Day 2 - Leg Drive - Ivan Lawler Kayak Technique Series

Day 2 and we move to the top end of the leg to try and maximise the transition of force, generated from the feet, through to the upper body. A brief description of the problems we commonly see and hopefully some ideas as to how we may address them.

    I've not been sitting in a boat since childhood (for 20 years or so). Now you described my errors and it's like you gave me freedom) With such clear and crystal understanding of technique I begin to think about Tokyo.

    Fantastic video series. Thanks so much. I found the long one at Richmond first and watched it all going “ohhh” the whole time! I’m brand new to paddling and really want to embed great technique in my muscle memory right from the start. The drills here are great and I really appreciate not needing an erg to be able to train at home. Thanks again.

    Thank you sir , that for the methods you have adopted. Really it was realistic and taught from the bottom of your heart. I am 54 and still I am interested to paddle kayak. I could have used this valuable technique at the time I baggage Gold and Silver medals in championship events. Apart from that won 80km kayaking marathon and stood 3rd place. Frankly speaking I didn't know all this ways and idea's to paddle ,only a few which I learnt 32 years before. Now also I am very much interested learn , help and complete .

    I really like the glute drill tapping the foot in the semi circle. So simple but i really feel it. The last exercise,standing from kneeling with arm assist, is quite challenging in terms of stabilization. I will have to work up to it to do it well. Thank you again for the outstanding video!

    The stand up exercise is tough. Try using the back leg to help initially but work toward reducing its influence. That exercise is the me of the key ones to master I think.

    Interesting stuff. I mainly paddle WWR K1 so my knees are a bit lower due to the deck and outfitting, but as far as I can tell what I do when flat and level is pretty good, albeit leg drive slightly limited due to knees starting lower. What I have just realised from this though is why edge steering loses quite so much speed. I always assumed it was due to messing up the flow over the hull, but to crank the boat over and make it turn, I have to 'move the dots together' on the high side for several strokes. In fact sitting in my boat earlier I reckon the high side knee comes up tight under the deck/thigh brace and the low side knee goes down flat onto the bottom of the boat for the entire manouevre, meaning there is no leg drive on either side and very limited power. This is relevant for all edge steered kayaks (WWR, sea kayaks without rudders). It is even more complex for WWR C1, there is not the same leg drive, but almost continuous edging means the dots are close together almost all the time - I will need to think a lot more about how my body is working in C1!

    Hello Ivan. I watched this video and some of your others a couple years ago. I paddle a semi-elite surf ski (NELO 550 and EPIC V 12) and have been working two years on trying to make my leg drive the bulk of the power in my stroke. This is somewhat instinctive to me since I have an elite rowing background. But I notice that very few elite surf ski paddlers do what I do. (Both of their knees seem to be bent all the time.) I lock my drive leg down tight at the end of the leg drive (my knee is locked). I find it seems to improve my stability with a solid bit of weight low down in the ski. Am I missing something? Also, in accordance with some instruction by Oscar Chalupsky, I am paddling with by upper arm elbow much lower than my shoulder so that I focus on torso twist and resist the tendency to push out with my upper arm. My upper hand is about chin or mouth level and never as high as eye level. After my release I do have to extend that upper arm a little for the catch. Again, am I missing something here?

    Great stuff again. Thank You. I've spent a lot of time on a Pilates Reformer over the last 18 months working on a uni-lateral weakness/old muscle memory pattern on one side causing the dip. The seated and standing land based drill looks great & so simple. Does the white tape on the front of the T-Shirt have the same visual effect? I'm wondering if working on the erg in front of a mirror would be beneficial .... anything to make the erg a bit more interesting ;-)

    A horizontal line across the chest is probably enough to do the job. Even a t shirt with writing across will give you a guide. Leaning onto the paddle causes the tilt, standing off it creates true lift and real force onto the blade.

    With the last exercise I finally think I’m understanding why we want to have the feeling of dropping the top shoulder. It’s so that there’s a clear vector of power transfer on the pulling side, right? So that we can stick the blade in and lever past it?

    Ivan, thanks for the video! Have you got any tips for increasing the movement of the pelvis on the seat? I know the only true fixed point is the feet on footplate, but the seat often feels like a fixed point too due to a) friction and b) the sharp rise at the back of the seat. I have heard of people putting a plastic bag over the seat to make it more slippy. Have you any suggestions of your own?

  • @ultimatekayaks6499

    @ultimatekayaks6499

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hi Oliver, there are lots of options, plastic bag is one, some people use teflon, a lower back seat, a rotating seat. All those may help but if the back of the seat is really feeling like a fixed point then you may just need to increase the distance between seat and footrest. The other thing is you may need to think of rotation on the seat as opposed to just pushing backwards.

    Hi Ivan, perhaps a vid on that topic - pelvis rotation instead of pushing back? You’ve covered it in other vids, but I think the rotation is hard to achieve (surf ski so can’t have rotating seat). Thanks
