed and positive. Thanks for showing it like that.

Energizer, thanks for mentioning Otter. It’s an important story for other hikers to learn from. Otter was a legendary hiker and was also clearly a very considerate human being. I’ve linked a very good video, I recently watched, describing and discussing Otters deadly incident. Otter journaled his experience so others could understand what happened, how he survived for so long, and hopefully not repeat his mistake (which he admits). Not only was Otter an incredibly accomplished through hiker with MULTIPLE triple crowns, but he displayed incredibly thoughtfulness, in what must have been some miserable, final days. After months surviving in the cold snow, long after the official search for him had ended and near death he took the time and effort to scratch a warning on the door, so some innocent unsuspecting hiker didn’t have to see a dead body. So sorry this happened to you Otter. You’re a legend and a good man. Hike On! ❤️ kzread.info/dash/bejne/lZWeqK-El7K7isY.htmlsi=84emCLvtTaFs6FXI

Thank you so much for sharing. Otter's thoughtfulness for others is underscored by his scratching the message in the door.

When you are growing up, you are taught to be cautious of others. But as soon as you see a sign that says there may be candy in a van...😂

Thank you for another great video and talking about making sure to bring gps/rescue device. Also I just learned a valuable lesson in that I haven’t updated the software on my Garmin in-reach mini in years and come to find out if you don’t do this it usually won’t work if you have to hit the SOS button. My hiking buddy just had this happen. He was also not able to send out texts because of this as well so everyone that has one, please update the software often and especially right before you go out on your next hike. Thanks again Energizer!

Hi Mike, what a day. Loved seeing all the elk. They are majestic. All the critters were great. Glad your last day in NM was so nice with lots of parting gifts. Great idea to remind people about the need for personal satellite locators. Sad about Otto. Take care. Stay safe. See you tomorrow.

I remember seeing video or videos on Otter. I was thinking it was winter and there was lots of snow and that played a part. Could be I'm totally off base. Not sure. Anyway, thanks for the tour of a significant chunk of NM!

Oh, wow, Energizer. What a magical day. I’m so envious. You are about to enter my old stomping grounds in south central Colorado. I used to own 80 acres out in the San Luis valley between Fort Garland and La Veta. Been a few years since I’ve been out there and may never get a chance to get back again but still have some great memories of my time out there. You are still putting up,some impressive mileage. That may fall off a bit when you get into the real high country. Also, start to watch out for the afternoon thunderstorms that you are likely to encounter above tree line. I’ve been caught in hail and lightning storms out there. Not fun. Hike on. Stay safe.

Now you're into the real trail the rest is just a warm up like S Cal on the PCT . The snow pack is low I have been through that area several times always in snow. That is a strange story about the hiker that died in that outhouse I went down and helped look for him even in snow he should have been able to hike out of there and it was before phones and beacons and it looks like they moved the trail again that campground used to be off trail and is why it took so long to find him.
