Day 3: Bowhunting the Backend of a Cold Front

Day 3: Bowhunting the Backend of a Cold Front
Back in the same stand with a little bit of a déjà vu hunt. This time I'm hunting the backend of an October cold front, but the deer movement is still great and it results in another big buck sighting.

You've got discipline. That's exactly what it takes to have a chance at harvesting giants, but you already know that. Ain't many like you around. Great job, and I like your videos

That's what it takes for sure. One thing though that I don't think people think about enough is that having encounters like this where you don't kill is not a loss. I think people too often see it as a missed opportunity or whatever. When you know you did everything it took to kill him, and could have, I think it's just as great of an experience as pulling the trigger. Thanks for watching!

Awesome content as always Jared. Admire how much you love to just be out in the woods and watch deer as you are as when you get to climb down out of the stand and go wrap your hands around the horns of another great buck. It's the things the great Fred Bear talked about and wants all hunters to become and appreciate about the God given right that we have, ability, desire and gift of hunting in the great USA.

I’ve been passing some pretty big deer the past 4 years on a big parcel I’ve got. A few in the 160s and passed a big mid upper 170s 8 with kickers and drops last year along with a giant typical the year before. Typical was every bit of 185 maybe even reaching 90. He injured his leg that next year and was completely jacked up last year could have killed him 20 times and couldn’t do it. I should have 1 200 that I know of and a couple in the 180s this year. As luck would have it they called me a month ago to tell me they sold the property after I’ve finally got the heard of my dreams. Never fails. I’ve had the opportunity to chase 2 over 200 in my life both on a different farm. One was last year and I believe he got shot in October. Seen him all year and he disappeared and never showed again. He was a wild non typical in the 220s and possibly more with all the junk u can’t see as well. The other was about 215-220 and we never could get him down at his peak. Got him on the first year of decline and he went 195 and change. Lost about 20 inches of kickers from the prior year.

@@jaredmills you catch a little hell for not shooting some of these deer but most don’t realize after you’ve shot some good deer it’s nearly as fulfilling just to get them in range and pass them. Releasing the arrow is only the last 5 percent IMO I personally like building a story with them and then shooting them. I’ve shot some smaller older deer still in the 150s when I’ve had bigger on the property just merely bc of the wild scenarios and past we created

Take it to a bow shop thats likely due to string stretch. I've had that happen during season and I just went back to the old style peep with the rubber tube. It lines up perfect every time.and requires less tuning for mid season. If you have the time tho take it in and have a bow tech work with ya.

Hold your string and twist your D loop to line up with your peep

Take it to your bow shop. They'll throw it on the press and give your string a twist or two.

So it's not super low off the ground (probably about 20 feet), it's just low compared to that dam where the deer come around the corner. I could go a little higher before the trunk starts to get too small but I don't really need to with all the cover those pine trees have.

That’s a pretty good one. But I know how many big deer you’ve killed. Guys around here would kill for one like that. Again we don’t live in Iowa. Good luck.

You haven’t shown once a deer you’re after. That was a 180” deer and def looks older than just 4. So what are you after if you passed him, a 230”? I’m not buying it. At this point it seems like you just want video for views. You shot a lower scoring deer last year.

  • @jaredmills

Hey Andrew. Few things. 1) 99% sure the deer is not older than 4, maybe I'll show what he looked like last year in the next video and you can tell me what you think then. 2) He is not 180 either. 3) I showed trail cam videos of two deer in this video that are 5.5+ that I'd probably shoot, and are lower scoring than the 4 year old. I don't have any giants on the radar yet, just a bunch of solid mature bucks that I would shoot if it was a good encounter. And finally, if I were doing this for views, I would do things way differently, starting with a bunch of clickbait-like titles/thumbnails/content like most people do. I'm sure I could have gotten a lot more views on this one with just a different title and thumbnail but I'm not a fan of that. I've seen your name on here before so hopefully you'd understand this by now but I just enjoy hunting and filming, and if you think I'm going to change the way I hunt or choose which deer I'm going to shoot based on the opinions of bunch of people I don't know, you're crazy. And, as I stated at the end of this video, that encounter was as cool as a kill. I did everything that it took to pull it off, which is a lot, other than pull the trigger.
