I am 83 and a retired Greyhound driver from way back, I hired on in Los angeles in 1967, drove the old silversides no power steering, my favourite was the scenic cruiser PD4501 but I love the MC6 that did not pass for operation on the intersate as it was too wide, you guys have it made today with coaches like the Prevost, wish we had equipment like that when I was driving, when we got to our destination we new we just did a hard days work, good luck in your career and drive safely, I did , and won awards for all my years driving and that was almost 30 years.

I'm an old Greyhound head from days back when I rode as a child in southern Louisiana and southeast Texas. Rode to LA twice, 1972 and 1977. Would you share some of the runs you held down at Greyhound. Thanks.

@@thegodblogger3812 I drove out of San Diego for my first few years then out of Los Angeles from the early 70s till 1989 where I drove from Flagstaff to San Bernardino, I drove most of my time out of LA to Las Vegas through the late 70s and 80s I also drove a run out of Indio to Tucson Az leaving at 2:00am and arriving around 8:00am, It was a great career I even had my own tour business and booked tours to Las Vegas which I drove. but alas it all went to hell in a handbasket 5 years before i was eligible to retire as we went on strike for the entire 5 years in 1990, I was working Flagstaff at the time, when the strike was over I took my retirement so never went back, thank goodness for my Greyhound pension.

@thegoodblogger3812. I am a retired Greyhound driver from Australia. I worked for Greyhound for nine and a half years, and got made redundant due to Covid 19 when I was 76 years old. You like Greyhound stories, I have a million of them. One that I remember well was a night run I was doing from Brisbane, destination Sydney. An old guy ( much older than me ) sat behind me . We didn’t have cages around the driver in Australia. He started chatting to me, and we got talking about all sorts of things. He said he was going to Melbourne. He said he worked for Massey Furgeson tractors. I was interested in that because when I was 12 I drove a MF tractor from Ballandean to Guyra about 5 miles to pump water from the creek into a truck. I loved that drive. The old guy knew everything about tractors and could still quote the part numbers of everything on the tractor. A few hours into the trip I got a call from operations asking me if I had a certain gentleman on my coach. I asked him if that was his name and he said no. Also that name was not on my manifest. He had dinner with me at our meal break and I really enjoyed his company and he was loving the trip. Being night time everybody else was asleep on the coach, so me and my old mate just kept chatting, which passed the time and was keeping me alert. I ended my shift at round midnight at Nambucca Heads, handing over to the relief driver. I said goodbye to my new found mate and went to bed in the motel across the road. Next morning when I called operations to see if my coach from Sydney to Brisbane was on time they told me the following. The old guy from the night before was indeed the guy they asked me about the night before. Operations told me he had escaped from a secure dementia old age home. He had been missing for some time and his family were frantic. There was an all points police bulletin put out on him and they were searching trains, boats planes and interstate coaches. The police were waiting for the coach when it arrived in Sydney, where he was taken into custody. I had no idea he had dementia, he seemed just like a perfectly normal old man. He had such an enjoyable time on that coach that I was happy he made it to Sydney but sad he never got to Melbourne. Like I said in the beginning Greyhound coach drivers have a million stories, I could go on for hours.

Ronald Massey what do you think about the Prevost, and the MCI coaches they use today. Most retired Greyhound drivers say the GM 4104's was a real bus. Why do they say that? Do you ever drive them? PD 4501 had engine problems did you experience that?

I trained with Greyhound back in 1981. Classes were held at a motel on the Baltimore Washington Parkway in Maryland. (I was using sick time from my job as a Baltimore public School Security Officer). We were training on standard shift buses. During classroom training and over-the-road training, we were advised that after graduation, we would not be assigned steady work as a driver. Instead we were told that we would be "plugging the board" (On call) for at least two years. However I learned that drivers would be on call for at least five years. So after careful consideration, I decided to not report for further training and return to the security job, since I had a new car note and rent to pay. I did stay at Greyhound long enough to get my bus operator's license which worked out beautifully because weeks later, I was hired as a New York City (MABSTOA) Transit Bus Operator. Retired in 2011 after 30 years.

I got an offer. I showed up and I came correct, dressed in business attire, and it was another dude from NY, and he looked like he was about to move a couch. They’re trying to fill spots for a Jan. 7, 2024 class. It’s up in the air where it’s going to be, either Dallas, TX or ATL, and they’re trying to condense it a 5 week training course into 9 days. 😮 I was looking like, how is that going to work? But, I believe they’re desperate, imo, to fill spots to have a strong extra board driver pool here in ATL. So, I wanted to ask, you get a stipend, but what about base pay? Bills don’t stop. Whether you’re training for 9 days or 2 weeks. The company is making major changes for 2024. Easy interview.

I was hired in as a ticket agent, then I was moved to baggage handling, then I was promoted to greeter. Being a driver is a full circle moment for me. Best job I ever had! I had a ball! We used to have fun out of Detroit terminal. It’s like coming home for me. But their trying to save money, by downsizing. I’m watching your videos and greyhound kicking out mad paper to train folks.
